Disorders Affecting the Immune System

POISON IVY- It is a rash caused by urushiol, which is a sticky oil that is found in different plants such as poison ivy, oak, and sumac. The rash is spread by touching or brushing against any part of these plants, including the leaves, stems, flowers, berries, and roots. Even touching anything that has come in contact with these plants such as clothing, sports gear, or any tools can cause this rash. When urushiol from the poison ivy plant touches the skin, it instigates an immune response called dermatitis. The responses occur when the urushiol makes it way down through the skin, where it is metabolized, or broken down. The immune has T-cells that recognize the urushiol as a foreign substance, or antigen. It sends out inflammatory signals called cytokines, which bring in white blood cells. Under orders from the cytokines, these white blood cells turn into macrophages. The macrophages eat foreign substances, but in doing so they also damage normal tissue, resulting in the skin inflammation that occurs with poison ivy. The hypersensitivity occur when the allergic reaction happens and this could be immediate or hours after exposure which is the delayed hypersensitivity.
TYPE A BLOOD with TYPE B BLOOD- Your immune system knows what its immune to and it can usually tell its own blood cells from blood cells from those that don’t belong in the body. If you were given a transfusion of type B blood and you are type A when that blood enters your body, your immune system may already have antibodies against them. These antibodies will work to destroy the blood cells that your immune system does not recognize. Blood that you receive in a transfusion must be compatible with your own blood. This mean that your body does not have antibodies against the blood you receive to keep any hypersensitivity reactions from occurring.
