...Why am I Here? The decision to further my education was made long before I completed high school; however, at the time I did not have the resources at my disposal to achieve my life goals. In conversations I had with individuals that I surrounded myself with I realized that furthering my education should be a top priority. The decision was made to join the armed services which had a huge impact on my life. Not only did the rigors of military life provide me with the discipline that I would need to succeed, but it would eventually avail a litany of resources thereby enabling me to pursue select long and short-term goals such as purchasing property and building a home. Over the years I’ve been motivated by an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and by living vicariously through family, friends, and their college experience(s). Along comes the Great Recession; a period in our history that continues to impact every hard working American and the global society. The unfortunate events leading up to the recession and the subsequent implosion of the economy, if you will, forced me to seriously ponder my future. Why now? “Why not?” would be the easiest way to answer that question, but the more obvious answer is the fulfillment of my goals. You see I never gave up on them I just chose another route. I envision a better quality of life following successful completion of my degree program that will not only affect me but family and friends. I presume that more opportunities will present themselves...

...September 2015 Why am I here? In personal growth 120 I want to learn about all the resources that are available to me and how to use them. So far I have the financial aid available to me. I also applied for the EOPS and CARE program. I’ve learned that there are many clubs that I can join. Emotionally I would like to be as excited and motivated as I am now. I hope it doesn’t fade away. I am doing this for myself but I would like to make those who love me proud. I want to keep going and excited in every class regardless of all the obstacles I know might come ahead. There is no easy road and if it seems easy that means you are on the wrong one. Academically I would like myself to be in a “B” average since I am looking to transfer to SDSU. Push myself to earn above average grades to prove to myself I can do this. I know that if I give myself enough time to study I can do this. Physically I would like to be able to control my stress levels because it often leads to migraines. I might work on weight control as well since all be doing lots of exercise by climbing so many stairs and walking long distances. Spiritually I would like to be more involved in my church since I will have much to give thanks for. I am Catholic. Giving thanks to God is one way to help me count my blessings. My two beautiful kids are my biggest blessing. My plan to get to these goals are to have lots of patience and be able to divide my time wisely because besides being a student I am also a mother, homemaker...

...Who Am I? My name is xxxxxxxxx and I am a woman originally born in the city of xxxxxx, xxxxx. I came to the United States at age five and I recently became xxx years old on my birthday, this past xxxx x, xxxx. As a woman of Hispanic origin, I am very rich in Latin and Central American Indian culture. I grew up with my mom and aunts speaking a derivative of Pig Latin. I have a Spanish style of cooking and mostly all my plates are xxxxxx dishes. I may have grown up in the states all my life, but I’m almost 100% rooted in Spanish customs. As a person, I identify myself as a child of God. Spiritually, I am always seeking knowledge and wisdom since I believe it comes from God. My faith is deeply rooted in my confession, that I am a spirit who will one day return to my maker. Holding such a belief has its advantages. For example, I generally do not abide by society’s norm of what I should be, or my role in life. I also believe that if I’m still here, there’s work to be done. I love to explore Biblical concepts and beliefs. As a mother I am an attentive soul. I’m always looking out for my children and their personal interest. I like to give them their space, but yet hold them accountable. I tend to be conservative with my children and do not try to push them beyond their limits. To me, being who we are and doing what we do, just as we choose whether to build a relationship with God, is a very personal matter. While most people do not like my parenting style, I think it’s worked...

...“Even if I hadn’t got the acid in my eyes-on my face (by accident: Rose-Ann had meant to ht Harry to be hurt by the acid- hit me, but Harry, who was, as I said, unexpected). Even if I hadn’t got the acid in my eyes, I’d never have seen my father again” (1). In the novel Sleena was mentioning how she got blind by accident. She sees what her mother had done to be a accident. Her tone towards this isn’t too upset as to be expected . I thought her tone would be more upset that she is upset because it is pretty hard when you’re mother had caused it. I think this shows how strong she is since she is past that matter. “I was excited, so happy. For the first time in my life of eighteen years, someone had talked, laughed, helped me. I was trembling for happiness” (26). In the novel Sleena was at the park where she met a man named Gordon. They began to chat and got comfortable in each other’s company. He left to get themselves both some food and Sleena was in thinking about how happy she is. Sleena’s voice is expressing how happy she is that she got to meet Gordon. I think it was very interesting how happy she got just because he began speaking to her. “No one, not even Mr.Faber had ever, I’m sured cared whether I drank at all, let alone what I cared to drink. It was fabulous. I would stuck my nail into my hand it hurt I was not dreaming”...

...Tata decided that the best way to differentiate was to connect with the consumer at an emotional level, since competitors were focussing on the functional properties of salt. So, while Tata salt had thus far been positioned on the rational aspects of 'purity', its new positioning would carry this proposition forward but within the larger context of the consumer's life, encompassing both rational and emotional manifestations of 'purity'. In addition, being the market leader, Tata wanted to grow the market by increasing the user-base. Tata salt realised that there was nothing like strong 'leadership claim' to meet this end. It felt that elevating the brand to the status of a national icon, it could not only expand the user-base but also break free from the clutter. Tata salt's greatest strength as a brand was derived from its association with trust. Its parent, the Tata group, had built its equity on the very concept of leadership with trust. Thus the advertising strategy was aimed at rendering the twin messages of (1)purity (rational emotional expressions) of the brand and (2) its leadership position Tata decided that the best way to differentiate was to connect with the consumer at an emotional level, since competitors were focussing on the functional properties of salt. ...Here I am on Earth trying to determine if the people here are religious or not?? Here I am on Earth trying to determine if the people here are religious or not. Three things I am looking for are prayer to a higher entity, sacrifice, and public acknowledgment of their god in ways other than prayer. The clues I am now assessing include people attending their houses of worship, people wearing crosses around their necks as jewelry, and people with their heads bowed in prayer. These people with their heads bowed in prayer have so many variations in their actions. Some people are at their dinner table praying, some people kneel on the ground in a line with other people five times per day to pray, and some bow their heads and put their hands together, and use a string of beads to pray with. The earthlings seem to practice sacrifice openly and variably. They are not, perhaps, killing a goat, burning it, and attempting to give it to the deity, but instead, people are sacrificing personal actions. The man who used to steal does not steal anymore, hoping this sacrifice will please his god. So it is with the woman who used foul words heavily in speech. She now, however, is trying to give up (sacrifice) her obscene language because she feels like she cannot reap the benefits of being a servant of her god if her language is not pure. She does not want to grieve her higher being, so she sacrificed her abhorrent language. Sacrifice occurs in Buddhism when practicing Sutra and one...

...the silly video and take it for nothing more than meaningless entertainment, but in fact it has some deep meaning. Green Eggs and Jam by Jason Gastrow is a parody and perspective shift of the classic book Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss, and can be viewed here on youtube. In Green Eggs and Jam, Gastrow takes the original concept of Green Eggs and Ham and follows the idea that in actuality Sam is fairly pushy for trying to force his opinion onto others. This aspect is not touched on in the original book, and it brings up the important point that if someone’s opinion is contrary to another person’s it should be...

...Ethics, Who am I? How did I get here? Diana Maionchi GCU Ethics NURS 437V Professor Jean Gordon September 1, 2012 Ethics, Who am I? How did I get here? We are born with familial genes but whom we are is greatly influenced by our physical surroundings, our parents or family, and our cultural and spiritual beliefs. I have been fortunate enough to be born in the United States, which has provided me with many riches in life to include education. This education provides me with the resources necessary to make sound clinical decisions about my nursing practice. My morality is based on guidelines that have become a natural language and behavior that has instilled how things ought to be and society has accepted. (Purtilo & Doherty, 11/2010, p. 6) I am a practicing Catholic, which deeply influences how I respect life and how I contribute to the community in which I live. Christian values and morals are guiding principles, which help us lead our community and make it strong. As stated in the Bible, “In order for God’s word to take root, believers must do more than merely listen to it. They must act upon it.” (King James, 1:17-18) Simple guiding principles such as these lead us in life, community and our professions. When we provide care we are not only using our clinical skills we are using moral ethical thought to assist us in what is right or wrong for our patients. Has the physician really listened to what the patient is stating their desires are? We are with our patients...

...The Dave Matthews Band When I think of The Dave Matthews Band, I also think of their jazzy pop rock music that has helped them become a musical sensation. The band consists of jazz and classical musicians and of course, Dave Matthews. Their music and songs are very unique and have not been heard before the band came about. They have touched millions of people’s hearts, especially mine. The fact that they sing about real situations and real issues that are going on the world today is what makes them my favorite band. Whether I am happy, sad, or mad, The Dave Matthews Band’s album “Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King” always lifts my spirits and puts me in a better mood; their songs are inspirational. One of the songs that touch me the most is called “Funny the Way It Is”. This song is about the good and bad things going on in the world. The point being made is that even though many wonderful things are happening, bad things are occurring at the exact same time. “Funny the way it is, if you think about it/ One kid walks 10 miles to school, another's dropping out/ Funny the way it is, not right or wrong/ On a soldier's last breath, his baby's being born/ Funny the way it is, not right or wrong/ Somebody's broken heart become your favorite song/ Funny the way it is, if you think about it/ One kid walks 10 miles to school, another's dropping out” Not only does it discuss the fine times and poor times in life, but also how people take the privileges they have for granted. While kids...

He loves being a kid and playing baseball for school, but he doesn’t realize that everyone has to grow up at one point. The people in this play and in real life do not truly understand how much they take their life for granted and do not understand that. Emily says in act three in the graveyard “Do human beings ever realize life while they live it?—every, every minute?” (Wilder Act 3) Thornton Wilder’s interpretation of the American Dream is that people need to be accepted, loved, appreciated, and valued by other people before they can achieve the American dream. This is universal because even though it is called the American dream people from different countries...

...relates to the play because comparing the themes with the characters expresses the true intentions of Shakespeare. The themes that appear in both the essay King Lear’s Folly and the actual play is power of who holds it, nature and the values of what it represents, and parallels created with how the characters are contrasted. The first theme in the novel is power who has it, how one defines it, and how it plays into King Lear. As in the opening act Lear creates a love test to justify giving Cordelia a large share of his kingdom as she is his favorite. Instead of her answer resulting in flattery and gushing confessions of love like her elder sister’s, Cordelia's reply is tempered, honest, and reasonable- “ Unhappy that I am, I cannot heave My heart into my mouth: I love your majesty According to my bond; nor more nor less”. With this he banishes her and puts his two eldest in charge and with the power Goneril and Regan begin to treat their father poorly, with this look at power should also come an investigation of age and gender into the play. Since Edmund seduces both of the eldest sisters then Lear is banished into a storm, this (as King Lear’s Folly states) threatened the stability of the social structure. There is the treatment of the elderly and placement of women in Shakespeare’s time compared to society today. Considering that Edmund, Regan, and Goneril treated their fathers with such hostility as Edmund’s father was ashamed of him as a bastard and Cordelia was Lear’s...

...I am legend “I am Legend” is a sci-fi movie based on a brilliant military scientist, Robert Neville, whom becomes the last man on earth. He becomes the last man on earth because of a man-made untreatable virus which turns people into flesh eating zombies. He is immune to the virus and the only one who can save humanity. He spends several years trying to control the virus and also broadcasting radio signals for any other survivors. The Zombies creep around in the shadows, observing the scientist’s every move until he makes a fatal mistake. I liked this movie because the effectiveness and dialogue of it were accurate and I didn’t get lost watching all the scenes. The special effects and background coincided with what was going on throughout the movie and also appeared to be realistic. The performance of the main character, Will Smith, was phenomenal and I also felt as if I was in his shoes. Several aspects during certain scenes made the movie stand out from the thousands of movies I’ve watched. When Neville was driving around New York City with his dog Sam in a 2009 ford mustang GT500, the roar of the engine and the watchful eye of his dog following the deers symbolized modern hunting. After they got out on foot and began chasing the wild animals into the growing forest and the lions appeared out of the fields to take Neville’s priced deer gave me the idea that earth was reverting back into prehistoric times. Finally, when he sacrificed his life after he realized...
