...Lean In: Work, Women, and the Will to Lead Reading Response Paper Marie Dvorakova ENG 201-09 Winter 2015 Women and their unequal positions in a work place, is a commonly discussed topic and the theme in Sheryl Sandberg’s book called “Lean In: Women, Work, and their Will to Lead”. Sandberg is a successful business woman, chief operating officer of Facebook, and a writer. She dedicated and targeted the above mention book to all women, who wish to have equal opportunities as men. Her book is divided into eleven selections, where the author and other successful women share their stories, and even jokes from places they worked at. Sheryl Sandberg provides her female readers with tips how to have a voice in a company, being an irreplaceable employee, how to find a balance between a career and family, and especially being appreciated and feeling important. However, the main point of the book is about women accomplishing their dreams, and being an equal competition for men at a work place. She also talks about women not wanting a career and preferring a calm life of a homemaker, which is one of the reasons why we do not have very many women leaders in our society. As a business major student I asked myself many times the same questions: “Can I succeed in this field? Am I a business type of person? Can I have a career and family at the same time?” When I discussed this topic with my guy friends, they never wondered, if having a busy and time demanding...

...Background The differences between men and women is a universal truth and it can observe physically and emotionally. In our country, an emotional difference between two genders has rooted from their culture and upbringing. Previously, there was a belief that women are born to look after their household, family and children while male goes out to work, earn money, financially supports and leads family. This type of work division between male and female has led them experience, think and develop different perception. Therefore, the different perception of male and female in the same workplace can be seen. Eventually, this perception leads them to communicate differently in any kind of business environment. It does not mean that male are better...

...pursue this degree at this point in your life, a description of your specific interest in the Olin Business School, and any other information that would help inform the Admissions Committee of your qualifications for our program. (500-1000 words) After completing my B.Tech in Plastics from one of the top ten institutes in India, I occupied dual roles of marketing executive and merchandiser for almost three years in esteemed textile firms, where I handled a broad customer and vendor base. I have spent considerable time to understand the textile market and now I am able to identify key areas for business growth and process improvements. I spotted the market for scarves and enabled my company’s foray into the product. I helped my earlier textile company which only sold fabrics to venture into garment manufacturing. I also enabled the setting up of processes and systems that improved our sales processes. Experiences such as these have honed my operational, marketing, leadership, and interpersonal skills. However, as my opportunities are limited, so are my capabilities! At this stage of my career, I feel the need to practice more structured marketing techniques such as branding and measurement of customer behavior and develop the ability to conceive well analyzed marketing strategies to complement my technological and sales background that is presently restricted to business to business deal making. A realization that...

...Two years ago, I participated in the first “Women of Color Leadership and Empowerment” (WCLE) retreat. It was a full day of leadership development catering towards women of color in inner-city Boston. At the retreat, we focused on networking, finding mentors and setting S.M.A.R.T goals for our careers. It was the first time I had been exposed to engaging with other like-minded women of color who were distinguished, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders in their communities. Although many spaces like these exist, there are not many dedicated to women of color and when they do exist, not many resources exist to connect people to this space. As a young venture, there were not many systems in place to assess membership within the network. There was...

...Women As News Anchors Women in all careers are striving to gain equality in the work force today, and female television news anchors are definitely part of the fight. The road to television news anchoring is a rocky one, where only a few women survive and many fail. Where progress was once thought to have been made, there aren't many females getting ahead in the world of television news. Today, there is a very slow, if any, gain in the numbers of women who succeed. There are many questions surrounding the subject of women in television news, and I will attempt to answer relevant ones in this paper. How have the women that actually make it to the top and succeed as anchorwomen, done it? What does it take to make it? Why do those few endure it/enjoy it? Why has it been and still is difficult for women? What are the expectations of women in the field, as opposed to the expectations of men? I am interested in this topic because I once aspired to become a television broadcaster. I still have inspiration in me, but not quite as much due to the negative and discouraging aspects I have heard about in classes and in the media. I am not sure that I could be happy in a career such as this, and I know there are great difficulties in "making it" in this profession. I have read about the incredible ambition of successful females in television news, and it seems like it takes a special kind of passion to want to keep up in the business. I kept my questions in mind when...

...Running a business is no easy task for the ordinary man. However, for Mary Love and her dependent crew of women, a story of hardship is turned into the tale of the successful Maramor Teahouse of Columbus, Ohio. How It Began “I was just a young girl when I found my love of cooking, baking, and home economics,” Mary said. “A lot of people viewed working in a kitchen as the servant’s work, but for me, it was an art.” Her love was ignited by a high school cooking club where she and her friends prepared meals and learned to cook for each other (Sisters in Restaurant Success: A History of The Maramor, Mary Love's Tea Room). Soon after graduating high school, Love attended college at Kansas State. During her time as a student, she was asked to...

...partners started or inherited a business, and is eager to take financial, administrative, and social risks and responsibilities, and participate in the day-to-day management activities (UNDP, 2004). Women in Asian countries like India, Myanmar and Bangladesh have played and also are playing a good role in politics. So, Bangladeshi women are enjoying freedom to join politics as well as business. But compared with the Unites States and the European countries, the number is still poor. In fact, women entrepreneurship development is a challenging phenomenon in Bangladesh as women are lagged behind (economically and socially) compared to men. Generally, women are more victimized as because of their illiteracy, unawareness, unorganized, powerless or less political representation, deprivation, rigid social customs, religious constrains and injustice by their counter partners particularly in rural area. Women constitute about a half of the total population in Bangladesh. So for proper representation of women in the arena of entrepreneurship development, "women should constitute 50 per cent of the country's total entrepreneurs." But the ground reality is totally different. "The ratio is not even 10 per cent. The actual ratio is much lower than that. We do not know the exact number of women entrepreneurs in the country,” There is no real information on how many women entrepreneurs exist in the country. 1 Background In Bangladesh women entrepreneurs are coming up. If the...

...I was able to have the opportunity of interviewing Audrey Mendez who is the founder of Boulder Baby. Boulder Baby is basically a company that specializes in making shampoo, conditioner, and lotion for babies, infants, and even adults. I selected Mrs. Mendez for my informational interview because I believe that it is important to have more women in the business industry, and because when I am older I want to be able to have my own business as well. From this interview, I learned that with knowing that business is the path you want to take for your future. You have to be able to learn how to work in small and big business before you jump into creating a business of your own. You have to be able to learn how to work in different sized business because the environment for both is very different. With this, I also learned that with wanting a successful company or business you want to be able to have a successful advertisement, and you want to give the world a good or service that they actually want. Without successful advertisement and a good or service that people want, your business might not go anywhere in the future. When completing the interview, something that Mrs. Mendez said that keeps sticking to me is that no matter if you want to start a business or already have one you will always need luck,...

...“I am a successful woman. I am well educated and also a good mother. I fulfill all criteria for a good woman, but my man and my nation do not like successful women like me.” (Health-genderviolence.org) This is a gender discrimination case based on Lubia’s real life story and she is also a victim of gender-based violence. From the very beginning, women played an important role in man society. Likewise, they have dedicated themselves to the development of man’s history but they are still suffering from gender inequality. People today have a mindset of gender equality and there are also many breakthroughs of feminist movement. However, women are still treated unequally in many places today in terms of social, education and economy. In today’s...

...Illinois, where she once was a small business owner as a homemaker. Clinton was raised in a Republic family and faithfully attended Sunday school at her local Methodist church. She graduated from high school in 1965, and then went to Wellesley College. After graduating with her Political Science Degree on May 31, 1969, she received a seven-minute standing ovation for reaching her Academic goals. My knowledge of Hillary Clinton was that she was Bill Clinton’s wife, a senator, and that she campaigned to once be President. The reason I picked Mrs. Hillary Clinton, I know she is re-running to be our next president. I wanted to learn more about her as a person, because didn’t want to go in voting just picking her because she will make history like Obama did. I’ve come to idolize her as a person from my studies and one day hope to be like her. Clinton initiated Health Care Reforms, and is the creator of the Department of Justice’s Violence Against Women. The Violence Movement, reduced aggression toward women, and helped victims of violence. She gained significant influence and power over the Democratic Nomination in 2008, through her achievements. She is a great role model and a huge advocate of feminism for women at their finest I think because of her great accomplishments, she will become the first lady president, in the 2016 election. “There cannot be true democracy unless women’s voices are heard. There cannot be true democracy unless women are given the opportunity to take responsibility...

...enthusiastic to move forward. When the leader has his or her own personal goals it shows the talent he or she has to offer others. These characteristics are to inspire an individual and give him or her personal association with the organization. According to Decker and Sullivan (2009), “A leader is anyone who uses interpersonal skills to influence others to accomplish a specific goal (p.45).” Leaders provide organization within a company and provide information to managers to help guide him or her. The accountability for leaders include, carrying out research, appropriately lead the organization into a path of profits, and excel the organization’s day-to-day operations. For this essay, the leader I chose and admire is Paul David Hewson, but his fans know him by Bono. Bono is a very successful musician and committed leader. His communication as a leader is inspiring. His vision of how his campaigns (ONE and RED), band, and himself requires dedication. He works very hard and is very dedicated to seeing his vision become a reality. Bono’s influence and inspiration empowers band members, volunteers, government, and fans. He has help obtaining his visions by working hand-in-hand with others to make his vision a reality. He told Fortune Magazine (2014),”Real leadership is when everyone else feels in charge.” When an individual has a vision then creates a plan to make it a reality that is a...
