...September 2012 Looking up I remember seeing my brilliant sister’s face, Rania, playing with me and resembling something so caring. There was never a time she wasn’t strutting with confidence. Growing up my sister always put others before herself including me. As the middle child she never refused when it came to doing something for my oldest sister and I. When it was time for Rania to graduate, and go off to college, she did not burden my parents by asking for tuition. Instead, she worked at William’s, a pipeline company, until she was able to be completely financially stable. Although, my sister had to work very hard, she never complained. I cannot recall a single moment when she was pessimistic around me even if she had a rough day. Because of her perseverance, she has caused me to have an entire new take on life. Knowing her struggles, I was able to use her life as an example to set me on the right path. She impacted me day by day without me even knowing it. As I look back at all I have accomplished in life, I realize if it wasn’t for her I would not be the man I am today. When I face adversities I refer back to my sister, and how she persevered through things much more difficult than anything I would be facing at the time. Through Cross country, Track, Football, and Basketball my sister was the thing that kept me going. Without her I would not have a strong mentality, and would not be able to see the “light” at the end of the tunnel. I now know that I should have no excuse in...

English 101 Streecar Named Desire

...Throughout the play Blanche compare’s Stanley’s behavior as animalistic. In many different situations throughout the play Stanley prove’s Blanche’s Ideal of how he acts as an animal. I believe that this is true based on how blanche describes him in these situations. The first instance where Stanley show’s how he act’s like an animal, is in the opening scene of Blanche Stella and Stanley all being together. In this scene he throw’s a piece of meat at stella as if he is an ape. Stella seem’s to show no regard to Stanley’s behavior. Blanche on the other hand is completely shocked and cant imagine anyone treating her sister that way, especially her husband. Blanche waits until she is able to get Stella alone and confront’s her about the situation. She says “ He act’s like an animal, has an animal’s habits....yes, something ape like about him, like one of those pictures I’ve seen in anthropological studies!” (74). This kind of behavior is foreign too Blanche and she cant understand how or why anyone would want to be with someone who acts in this manner. I completely agree with Blanche’s thought’s toward’s Stanley because there is no reason why any husband should treat their spouse this way. Even though it might have been more common in New Orleans at this time for men to be above women in a sense, I see no reason as to why a husband would throw meat as his wife and expect her to take it without question. The next scene in which Stanley is showed as a reference to an animal is on...

Personal Statement: I Believe In Barbecue

...I believe in barbecue. As soul food and comfort food and health food, as a cuisine of both solace and celebration. When I’m feeling good, I want barbecue. And when I’m feeling bad, I just want barbecue more. I believe in barbecue in all its regional derivations, in its ethnic translations, in forms that range from white- tablecloth presentations of cunningly sauced costillas, to Chinese take-out spareribs that stain your fingers red, to the most authentic product of the tar-paper rib shacks of the Deep South. I believe that like sunshine and great sex, no day is bad that has barbecue in it. I believe in the art of generations of pit-men working in relative obscurity to keep alive the craft of slow-smoking as it’s been practiced for as long...

Spiritual Gifts

... Shepherd tied with Showing Mercy. I completely agree with the results . I agree because I am a very compassionate woman. I love people and also willing to help those in need. I am able to sympathize and empathize with people who may have problems that others might feel uncomfortable with. I am also a very good listener. I love to share the Gospel with others and bring the lost to know Jesus Christ. I am truly blessed to have these gifts that God has given me. PART TWO: Specifically, how can you use your gifts at this time? How might you misuse your gifts? Be specific. There are many ways I can use my gifts today. In my Church there are people who often come to me to “unload” what’s going on in their Lives. I am always there to listen and give them the best advice I can. I show mercy by going with a group from the church to visit the ones who are shut-ins and letting them know that we care for them and that they are not alone. Outside the church I volunteer for Domestic and Sexually abused women’s shelter. I do a weekly Bible study and I teach some of them how to cook. I soon will be taking the required training to be a Christian Counselor. I also post Scripture, Devotionals, and prayers on my face book page. There are many ways I can misuse my gifts as well. With being capable of earning trust quickly, and empathizing with people, I need to be very careful with caring for males. I could easily be fooled into thinking...

Film Analysis: Food Inc.

...During the documentary Food Inc., Joel Salatin made the statement of “If we put glass walls on all the mega-processing facilities, we would have a different food system in this country”. Today, I’m going to tell you what he means by that and what my opinion on the statement is. What he meant by this statement was that people have no idea how their food is being made and what is being put in it. Also, people don’t realize how the animals are being treated. If something is out of site, it is out of mind. Meaning they don’t think about things like that because they can’t see it. I believe this statement is very accurate. If more people watched the documentary, or even read the book Fast Food Nation, I believe that more people are going to...

Theory of Knowledge Guide

...“What I tell you three times is true.” (Lewis Carroll) Might this formula – or a more sophisticated version of it – actually determine what we believe to be true? Repetition is our way of learning knowledge. Repetition is drilling something to memory, reinforcing the idea in our heads. It is the key to reflexive use (use without conscious thought). Your mind “learns” by repetition and reinforcement. Repetition and its effects on what we believe to be true, play a major role in the way that we accumulate general knowledge. The formula implies that repetition is equal to truth, when really repetition is just repetition. Repetition does not make a statement the truth. But a statement, if repeated often enough, can come to be accepted as truth. This leads us to the question whether a lie can be accepted as truth. From the standpoint of logic, the number of times an incorrect fact is repeated is irrelevant. It is still false. But research has shown that a statement, even an incorrect fact, if repeated often enough, can be accepted as truth. This paper will examine several research studies, influencing variables, and examples from everyday life to identify this occurrence. In addition to this, the possible effects of repetition will be discussed as well. One of the simplest ways to show how repetition causes a statement to be accepted as truth is gossip. First, someone tells a friend a statement, which can be true or false. This friend tells another friend, who tells another...

Socrates

...also important in philosophy because he liked to question people and try to find answers rather than give a long speech. One of Socrates’s most famous beliefs is that to fear death is to think oneself wise when one is not. This statement was found in the Apology which was written by Socrates’s good friend Plato. This statement was a part of Socrates’s main speech. He makes this statement in his main speech where he addresses the jury. In the main speech he discusses the accusations brought against him and proves them to be false. In addition to that, he also addresses some questions which the jury may have. In philosophy, it is important to presume what the others might argue and break it down. Socrates does so by saying the following, “someone might say: “are you not ashamed Socrates, to have followed the kind of occupation that has led to your being now in danger of death?” (Melchert). He makes this statement because he knows that the jurors and the citizens are puzzled by his reaction and the way he has been fearless under his circumstances. He responds to his own question by saying that people are wrong if they think that any good man would take the risk of life or death into account. He then goes on to make the famous statement “to fear death is no other than to think oneself wise when one is not, to think one knows what one does not know” (Melchert). Socrates says this to prove his point to the jury; his point is that it is unwise to fear the...

Creative Tendencies

...I have learned through this chapter that creative problem solving occurs less frequently then analytical problem solving. I have never really considered myself a real creative person, although I have creative my own unique and creative tendencies. As I learned many people think of creativity as being “one-dimensional” (me included) and also many of us have built up conceptual blocks which limits and blocks our problem solving effectiveness. After reading this chapter, I have a greater perspective on creativity and how to achieve it through the four types of creativity – incubation, imagination, improvement, and investment, all in which I can use in a variety of ways to bring out my creative side. On this assessment I had completed in chapter three, I picked out five statements that would indicate creative tendencies and five statements that I would consider not to indicate creative tendencies. Creative tendencies would include: Daydreaming has provided the impetus for many of my more important projects (B). I believe that daydreaming gives you the opportunity to think creatively, it gives you a chance to really dive into your own creative thinking and think outside the box. I like hobbies that involve collecting things (C). I disagreed on this; I’m more of a physical type of person and an active type of person who enjoys watching and playing sports, but I think I need to think of a more creative hobby that I may enjoy. Inspiration has nothing to do with the successful...

Auditors and Regulatory Oversight

...attempt to circumvent the rules and regulations imposed by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The mission of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is to protect investors, maintain fair, orderly, and efficient markets, and facilitate capital formation (sec.gov). One of the acts enforced by the SEC is the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX). This act places strict rules on public companies with regard to the information being reported on the company’s financial statements. Its emphasis is to protect investors and related parties from potential loss by placing the responsibility of providing accurate information on upper management and company officers. This act is also responsible for the creation of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB), which oversees the activities of the auditing profession. With all of these regulations in place, one would think that they could blindly trust the information being presented by “audited” company financial statements, but this is not the case. Fraud perpetrators have created new and creative ways to deceive company personnel, investors, lending institutions, and the general public. Sometimes this data is caught by auditors, and sometimes it isn’t, either by mistake or collusion. According to...

Written Assignment

...that “Might is Right” versus Plato’s “Might for Right” as well as a search for what is right. Another way to differentiate the two would be to say one is for what I have the right to do and that makes it right verses what is the right thing to do and what makes it right. To determine whether the claims that Thucydides is making are empirical or normative we must first define those terms and then place them in the context of his story. By definition, normative ethics is all based on value judgments. It is all about what is right and what should one do about it. From my understanding, normative ethics is more based on emotion as opposed to empirical. Empirical ethics is defined as statements that can be proved or shown through observation. One plus one equals two. When it comes to Thucydides’ story of the Athenians and Melians, I believe it is a story of empirical ethics. Thucydides describes for us the setting of this tale with some back story. It is a time of war during which the Athenians made a journey to the island of Melos. The Athenians sent emissaries to the Melians to discuss what really amounts to terms for surrender. The Athenians believe that the strong do what they want and the weak have to accept that. This statement is empirical in nature. It is not based on emotion or value. It is a statement of fact as has been proven throughout history. The strong survive and the weak either serve the strong or die. Continuing with Thucydides’ story we come...

Organizational Behavior

...Organizational Behavior Business 689 Assignment I Currently I am the President of the Board of Education for the Beecher Community School District so I chose to examine the Mission, Vision and Core Values of the district which I helped to develop. In order to develop the Mission, Vision and Core Values of Beecher Community School District we put together a strategic planning team to take on the primary role to develop a renewed mission statement, vision and core values along with a strategic plan. The team included board members along with parents, teachers and community members. The mission of Beecher Community School District is to empower students to be successful academically and socially in a global society. In order to develop our mission statement we had to ask ourselves was what is the purpose/goal of our district and what is our ultimate outcome for our students. We believe our mission statement informs parents and the community exactly what they can expect from students after they graduate from the Beecher School District. It also lets our employees know what their purpose and goal is. The mission statement also serves as a self - evaluation tool. When we look at our test scores and our students are failing this means they will not be able to compete academically socially which means we need to rethink or adjust our curriculum so we can achieve our mission. A mission statement is extremely important for any organization. The next task...

Assess the Claim That There Are Objective Moral Statements

...objective moral statement is a statement that has a definite truth-value; they are not subjective, even if you are not aware of whether or not a statement is true or false the fact of the matter is it is either one or the other. This is a cognitivist view, although there are many branches of cognitivism they all have one thing in common, they believe that moral statements express a genuine belief. Moral Realism is a cognitivist theory, they believe that all moral statements have a truth value and there are moral facts which determine that truth-value. Moral Realism is not to be confused with Universalism (the theory that there are absolute values) because a moral realist does not believe that a particular moral judgement has to apply to all situations. For example one could say objectively ‘abortion is wrong’ but in certain situations it is morally acceptable or right. So abortion could be viewed as wrong after a careless pregnancy where a man and woman do not use protection to prevent it, but still be viewed as an acceptable option for a rape victim who becomes pregnant. A moral realist would argue that this was a moral fact. However an opposing view to moral realism is the non-cognitivist view, Emotivism. Emotivists believe that when you are expressing a moral statement you are merely expressing an emotional response, this is different to expressing an emotional opinion. An opinion can either be true or false whereas an expression of emotion cannot be. For example, if I was to bang...

Rebecca Black made this song in hopes to become a YouTube sensation although it happened it didn’t stay a sensation for very long. Although some liked the song most did not. As you scroll through some nice comments and some hateful comments on YouTube you notice that people are mean and saying she can’t sing is true. When I first heard this song I was already aware that I would hate this song but I sat through it anyway in hopes that it would get better but it didn’t. I was relieved when the song came to an end and so were half the viewers that left a comment talking about how bad the song was such as “this song sucks”...

Mission vs. Shareholder

...that the shareholders make money from investing in the company itself. I believe that the best model depends on what you are looking to do. Certain situations would call for a different model as the best choice. When it comes to non-profit organizations, they deal with only certain segments of the economy: such as health, education, social services and the arts. With non-profits, most of the goods that are produced are paid for and used by different people. Now that is not the case with for-profit companies. With for-profits companies, products are assumed to be easily judged in terms of quality. This is because the people that buy the product, use the product. With non-profit organizations, because it is based with healthcare and things of that nature, the people that buy it, are not always the ones taking the advantage of it. It is also hard for someone to judge the quality of something that they do not even use. With a lot of the non-profit organizations out there today, they will provide healthcare for third world countries that can’t afford it. The mission statement plays mainly three roles in a non-profit organization. The three functions that they serve include boundary functions, act to motivate both staff and donors, and help in the process of evaluation of the organization. The broadness or narrowness of the mission statement can hurt or help the organization. In the corporate sense, they believe that the broader the...
