I Immigrant
I am keeping this journal so that I may share my journey to America with my family. I will update this as often as possible so that my family won't seem so far away. It will be like I am speaking to them. This way I won't feel so homesick. I intend to mail it back home to Sicily a little at a time. I am scared and, excited to be going to America where I will find more opportunities.
It is hard leaving home but, I have to go my family is so poor and, I am just another mouth to feed. I hope to find work in America, the pay in America is so much higher than it is here. I want to save enough money to buy a farm, once I do I can marry my fiancée Sophia and, provide a good life for her. She is so beautiful that my heart aches at the thought of being apart from her. (Molnar, 2010).
I am sailing on the St. Michele I think the name is a good omen for a Catholic like me. It puts me at ease as I climb on board. ("Italy Genweb", 2004). The feeling of comfort does not last very long, I am traveling on the steerage deck, which is open with no protection from cold and, stormy weather. I am always exposed to the damp sea air. Days pass by and turn into weeks it is a long miserable trip. Food is hard to come by; we have to fight our way to the kitchens and, then fight over raw potatoes, or; rice. Even when we have the luxury of finding food there is no way to prepare it. The worse is the crew members, if we are caught they beat us unmercifully. It is chaos all over, and the mothers cry as they watch their children starve. The smell is almost of bearable the unwashed bodies pressed together. I am watching people die; they throw the pitiful bodies into the ocean without a second though. I am weakening; I am not sure I can make it. Then I see her the Statue of Liberty, many of my fellow passengers see her too. I watch as smiles come to their haggard faces and, I can't help it I smile as well. The long journey is over. We begin to kiss each other and bid each other farewell we have made it. The nightmare journey is quite over yet, first they come aboard to inspect the ship to make sure there are no contagious diseases on board. Then I am stripped down and, scrubbed in a tub of water. After a cold and miserable bath I have to see a doctor first they make sure I am physically and mentally sound they say. It all works out They give me a clean bill of health but, I have to be interviewed by an official. I am lucky I have papers so; They do not have to tag me W.O.P like some of the others. Now I set off on my way to find work and, a place to stay. ("The History Box", 2014).
I originally had intended to remain in New York however I have traveled to Boston, Massachusetts where I have found work in a textile mill. I live in a tenement house with a lot of other people. The conditions are horrible but; it will be worth it in the end. The house is overcrowded and, it smells. It is drafty in the winter and, hot in the summer. There is insufficient sewage and, people have begun to get sick. (Molnar, 2010).
The job I have taken was open because; the other workers are on strike. The people here hate us and call us dagoes. I can't help it I needed a job. The bosses pay us less than the others; we make even less than the blacks. We are at the lowest level it seems, I just pray that I can be strong and, make it. I work as a loader; I work 14 hour shifts seven days a week it is grueling and, backbreaking work. (Molnar, 2010). I try to go to church, but even that is hard here you see, the Irish run most of the Catholic churches here. Still I am hopeful because a friend told me there is a mostly Italian Catholic church not very far from here. ("Immigration In America", 2012).
I am very lucky after two years of working in the factory; I got a letter from my friend inviting me to come work with him. He works at the Contadina food company. It is a business started by Italians in New York. It is a good job and, fair pay. I am able to save up enough money to send for my beloved Sophia. She arrives and, we are married. We have many children and, a good life. Even though this is not the life I intended it was still a happy one. My kids all grow up to become successful one even manages to go to college and become a doctor. It is the American dream fulfilled. ("Immigration", 2014).

My Life

...other year if I am completely honest about it. There were no resolutions made, no tears or kisses exchanged at midnight on New Year’s Eve, hell I didn’t even go out that night, stayed in and just chilled with my girl and 4 month old son and watched the ball drop in times square with some Imo’s pizza and sparkling apple cider. The events that would ultimately shape the man writing this were already in motion and there was honestly nothing I could do to change or stop them, and honestly even if I could I don’t think I would’ve. I knew that in just 12 days I would be embarking on a journey that was 2 years in the making. I first signed up for the Navy back in 2000 during a time that I honestly can say was a good time for me. I was a junior in high school, working at Red Lobster, had a car, and a level of popularity that I had worked quite hard to attain and would kill to maintain. I decided that the Navy was the best option for me because I knew that I wasn’t really the college type even though I was very smart but I knew I lacked the discipline to truly excel in an environment where no one made you do anything, and partying was as much the norm as pre requisites and electives. So I decided, after seeing a few friends join and have some moderate success that the Navy was going to be my future. Now you have to understand that I was a kid who thought he was fearless and the prospect of military life had always intrigued me in some way, shape, or form as long as I could remember...

Female Pirates

...actually very good luck, and their loss to a ship often brought an end to that ships sailing days. The women that sailed the seas came from all walks of life; there were royals such as Queen Teuta of Illyria who sailed in the 200’s B.C., as well as the Irish seafaring clanswoman, Grace O’Malley, who was practically royalty in that culture in the 1500’s. There were also illegitimate daughters of maids and merchants such as Anne Bonny and Mary Read who sailed the Caribbean in the 1600’s, and finally a Chinese prostitute who controlled one of the most powerful pirate fleets the world has ever seen in the 1800’s. Female pirates were once again seen on the seas recently when a woman pirate named Sister Ping (Ching Chui Ping) smuggled Chinese immigrants to the United States and England was caught and imprisoned in 1990. The Pirate code forbade women from being on board a pirate ship, so women typically dressed and carried themselves as a man in order to become a pirate. These women pirates were truly exceptional in their determination and strength of character to seek their fortune in what was not only a dangerous way of life, but also a make dominated occupation. In order to succeed on a pirate ship these women has to have exceptional strength, agility, and physical stamina to endure life on a ship and get their fair share of the gold. Two of the most well-known women pirates to ever sail the seas were Mary Read and Anne Bonny. Mary Read was an illegitimate child born outside...

External factors would influence controlling; learning and changing with the market competition and the ever changing market. Internal and external factors specifically influence innovation, diversity, and ethics. Apple remains flexible and universal due to producing consumer needed products, products that are a common need and ethically leading the way as a successful company. Apple Inc. formerly Apple Computer, Inc. was founded by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in 1976. During the first phase of management; the planning process, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak designed the Apple I, a handcrafted computer that was sold for $666.66. For more than twenty years Apple Computer was mostly manufacturing personal computers with their own integrated software called the Macintosh, marketed as Mac. The company suffered low sales and market share during the 1990’s mainly affected by external factors such as the market domination of Bill Gates and his line of computer software Microsoft Windows. In an effort to attract new consumers Apple shifted their philosophy by changing their products into simple designs, which are known for being more “user friendly”. The company had to go back to planning; the first phase of...

I kept loosing focus while reading "Where Are You Going". I have always had a hard time with reading comprehension, and I really have to engage myself to keep going. "Two Kinds" kept my interest with ease. Neither one of my parents forced me to do anything. Sure, they guided me, but they always gave me choices. They never told me they wanted me to be rich or famous, or to do things they never done. Sometimes, I wish they provided a bit more direction, maybe I wouldn't have to be taking this class so late in life. When watching some of these reality shows like "Toddlers and Tiara's", you can clearly see that the parents are in it for their own gratification. 2. What do you feel is significant about this piece of literature and why? (Discuss possible themes and the author’s intentions.) The theme of this piece is dealing with conflict. It highlights how far some parents go to try to better help their children's future welfare. Ann was very content just being 'normal', but her mother wanted her to by much much more. Maybe it was only for self gratification, or maybe it was truly a sincere hope of her mother than Ann would not have to suffer with the same life challenges she had to. 3. I was thirty nine weeks and so ready to have this baby. I was having pain and because time was getting near I was very nervous. I hadn’t had a C-section in twelve years. My boyfriend (Dean) of eight years wasn’t home, after trying to call and texts him and receives no answer I ask my oldest daughter (Shaneque) will she go ahead and take me to the hospital. Illegal Recruiting

...Abstract College football has become a major money making event. Major college schools can bring in well over one hundred million dollars over a season. In 2008 Texas brought in $120,288,370 for the school that also help fund other sports throughout the university. (Robbins, 2009) This is due to the major network deals, sponsorships, donations from boosters, attending major college bowls, and many other benefits of being a major college program. These programs are expected to compete for a championship each and every year and are expected to fill the seats that normally average between eighty thousand to one hundred thousand seats. In order to do this there is high competition to get the very best players all around the country and the NCAA has very strict guidelines on what colleges can do to persuade the players to come play there. This isn’t a new problem but with modern technology the problem has become very visible because NCAA officials and competing schools are able to trace the exact moves that teams are doing for the players. Also players are being offered money and benefits that seventeen and eighteen year old kids have never seen before in their life. Penalties are becoming harsher every year and coaches and schools are starting to really suffer but what there is a fine line to walk between cheating and just putting your best effort towards getting the player. Process of Investigating Illegal Recruiting The NCAA has broken the process of investigations...

Church

...Religion remains the one of the deepest and holiest concerns of mankind. The birth of Christianity is momentous among all the religions, where the history of mankind before his birth is considered as the preparation for his coming and the history after his death as the diffusion of his spirit and the progress of mankind. Christian history begins with Jesus of Nazareth, a Jew who was born in a small corner of the Roman Empire. Not much is known about his early life but when he was around 30 years old he was baptized by John the Baptist and had visions of being blessed by the Almighty. A group of 12 disciples followed him and spread his teachings of condemning religious hypocrisies and interpreted the Mosaic law in different innovative ways. They believed in the ‘Kingdom of God’, finding their Messiah in Jesus. Within a few years, oppositions built up against Jesus and he was executed by crucifixion in the hands of Romans. Most of Jesus' followers scattered everywhere, dismayed at such an unexpected outcome. Three days later, women who went to anoint his body reported that the tomb was empty and an angel told them Jesus rose from the dead. The disciples, who were initially skeptical, later came to believe the women. They reported that Jesus appeared to them on several occasions and then ascended into heaven before their eyes. Soon the number of followers, in the name of ‘Christians’, grew rapidly. The most instrumental man behind the creation of the church was Paul, a Jew by birth...

Project Mini Paper

...well. I handed out twenty-five surveys around my office and surrounding offices. I informed them it was for school purposes and to be candid as they would not be viewed by anyone within our office. I only have about 5 still out and expect them back this week. The early results appear to be following right along the major study conducted last year of our organization. I have an appointment with our organizational training development lead this Monday to discuss the original survey and its intent. Along with the results, I expect to discover how it was decided to determine the questions. How the results were used to set up a training plan is also on my agenda. One issue I discovered was how I was going to track the data from the survey. I decided on a simple Excel Spreadsheet to take an initial look at the data. This gives a great overview quickly. I simply take each survey and enter the selection into the spreadsheet and review the total numbers after. The data can also be utilized in a graph for analysis. I also decided to use paper surveys instead of doing it online because of security issues. I discussed it with my supervisor and we came to the conclusion that our security office might have issue with it. So to ward off any possible conflict I decided paper. Other than that there were no issues with doing the survey. When looking at the individual level analysis I am looking for each of the responders to do a self assessment of their own needs. I think...

Discussion Board

...Iesha Fox July 19th, 2012 MGMT 250 Discussion Board 1 Prof. John Hargiss Entrepreneurship Discussion Question 1 Over the past few years, our economy has gotten worse and worse, but I would still take the risk of opening up my own business. To me, now would be the perfect time to open up. I think this because no matter how bad the economy is, that won’t stop anyone from going out and purchasing anything from stores. Although there are pros and cons to starting your own business right now, I would still go for it. I believe before anyone opens up their own business, you have to know what you are getting into. You have to have a lot of knowledge and have to be very committed to what you are about. I think before starting your own, you need to at least work in a business for maybe two or three years. That way you know what goes on inside the business. Try to talk to someone that owns a business so that you can get some key pointers what will help along the way. Another important thing to consider before you get started is money. You have to have money to make money. I know it takes a lot of money to get started, so you have to think are you really prepared to start your own business. Most people try to get loans from banks. But to do this, you need a credit score of “700”. You need to be able to manage your money, if you don’t know how the business won’t last long because you’ll soon go bankrupt because you aren’t keeping up. The statement “A student whose main activity...

Napolean

...Professor February 4, 2012 Napoleon was born August 15, 1769 in the city of Ajaccio. He started his military prowess young attending the French military school for aristocrats. He was made fun of and called little corporal. In 1785 he was a second lieutenant in the French army. He was born into a poor family and was subject to the education of the public. Napoleon was known for his military feats in during and after the French revolution. He conquered Austrian generals during his reign. He installed the Napoleonic code which is just and fair still used today by the United States of America. With his reform of government and economy along with his military strategies being his two greatest accomplishments, I believe Napoleon gathered pride and monetary funds and transformed that pride to the nation from his military accomplishments however he may have taken them too far but his accomplishments with the everyday life of the French peoples such as great governing, justice, and a great economy stuck for generations to come. One of Napoleon’s greatest accomplishments was the transformation of the French government, economy, and most important of all the Napoleonic code. While his military dreams may have put him over the edge his changes in the legal system, the administration of the government, and education boded well for the French people. In the code people were created equal not counting whether you were wealthy or not. In addition was the fact...

Yolo

...NELSON 1. I told a boy that I had a crush on him five minutes after I saw him making out with some girl at a house party. After confessing my true feelings, I lunged at him so we could have a make out session of our own. Surprisingly, it worked. The power of YOLO, you guys! 2. One night recently I went to an ex-boyfriend’s birthday party and waited around until everyone left so I could seduce him. My plan backfired, however, because by the time everyone left, I was so wasted that I ended up just passing out on the couch. The next morning, my ex was like “…” and I was like “…” and we both were like “YOLO.” 3. Anytime I eat after 4 a.m., it’s predicated upon the excuse of “YOLO.” There should be a sandwich at the deli just named “YOLO.” “I’ll take the YOLO to go and, no, I prefer not to talk about it.” 4. Last month, I stayed up till 6 a.m. with a beautiful boy I just met. He was so gorgeous but so, so dumb. I don’t ordinarily do things like that. I don’t just go home with beautiful boys and stay up till 6 a.m. I am a lady, dammit! But, I swear it was the YOLO taking over me.
