...Blues Essay I chose to do my essay on Tracy Chapman’s 1996 release of “Give Me One Reason,” which can be found at the following link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2kEx5BLoC4. Chapman begins this duple meter song with an electric guitar solo playing the melody of the tune for one measure when her vocals join singing one complete chorus. The dynamic range of the song is minimal throughout but after the introduction of the duo guitar and vocal solo all the other instruments join in intensifying the energy of the tune while keeping the same medium paced tempo. There is a variety of timbres played in this song including the piano, bass guitar, electric guitars, drums, and tambourine. There are also female and male background vocals joining in sporadically adding to the ending of some choruses by singing either “You can see me turning” or “Why I should stay.” Halfway through the song after the melody is played about four times with the chorus sung two complete times there is an electric guitar solo for a 12-bar phrase. The homophonic texture of this tune provides the melody with a simple accompaniment of at least five different tunes. I found it difficult to listen to this song without moving my upper body back and forth, singing the words, and tapping my feet. Even after taking a break from the song I would still sing the main chorus. This leads me to believe this song is most definitely program music. This song provoked me to move my body. It stimulated my response...

...Is The Mind and The Body Separate Elements? Descartes proposed that body (physical) and mind (spiritual) are separate entities (dualism). Empiricists propose that the mind is a physical property of the brain. Similarly, some philosophers think that selfawareness is a sensation perceived by the brain like any other of our physical senses. In chapter 4, the discussion is about whether the mind and body are two separate entities. In Chapter 4 the story, I Sing The Body Electric, by Walt Whitman, he male is not less “ T the soul nor more ” (Kass, p.211). Whitman believed that the mind and the body were one unit. In the story, hat the body knows, W by Chrita Banerjee Divakaruni. Aparna realizes that the mental aspect of things is in fact in conjunction with the body. Some stories throughout the text conclude that the mind and the body are completely separate from each other, but we often wonder if machinery could take over our existence. In this article, we determine from Antonio Regalado that he Brain is not computable. The debate is whether or not the brain can reproduced, for example like a lung or a kidney has. Some individuals believe that the brain can ...

...alt Whitman Born on May 31, 1819, Walt Whitman was the second son of Walter Whitman, a housebuilder, and Louisa Van Velsor. The family, which consisted of nine children, lived in Brooklyn and Long Island in the 1820s and 1830s. At the age of twelve, Whitman began to learn the printer's trade, and fell in love with the written word. Largely self-taught, he read voraciously, becoming acquainted with the works of Homer, Dante, Shakespeare, and the Bible. Whitman worked as a printer in New York City until a devastating fire in the printing district demolished the industry. In 1836, at the age of 17, he began his career as teacher in the one-room school houses of Long Island. He continued to teach until 1841, when he turned to journalism as a full-time career. He founded a weekly newspaper, Long-Islander, and later edited a number of Brooklyn and New York papers. In 1848, Whitman left the Brooklyn Daily Eagle to become editor of the New Orleans Crescent. It was in New Orleans that he experienced at first hand the viciousness of slavery in the slave markets of that city. On his return to Brooklyn in the fall of 1848, he founded a "free soil" newspaper, the Brooklyn Freeman, and continued to develop the unique style of poetry that later so astonished Ralph Waldo Emerson. In 1855, Whitman took out a copyright on the first edition of Leaves of Grass (self-published), which consisted of twelve untitled poems and a preface. He published the volume himself, and sent a copy to...

...The Doll Raven: Narcisco was christened and his mother called him Sising. But when he took a fancy to his mother’s old rag dolls, his father decided to call him Boy. His father has a masculine body, from the low broad forehead and bushy brows to the wide cleft chest. James: We’ll call him, Boy. He is my son, a male, the offspring of a male. A man is fashioned by heredity and environment. I’ve given him enough red for his blood, but a lot of good it will do him with the kind of environment you are giving him. That Doll you gave him- Niqui: I didn’t give him that doll, he happened it upon my aparador when I was clearing it. He took pity on it and drew it out. He asked me to make a dress for it. James: And you made him one, you encourage him to play with it! Raven: Dona Enchay looked at her husband embarrassedly, brushing an imaginary wisp of hair from her forehead, she said: Niqui: I had many cuttings, and I thought I’d make use of them. James: You are such a child yourself, Enchay. You still want to play with dolls. That is why you refuse to cut your son’s hair short! You’ll make a sissy out of him and I will not allow it! Boy! Boy! Boy! (his eyes hardened and pulse ticked under his right ear.) Raven: Don Endong laid his cane on the sill, Dona Enchay moved close to him and passed an arm around his waist. Niqui: The curls will not harm him, Marido. They are so pretty. They make him look like the little boys in the story books. His hair does not make him a girl. He looks...

...unknown/Like a rolling stone,” seems more menacing and sneering, as if implying that these places that this generation has idealized might have been a little harsher than many people are willing to admit. The layered composition of the song was an important stepping-stone of Dylan’s transition of acoustic folkie to world famous bandleader. The Beatles – “Hey Jude” The most popular song by the most popular band to ever exist is a slow-burning ballad written by Paul McCartney that was released in 1968 and stayed at Number One for nine weeks. The verses, which were supposedly written by McCartney to comfort John Lennon’s son Julian during his parents’ divorce, build upon themselves starting with just McCartney on piano and then end with a group sing-along chorus that is still engraved into the collective consciousness of the world. As with anything the Beatles have done, this song became the blueprint for every similar-sounding song written after its release. Bruce Springsteen – “Born to Run” Written in 1974 as a last-ditch effort at stardom,...

...Walt Whitman Through the history of the United States there have been a countless numbers of poets. With them came an equal number of writing styles. Certainly one of the most unique poets to write life’s story through his own view of the world and with the ambition to do it was Walter Whitman. Greatly criticized by many readers of his work, Whitman was not a man to be deterred. Soon he would show the world that he had a voice, and that it spoke with a poet’s words. Afoot and lighthearted I take to the open road, Healthy, free, the world before me, the long brown path before me leading wherever I choose. Thus Whitman began his “Song of the Open Road”. This paper will attempt to describe his life and poetry in a way that does justice to the path he chose. He was a man who grew up impoverished, who wrote from his experiences, and who tried to lift his fellow men above life’s trivialities. These are the points to be discussed on these pages. To know the essence of Walter Whitman, you would have to understand the heart of his writing. For he is in his pen. Walter Whitman was born in West Hills, Long Island, New York, on May 31, 1819 . He did not have much opportunity for education in his early life. His parents were mostly poor and illiterate- his father a laborer, while his mother was a devout Quaker. Whitman was one of nine children and little is known about his youth except that two of his siblings were imbeciles. No wonder he demonstrated such an insight for life in his poems...

...Description: The behavior under consideration in this paper is the murder and sexual assault of Catherine ‘Kitty’ Genovese. This behavior may be manifested in a number of ways by a variety of individuals for a number of different reasons; such as violent attacks on women. While technically defined as a crime by the state or federal statutes the behavior in question is also regarded as deviant, norm-violating and immoral. It is the purpose of this paper to first describe the murder and sexual assault of Catherine ‘Kitty’ Genovese and then to relate it to two chapters in the textbook entitled ‘It’s a Crime: Woman and Justice” by Roslyn Muraskin. In addition to that I will also examine the fact that thirty-eight witnesses heard or watch the thirty-five minute killing of Ms.Genovese and not one of them assisted or called for help until after she was dead. The murder was committed on the early morning of March 13, 1964 at about 3:15am in the New Gardens section of Queens in New York. Catherine, who was also known as Kitty had just gotten off of work, where she was a manger at a bar. She parked her car in a Long Island Railroad parking lot about 20 feet away from her apartment. As she began to lock her door to her car, she noticed a figure in the dark that was moving quickly toward her. Becoming alarmed she began to walk quickly and then ran as she realized the stranger was following her. She must have thought that since the entrance to her building was so close...

...How can I stop him kicking and biting? Expert Answer Penney Hames Penney Hames is a clinical child psychologist and journalist. Many two and three year olds go through an aggressive phase. But with love and firmness you can show them how to behave. Toddlers hit and bite, kick and punch because it is a sure fire way to get your attention, something your children crave. You need to show them that it doesn't work. As soon as he hits out (don't wait) tell him that because he has hit or bitten he must now sit in 'time out' for two minutes (use a minute for each year of his life). Say this as calmly as you can and then don't say anything else. Next, lead him firmly but kindly to a designated chair (preferably one from which his feet can neither touch the floor nor kick the walls) and leave him to sit. Do not send him to his room or to the bottom step. You need to keep an eye on him, and he needs as few distractions as possible. A chair in the kitchen is great. If he gets up, take him back immediately. Tell him that the time out will only begin when he is sitting. Put your hand on his leg to encourage him to stay. Do not let him off if he says he's sorry, he needs to sit still first. Don't talk to him during his time out or allow any one else to either. Use the two minutes to calm yourself down. When the time is up, ask him to apologise and then forgive and forget. Eventually your toddler will get the message. Your toddler is learning what he can and cannot do...
