The three people I have chosen for this essay are Ida B. Wells, Emmett Till, and B.B. King. Ida B. Wells worked for civil rights for African-Americans. Emmett Tills death made the United States look at its racial policies. B.B. King was a musician/ singer/ songwriter. All three of them made their mark not only on Mississippi but also the world.
Ida B. Wells, was born on July 16, 1862 in Holly Springs, Mississippi. She died on March 25, 1931 in Chicago Illinois. Ida B. Wells was an African-American journalist and actist who led an anti-lynching crusade in the United States. She stands as one of the leaders and defenders of our democracy. Her parents, who were slaves were able to support their seven kids because her mother was a “famous” cook and her father was a skilled carpenter. It was Memphis where she first began to fight for racial and gender justice. In 1884 she asked by a conductor of the Chesapeake & Ohio to leave her seat. He died on August 28, 1955 in Money Mississippi. Emmett Till was an African-American teenager that was murdered for whistling in a store and a white women thought he was flirting with her. Emmett Till was visiting his relatives in Mississippi. When he talked to 21-year-old Carolyn Bryant, the proprietor of a small grocery store there. Nights later Carolyn’s husband Roy and his half-brother J.W. Milam went to till’s great-uncles house. They took Emmett Till away to a barn where they beat him and gouged one of his eyes out. Before shooting him in the head then they disposed his body in the river. His body was returned to Chicago with his mother, who had raised him insisted on a public funeral service with an open casket to show the world the brutality of the killing. Exposed the world to more than her son’s death. Her decision focused attention not only on American racism and the barbarism of lynching but also limitations of American
