Reading Career

...career as a reader, I have read many books from when I was a kid to the present. I have read many different types of books including children’s books, comic books, drama books, adventure books, autobiographies, fiction and nonfiction. In my career as a reader, my reading experiences as a child, my favorite book as a child and the books I read in grade 9 have influenced my reading career. My reading experiences as a child are one of the three things that have influenced my reading career. When I was very little and had a hard time reading, before I would go to bed my mom or dad would read me a story. The books were about 15 pages long and were an adventure story. My mom and dad read books to be almost every day of the week and sometimes on the weekends. When I was able to read all by myself I got a library card so I could sign out books that I wanted to read by myself. I usually signed out either sports books or adventure books. These books were usually fiction. At school there were times where we could read, so I read a lot at school. My favorite book as a child is the second thing that has impacted my reading career. As a child I would read a lot of different kinds of books, but one of my favorite book series as a child was the books Brady Brady. When I was growing up as a kid I loved to play hockey. I loved the book Brady Brady because it was about hockey and as a kid that’s all I thought about. I also liked many other sports books like Brady Brady but it was without doubt...

Science

...literacy was not an issue that concerned me. I did not especially like reading, but it was a normal part of school so I just did as I was told. It was not until a school program called “Book It” came to my school that I realized being literate is not only important, but that reading can also be fun and actually exciting. I grew up more concerned with how my recent baseball game went or what I was going to do with my guy friends on the weekend. “Book It” taught me not only to enjoy reading but respect the opportunity to get to read whenever I wanted. My outlook on reading completely changed when I was in elementary school. I was coaxed into reading by being rewarded pizza if I read so many books. Since then I have realized the value of being literate and how important it is to not only myself, but to society as a whole to be able to pick up a book, read, and comprehend what the author has laid out before us. Perhaps you are not familiar with the “Book It” program, so laying some groundwork is important. The basic concept of the program is that reading a designated amount of books (during my years in the program it was ten books) equated into receiving a free personal pizza at Pizza Hut. This may seem trivial to adults, but as a nine-year-old boy, the reward was everything. Upon hearing about the program in school, I just wanted to read ten books so that I could get that free pizza. I didn’t even care what the books were; I just wanted to read them so I could enjoy...

Learning How To Read

...in a book is the best feeling ever. Growing up, I could remember from a young age my mother reading all different types of Disney books to me. I loved the Disney books that had a princess in it because when I was younger, I thought I was going to become a princess when I grew up, of course, that didn’t happen. For most of my life, up to age seven, my mom or teachers read to me because I had a speech delay and a learning disability that made it difficult for me to read alone. I would pretend to a read a book by myself, but I never really got the concept of reading and understanding what I was reading till age seven. At age seven is when I...

Gathering Blue Book Report

...Gathering Blue book report Chase Marsh 9th The book I read over the summer was Gathering Blue. The author of this book is Lois Lowry. I had never read any of her books. when I first saw the title, it did spark my interest. The genre of this book is fiction. I think the title of this book does adequately capture the message of the text because when Kira meets Annabella, she teaches Kira how to make dyes for her knitting. But Kira realizes that there is no way to create the color blue because the community does not know how to create it. I think the title of the book is interesting. Some of the parts of the book that I like was when Annabella dies because this made the book interesting and Jo must learn to persevere through...

Morell

..." Abelardo Morell – A Book of Books A visual tribute to the printed word, this ode to books will be irresistible to anyone who treasures the touch of fine paper and the special allure of a clothbound volume. A Book of Books showcases Abelardo Morell's elegant black and-white photographs of unusual books - an impossibly large dictionary, illustrated volumes whose characters appear to leap off the page, and water-damaged books that take on sculptural form. Nicholson Baker has written extensively about books and libraries. His preface is the ideal complement to Morell's photographs in this beautifully produced book lover's book. Bookish quotations from literary sources including Hawthorne, Borges, Cocteau, and others accompany the photographs throughout. A Tree Grows In Brooklyn Analysis

...addiction this summer. I was required to read two books, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith and Calico Joe by John Grisham. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is a book essentially a book about what it means to be human. The book is about a family’s life in poverty and their struggle to get out of it. Calico Joe is about an aspiring, young baseball player who is breaking all the records. Then a tragic incident happens causing his baseball dreams to be ruined. When reading these books you learn the true meaning of “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” At first glance, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith seemed very intimidating. The mere size of the book made me think it...

Alice In Wonderland By Richard Rodriguez: Poem Analysis

...wheelchair in a store, but I could. As a ten year-old who stayed in and out of the hospital, whirling from doctors’ offices to specialists and back again, I was prohibited from doing the very things which kids like to do and instead found my enjoyment in books. I can still recall the first time I cracked the spine of Lewis Carol’s “Alice in Wonderland” and the sense of calm that overtook my body as I lost myself in the delightful absurdity of his writing. I read his books and poems, along with many other works at a time when I was in constant pain from my chronic illness. Being an introverted child,...

Essay 1

...Looking back, I remember when I was in fourth or fifth grade and my teacher told us we were reading a book and doing a book report on it. I was always up for anything, but when she started reading the book each day I found myself not even listening to what she was saying. I would be thinking about all of the other things I’d rather be doing. Then, we were to write a book report on it. “What?” “...a book report?” No way was I going to write a paper on something that couldn’t keep my attention. I believe at that time I had probably read the first and last chapter and vaguely put together bits and pieces I heard the teacher read throughout the entire book. From that point on I knew I was going to have trouble reading books. Every time I heard a teacher say, “book report” I’d cringe! Needless to say, I probably didn’t get a very good grade on my book report. In middle school, one of the books we were assigned to read was Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. I was unable to connect with the book just from reading the title and to make matters worse it takes place during the Great Depression. I’ve always visualized that being a very depressing, difficult time and because of that I don’t particularly like that time period. Day after day, we’d read this book and I specifically remember not looking forward going to class because it was ‘reading day’ and I hated it. We finally finished the book and my teacher said ‘book report.’ I felt myself cringe! That day I went home to...

Here It Is

...I chose to put myself in the role of a Kindergarten teacher. I have selected three high quality books that this age would find appealing. The first book I picked was “I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More”. This book was written by Karen Beaumont. This book can be used in many ways to support intellectual growth. It can be used to support prediction. You can encourage the children to predict by asking open ended questions like “how do you think Mom will feel when she see’s that she painted on the walls” or “where do you think she will paint next”? This book is also great for working on rhyming words and rhythm. The second book I picked is “Wemberly Worried” written by Kevin Henkes. I picked this book for the many activities and conversations you can have within the subject. Two of the ways this book will support their intellectual growth would be in feelings, communication and self-regulation. Most children can relate to being worried. In kindergarten many children are still working on describing and recognizing feelings beyond the basic happy, sad and mad. The third book I would use is “Countdown to Kindergarten” by Alison Mcghee. This book would be wonderful all year but also in the fall when children can relate to counting down to starting Kindergarten. As with the previously mentioned books this book will also support intellectual growth in many ways. With this book you can work on counting and comparing, among other things. Common Core standards that these books could all support...

The Host

...Host ‘The Host’ was a very interesting novel to read and discuss. Reading the novel made me think of how someone could portrait the scenes in a movie or a visual act. Therefore, watching the movie made things even more interesting. The novel had quite a few scenes that could have been shown in the movie and made the movie more like the book. Also, changes of character appearance really changed and got some focused off the movie. One of the main character difference that I found interesting was the Seeker. The Seeker from the movie was not what I expected after reading the novel. While reading a novel I always have interesting thoughts such as, what if there was a movie that portrayed this book? Would all the scenes be shown on the movie or would they take some out? Would the characters look the way they are described? As I was reading the novel ‘The Host” I imagined and made pictures in my head of how each character looked by the way the book described it. I would always have the picture in my head of how the characters looked to me. After finishing the novel and proceeding to watch the movie I expected the characters to look somewhat how I imagined. First of all Melanie looked somewhat how I imagined, young and innocent looking. I imagined Wanda like some sort of bright, flashy soul looking thing, and that’s how it kind of looked in the movie. Yet, I found one big difference in a character. The Seeker did not look nothing like I imagined or how it was described in the novel...

The Importance Of Reading

...wanted to do. Sure when I was little it was a good way to keep me entertained but as time has gone on and technology has grown, reading has become more of a chore. When I was younger I thought of reading as an okay thing. It wasn't terrible and it wasn't something I dreaded doing. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become less and less fond of books. There's a good chance that my liking of literature has decreased because when you get older the books you're supposed to read have more words, bigger words, and less pictures. Maybe if it were acceptable for me to read the books I read as a kid I would enjoy reading more. The books of my childhood were the best. My six year old self thought Dr. Seuss was an artist with words. The B Book was a work of pure genius. Without a doubt that...

Fall Reading Project: In Case You Missed It

...of books to choose from. I’m glad I picked In Case You Missed It.I chose your book because it was the most realistic book of them all. When I was reading what your book was about I realised that this was the book that could teach an actual lesson to it’s readers.I’m glad I picked your book because it left me wanting more after I had finished reading it. The way you wrote about the bank protesters caused a huge lead to the plot. When writing about the protesters you explained everything they did to expose Sammy’s family. All these events lead up to how Sammy’s diary was leaked to the whole world. One of my favorite characters was Sammy. At the beginning of the book Sammy went from having two best friends and stressing about tests and grades to losing both friends but becoming aware of her mistakes and owning up to them. Sammy changed from being a shy stressed, high school student at the beginning of the book to a bold, mother...
