Description of a day I can remember
May 15th 2010, at 3:11 in the morning and the 15 hours on the plane to New York was nearly over. I felt restless and jet lagged due to the distance I had to travel early in the morning. The plane slowly landed as I tried to wake up my friend Mike who laid in bed like a lifeless deer. Suddenly an adrenaline rushed through my spine causing me to shiver as the pilot announced we were finally free to go.He quickly woke up breathing heavily as if he just had a heart attack. As he regained his senses I could still see the slap mark I gave him. “Damn that felt good,” I murmured under my breath.
“What hit me?” Mike asked confusingly.
“Nothing, we just landed mate,” I replied with a grin.
Our tattered up brown bags were all ready to go as soon as we got off the plane and we hurried along as we didn’t want to be late for this once in a life time opportunity to watch Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather fight against Amir ‘King’ Khan. As we stepped out, a cold chill welcomed us and grey clouds gathered above us. We hastily rushed towards the yellow cab and demanded to be at the arena as soon as possible.
The clock ticked nervously closer towards 10pm as the traffic slowed us down. I got more anxious by the second. My heart started to beat uncontrollably and I suddenly had an urge to escape.
“Forget this Mike, let’s go on foot,” I demanded as I flung open the cab door and zoomed past the cabs, avoiding the thundering traffic. The pungent smell of spices overwhelmed me, wafting up my nose causing me to feel queasy. However with my destination in sight, I dashed towards it until suddenly…
I stopped. I had to. My eyes flickered towards a small fragile girl standing alone in the corner. Her tattered, white clothing alongside her pale skin, crinkledwith a lifetime of worry. It all caught my attention. She stood aimlessly out of sight staring at the people who pass by.
‘’ Hurry up Adil! Otherwise we won’t make it!” exclaimed Mike as he rapidly rushed passed me causing me to fall over. Despite this my legs began to move me towards the little girl. I slowly had begun to walk towards her. Her hazel eyes caught mine and for a second our eyes locked. I now noticed the black mascara that had dripped down her face and how her long blonde hair masked over her slim, petite figure. Before I knew it, I was stood before her, her eyes fixed on mine.
“Are you okay?” I stuttered as I tried to think of something to say. She stood silently, awkwardly playing with her long crippled fingers until she whispered
“Please help me get home!” she cried.
“How?” I replied quickly, I realised she had no money, so I anxiously reached into my pocket to help but realised my pockets were empty besides my boxing ticket. Knowing its worth, I realised it could be the help she needs and so I slipped my hand into my back pocket and placed it out. I paused with my decision to pass this over to the little girl as memories flashed into my head of how I raised the money during summer to buy the ticket. I wanted to stop myself but something in my body refused and the ticket just lingered in the air. The girl’s little fingers gently went on to the ticket as it slowly got into her grasp.
As a few minutes passed by, we spoke no words, but then her rosy lips curled into a precious smile that tugged on my heart. Even though my heart filled with disappointed as she slowly walked away with the ticket, I knew I had done the right thing. I stood still like a statue. I was there just watching her walk away clutching onto the ticket as the wind gushed past her, unsettling her long hair. She turned around slowly as she reached the corner of the street and expressed one of her rare smiles. It was that smile that caused the happiness, which overpowered the disappointment in my heart.
