There are many different ways in which individual’s quality of life can be affected by ill-health. In this assignment I will be discussing how cystic fibrosis and obesity affects the health and lifestyle of the person with the illnesses.
What is cystic fibrosis?
Cystic fibrosis is an example of ill health, as it is the UK’s most common, life threatening disorder. It is a genetic disorder that is caused by ‘an inherited disease caused by a faulty gene. In the UK, 2.3 million people carry the faulty gene and when two people that are carriers of the gene, there is a 1 in 4 chance in every pregnancy that their child will be born with cystic fibrosis. This gene controls the movement of salt and water in and out of your cells, so the lungs and digestive system become clogged with mucus, making it hard to breathe and digest food.’ This faulty gene causes a variety of symptoms for the person with the disorder, some of these symptoms include: a persistent cough, poor weight gain and recurring chest and lung infections. The cells most seriously affected are the lung cells, this is because the over production of mucus clogs the airways of the lungs and increases the risk of infection due to the amount of bacteria that can reproduce which may lead to lung and heart failure. Cystic fibrosis is a disorder that is getting more treatable over the years and with newfound technology and medication has meant that ’life expectancy for children born and diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) in 2010 is 37 years for females and 40 years for males’ Lewis, R (2014) however, the age does vary depending on the severity of the symptoms the individual has.
Treating cystic fibrosis
‘There is no cure for cystic fibrosis. The aim of treatment is to ease the symptoms and make the condition easier to live with. It can also prevent or reduce long-term damage caused by infections and other

P3: Describe Current Patterns of Ill-Health and How They Are Monitored

...Describe current patterns of ill-health and how they are monitored There are many different ways in which we could describe health; some people describe health as being without any illness or disease, whereas the World Health Organization would say that health is being physically, mentally and spiritually healthy. The health profile of England is planned for the use of public service professionals and officials working at national, regional and local levels. This document assists people working within the local community who are in a position to apply influence over the planning, commissioning, procurement and delivery of programmes that will support health improvement. http://www.dh.gov.uk/prod_consum_dh/groups/dh_digitalassets/documents/digitalasset/dh_114938.pdf The first Health Profile of England was published in October 2006, then it was update in 2007 and 2008 and now updated for 2009. The Health Profile of England is one of a family of ‘Health Profile’ products. Local and Regional Health Profiles are produced and published by the Association of Public Health Observatories. The reason why these health products are here is because they provide collection of local, regional and national date; which can be used in combination by health planners, in order for them to understand their local health situation. The role of the organisations produces how the reports may be used both nationally and locally. This is because they identify the health needs of the population, develop...

P2- Explain Different Sociological Approaches to Health and Ill Health.

...Health and social care Unit 7- Sociological Perspectives in health and social care P2- Explain different sociological approaches to health and ill health. The functionalist approach: This approaches needs to make sure that everyone in the society has to be healthy in order to work together and functionally. Once an individual is seen as an ill health they are consider as deviance. This is because when an member is ill all of their social role are not produced functionally. There work are left in the middle and the society doesn’t perform society just because an individual is of ill health. If people are ill then new roles and responsibilities come in places for the individual. The sick roles includes an individual to be excuse from normal social obligations. Hence an example will be school, family and work. Parson states that when an individual is ill then they are expected to be looked after there family but this can make individual be dependent on them. Additionally, the individuals need to make sure that they also looked after themselves so that can continue their functions in society. The individual should co operate with medical professions to make themselves better. The functionalist believes that illness happen because of social consequence. When an individual is ill they need to look after themselves so that they can resume their functions in society. This can be negative because the individual is ignoring their social role in society. Research That Has Suggested a Link Between Stress and Ill Health

...Research that has suggested a link between stress and ill health. Looking at the link between stress and illness, there have been many studies done to show the direct effect stress has in relation to illness, the main three pathways looked at are the direct effect, stress interacting with pre-existing vulnerabilities and how stress leads to behavioural changes that are not beneficial to one’s health. However it is hard for researchers to establish a definite cause and effect relationship between stress and specific physical symptoms or illnesses. Not only do people's minds and bodies react differently to stress, but there also are other factors at work when someone falls ill. Most researchers have found the more a person suffers from stress the weaker his or hers immune system becomes. In trying to understand why stress can be bad for the body is to look at it from an evolutionary perspective, where in the past our ancestors were often confronted with life threatening situations and as a result the ‘fight or flight’ response evolved. Whilst being confronted by dangerous situations such as confrontation with a predator it was necessary to send blood to the muscles and be in a heightened state of arousal, however today it might not be relevant to most everyday stressors. So we can say most stressors do not pose a physical danger to us yet the way our nervous and endocrine systems have evolved we react to the stressors as if they did, whilst it might have been an adaptive response...

Health Is Wealth

...Health is wealth. It is a simple phrase but its wisdom and meaning is very immense and deep. It has a number of different interpretations. One possible interpretation of “health is wealth” is that being free from illness and pain has a richness of its own. “Health is wealth” might mean that how a person feels mentally and physically ties to the pursuit of goals and dreams. A good example is someone who wants to be a singer or woodwind musician, because these jobs require a person have strong abdominal muscles and an infection-free respiratory system to breathe well. Actors or sports players also need to be free from sickness because their careers depend on the ability to physically move and interact with others. Even temporary goals, such as going to see the ocean, might not be possible if an individual isn’t feeling good. If a person is chronically ill, he might not be able to hold down a job for long. How a person physically feels can limit his income and assets, so health and wealth are always linked and even can be viewed as being the same. To generate income, one has to work and that cannot be done if he or she is ill and is incompetent to do physical activities. “Health is wealth” is a reminder to take care of oneself. Health is as valued as money. Without it how can one appreciate the beauty of each day and acknowledge the delights that come to even the meekest encounters with family and friends. Health is wealth because without it no one would be able to work productively...

Florence Nightingale Research Paper

...The term holistic can have a plethora of meanings, but is defined in the Journal of Holistic Nursing as an understanding of the larger picture of an individual as opposed to looking at each section (Beck, 2010). For one to function in an optimal way, all aspects of an individual must be cared for instead of just the physical component. Nightingale was one of the first to recognize this and recommend other areas be considered when providing care such as the spiritual, emotional, mental and social aspects of an individual. Not only did Florence Nightingale encourage encompassing care of soldiers but also preventative care as well. Nightingale was one of the first to use health education as an approach to improve upon the general well health of the community????? This is commonly termed in today’s medical model as embracing a holistic community approach to...

...In this section of assignment I will be creating another blog explaining the sociological approaches to health and ill health. This will include different views from Marxist, functionalist and feminist approach. Marxist approach to health and ill health: Marxist believe that the definition of health and ill-health is determined by the bourgeoisie. They also believe that doctors only serve the interest of the ruling/upper class (British medical association). Upper classes have more money and power are able to enjoy a higher standard of health. They also claim that the government in capitalist society allows companies to contribute to ill-health in society. An example of this is tobacco and the alcohol industry. Tobacco companies make huge cancer and other health conditions. Functionalist approach to health and ill-health: Functionalists see ‘ill health’ as a bad thing which is not made for society, therefore if a part or someone is ill in a society then it affects the whole society. Those who are ill are ‘deviant’ from the norms of society. Deviant – Many people who were born with a disability were regarded to as ‘deviant’ and were literally taken out of the society. Functionalists believe that everyone was born as ‘normal’ so if someone was ill or born with an illness were considered as ‘abnormal’ and are going against the norms of society. Those who are ill have a specific role in society called a sick role, the sick role is a term used in medical sociology regarding sickness...

Labour Turnover and Absentism

...meaning that it increased double in 3 years, which is debatable if it’s a good thing or a bad thing. Absenteeism the proportion of employees not at work on a given day. A high rate of absenteeism tends to be an indicator of underlying problems either with the individuals involved or with the business itself. If a person is usally ill on a Monday or on a Friday more regugarly during the year that should be very suspicous for the company this might be just due to illness, hangover from a party at the weekend or on a Friday it might be because of a sporting event. As employers want the workers to work efectively for the company they have to turn up for their work, but if they are ill or don’t turn up the company still have to pay them their loan (even though some employers think this is not fair). The caste study rate of absenteeism in 2005 was 2% and in 2007 it was 3.1% this shows us that people are more often ill this might be due to not enough leisure time as a lot of companies want to keep their workers busy and not to have more workers than they actually need or the workers are just lazy and don’t want to turn up for work. Health and safety absenteeism there...

Promoting Good Health

...oPromoting good health By Maariyah Ismail F912 Principals of health and well being There are many components in order for a service user to stay healthy. A person can stay healthy through many components for example regular exercise; not only keeps you fit, but also increases flexibility, boosts your mood and safeguards your health. A daily walk can help to keep you active and if you walk with friends, it can give your social life a boost. This enables the needs of a service user to be fulfilled however although someone may have a disease it doesn’t mean they are not healthy that are a very able and strong user. For example if a service user has not got a good social life and are very insecure because they are very emotionally unhealthy but has a good physical health this would show they are still not healthy because due to the emotional issues they may not be eating and staying depressed unlike the service user with physical issues. The ‘World Health Organisation’ also known as (WHO) would define health in a different way to other people’s organisations. WHO defined health as ‘a state of complete physical, Mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, in 1948. WHO later updated there definition in 1984’ the extent to which an individual or group is able, on the one hand, to realise aspirations and satisfy need, and on the other hand, to change or cope with the environment.’ WHO’s definition meant health was more than just physically...

Objective Summary

...2013 University of Phoenix Week One Objectives Every person knows that the way in which we live our life affects our health with each choice made. A person’s lifestyle, personal relationships with others, family histories, individual personality, and our mental and biological processes are factors in relation to health psychology. Health is a positive state of physical, mental, and social wellbeing and psychology is the science of behavior and mental process. When combined together, health and psychology covert to the relation between biology, social context, and behavior that influences an individual’s overall health and wellness. To have accurate knowledge of the negative effects that become part of an individual’s emotional mindset, can reduce the risks of becoming ill as a result. People deny the fact or simply do not know about the role of interactivity in this aspect. Physical Health directly connects the environment in which we live to the individual person that is affected. Psychological studies show that a person’s mind and body are linked. As your mental health declines, your physical health can wear down, and if your physical health declines, it can make you feel mentally "down." According to doctors and psychiatrists in the field of study, “keeping a positive outlook on life always helps keeping the inner self healthy. A person’s physical health and psychological well-being depend upon beliefs built up over one’s lifetime relating to areas off biological, psychological...

Family Health

...Family Health and Nursing Practice University of Phoenix NUR 542: Dynamics of Family Systems May 25, 2010 Traditional hospital based nursing care is most often care provided to individual patients. Individual patients, however, are members of a family. Family nursing practice has evolved over the past 20 years as a way to approach and work with families. Effective nursing care ensures that the entire family’s situation, not only the illness of the loved one, is considered (Maijala & Astedt-Kurki, 2009). A goal for family nursing practice in the hospital setting will be to focus on three areas simultaneously; care of the ill patient, the interpersonal aspects of the family and the family as a whole (Eggenberger & Nelms, 2007). This paper will discuss the importance of the family as a system to promote health, define family in a hospital based setting, and identify the family nursing theory applicable to care for the hospitalized patient and family. The Family System and Promotion of Health for its Members The importance of family in the health of our society is directly related to our smallest community of society-the family. “Family transmits society’s demands and values and furthers its preservation” (Burchard, 2005). Family has a goal of meeting the needs of its members and is the main source of information, learning behaviors, thoughts and feelings. Healthy growth and development has been viewed as the most vital role of the family, providing crucial development...
