...Impact of Celebrity Endorsement on a Brand chillibreeze writer — Saurbh Katyal (REF: http://www.chillibreeze.com/articles/Celebrityendorsement.asp accessed on 20 August 2012) "A sign of a celebrity is that his name is often worth more than his services.” - Daniel J Boorstin INTRODUCTION The motif behind total branding may be decocted as an attempt to amalgamate diverse activities to win customer preference. Apropos to this context, the topic “Impact of celebrity endorsement on overall brand”, is a significant one. The crescendo of celebrities endorsing brands has been steadily increasing over the past years. Marketers overtly acknowledge the power of celebrities in influencing consumer-purchasing decisions. It is a ubiquitously accepted fact that celebrity endorsement can bestow special attributes upon a product that it may have lacked otherwise. But everything is not hunky-dory; celebrities are after all mere mortals made of flesh and blood like us. If a celebrity can aggrandize the merits of a brand, he or she can also exacerbate the image of a brand. If I may take the liberty of rephrasing Aristotle’s quote on anger, “Any brand can get a celebrity. That is easy. But getting a celebrity consistent with the right brand, to the right degree, at the right time, for the right purpose and in the right way... that is not easy.” Celebrity endorsements are impelled by virtue of the following motives: Instant Brand Awareness and Recall. Celebrity values define, and refresh the brand...

...Celebrity Advertising: Literature Review and Propositions Peter Yannopoulos* In this paper we review several studies in the area of celebrity advertising. Topics include, why companies use celebrity advertising, achieving the right fit between the brand and the celebrity, the use of athletes as spokespeople, financial considerations of celebrity advertising, and potential risks of celebrity advertising. Next, we develop several propositions and discuss the conclusions and managerial implications of the research. Field of research: Celebrity advertising, Celebrity endorsers, Sponsorship, Celebrity spokespeople 1. Introduction A celebrity endorser is “an individual who is known to the public (actor, sports figure, entertainer, etc) for his or her achievements in areas other than that of the product class endorsed” (Friedman & Friedman 1979). Sponsorship is defined as “providing support for and associating the organization‟s name with events, programs, or even people such as athletes or teams” (Peter & Donnelly 2006). Corporations have chosen both sponsorship and celebrity endorsement as means to increase exposure and brand awareness, as well as reposition their products. The terms celebrity endorsement and sponsorship will be used interchangeably in this report. It has been estimated that about 10% of the dollars spent on television advertising are used in celebrity endorsement advertisements (Agrawal & Kamakura 1995). Because of its importance, it is imperative for managers...

...ENDORSEMENTS: A CRUSIAL AND CONTROVERSIAL PART IN ADVERTISEMENTS When you go for shopping in a supermarket and you come across many brands of various products. When you see a brand, it immediately reminds you of the celebrity who has endorsed or promoted the brand. For instance, Lux may remind you of Shahrukh Khan, Ashwariya Rai or even Katrina Kaif. The image of the celebrity in the ad leaves a lasting impression on your mind which motivates you to buy the product. Endorsements, by famous celebrities, whose personality matches that of the product help to create certain impressions of that brand on consumers. For eg. Bipasha Basu has an image of fitness freak and hence endorses Sugar Free Natura. Endorsements play an important role in making the advertisement successful. Endorsements of celebrity with great persona attracts customer to buy that product. India is a nation where people easily believe what their favorite celebrities say. And when it comes to celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan and Rajnikant, who people idolize and have a great respect for, any endorsement by them will highly influence consumers and their buying behavior. Even Sachin Tendulkar and Shahrukh Khan have a great fan following. Sachin being a famous sports personality do attract kids and youngsters who are sports enthusiast. ...the utilization of celebrity-athletes on endorsements are very much common. Everyone is aware of the fact that numerous athletes are being contacted by various companies to co-present their products; whether it may be a sports or a non-sports brand product or services. But what we do not know is the concept of how much of an impact the celebrity-athlete impact gives to the audience. It is explained in this part the difference between an athlete’s endorsement on sports brand and an athlete’s endorsement on non-sports brand. It is also stated in this chapter the effects of the two, of what is being perceived by consumers and how they are going to respond based on attitude. Athlete endorsement One of the most common approaches to increase sales is the use of athlete endorsers as to continuously remind them of the product (Ruihley, 2010). According to a study, for an endorsement to be effective, the chosen athlete endorser must be amid the leading performers of his or her career and must seem to have a reliable attitude to the purchasers. (Ruihley, 2010). In a consumer’s point of view, in promotions, it is more engaging and consistent when a celebrity is being used as the endorser; as this forms brand image. (Sertoglu, 2014) But still, efficiency of the celebrity may vary on the type of product being endorsed (Kamins, 1990; Solomon 2007) Sturdier purchase intentions resulted by the use of celebrity to endorse (Upadhyay, 2010) Stereotypically, celebrities, who are considered...

...Celebrity Endorsements According to David Lamoureux, the average consumer sees 3000 to 20000 forms of advertisement a day (2004). One of the most frequent and successful forms of advertisement in this day and age is the use of celebrity endorsement (Gnanapragash, et al, 2004). Celebrity endorsement is the use of famous individuals who demand a high level of respect, trust, recognition and awareness globally or nationally. Such people lend their name and image to promote a product or service (Elberse, Anita, and Jeroen Verleun, 2012). Although the literature covers many theories as to why we use celebrity endorsements, this review will focus on three main themes which are constantly mentioned in the literature. These themes are: Determinants of Celebrity endorsement, reasons for increased usage of celebrity endorsements, advantages and disadvantages of this approach as a brand building strategy. The paper will primarily focus on endorsements as a brand building strategy even though the literature presents these themes in a variety of context. 2. Determinants of Celebrity Endorsement A celebrity endorser is “an individual who enjoys public recognition and who uses this recognition on behalf of a consumer good by appearing with it in an advertisement” (McCracken, 1989, page 310). Friedman and Friedman state that “a celebrity endorser is an individual who is known to the public for his or her achievement in areas others than of the product class endorsed” (Friedman...

...A Study on How Celebrity Endorsers of Bench and Penshoppe Affect the Buying Behavior of Assumption Communication Students A Thesis Presented to The Department of Communication Assumption College In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement For the Degree of Bachelor of Communication Major in Advertising Stephanie Rae D. Galeos Rameya Christelle C. Ramoso February 18, 2013 Chapter 1 The Problem and the Review of Related Literature Background of the Study Advertising is predominant to everyone. People are bombarded with advertisements. They rely on it; it makes their lives easier. Easier because they can get information from all the types of advertisements they see and hear everyday – print, billboards, online, television, radio, etc. Advertising can be perceived as an answer to one’s needs (basic and daily necessities) and wants (what they buy, but they do not need). Each of us is different, so we all have our perceptions toward a brand/product or other advertisements we see or hear. However, companies still look for the real reason why consumers buy, what they buy, and when they buy. This is because it will help them know what brand/product or service to offer in order to satisfy them, and possibly maybe, let them become loyal buyers/users. Consumers buy as they aim to satisfy their needs and wants. Consumer needs are their basic and daily necessities, while wants are the things they buy, but they do not really need, those which will improve/enhance...

...does celebrity endorsements influence consumer behavior in fast fashion industry? 1. Introduction The fashion industry has come a long way over the past two decades. In the early years, big players such as Marks & Spencer offered a relatively straightforward fashion retail choice. However, with the lower cost of starting a retail outlet, the market has become more crowded since then. So called fast fashion retailers, are by no means the only one who succeeded and grew over the past years. Overall, the fast fashion retailers experienced a greater growth compared to the fashion industry as a whole (Cachon and Swinney, 2011). Such retailers are now ubiquitous and spotting a person on the streets who does not wear at least one fast fashion clothing item is rare. The key point to success lies in their business model; making the trends available to everyone. The rapid global changes have restructured the way fashion retailers do business. In today’s competitive market, using celebrity endorser to promote brands on television is a fairly common practice (Erdogan et al. 2001). Celebrity endorsements is believed to help consumers remember the message of the advertisement and the brand name the celebrity is endorsing. This creates the personality of a brand because when a celebrity is paired with a brand, this image helps shape the image of that brand in the minds of consumers (Argrawal & Kamakura, 1995). Celebrity endorsement is a new strategy in brand selling...
