...Claudio H December 3rd, 2013 Professor Patten ENGS013 – Intro to Fiction Greasy Trenches Who, what, when, where, and why? We find ourselves asking these questions, constantly pondering life, piecing together the puzzle of our experiences, which in part allows us to remember the answers. Our association with “where” an experience happened or took place is often the best wake-up call. If one is able to recall the setting, one can usually evoke the whole experience. In “Greasy Lake,” by T. C. Boyle and “The Things They Carried,” by Tim O’Brien, we learn just how monumental the setting of an experience can be, especially in a short story. Drawing comparisons between each story will allow the reader to delve even deeper into the importance of setting. Now it is obvious that a story that revolves around a lake that adolescents ravage and the jungles of Vietnam in the heat of the war are nowhere near similar, but they are. Boyle and O’Brien both create magnificent settings, but they differ in the techniques they use to tell their remarkable stories. Both stories rely heavily on setting and we look to the development of characters in those settings and the influence of setting on plot, to illustrate the differences and similarities between the two, which in the end exemplify brilliant short stories. Although traumatic, amputation saved thousands of lives as it often prevented infection. • Trench Foot, a condition induced by standing in water for long periods of time was common among soldiers and would typically cause the flesh of the foot to decay and die. • Infection was a serious complication for the wounded. Doctors used numerous techniques to prevent this from occurring. • In addition to wounds, many soldiers became ill. Weakened immune systems meant that many men were in hospital for sickness, not wounds • Wounding also became a way for men to avoid the danger and horror of the trenches. Doctors were extremely strict against ‘malingering’, where soldiers pretended to be ill or wounded themselves so that they did not have to fight. Wounds on the left hand were also seen as suspicious. • Wounding was not always physical. Thousands of men suffered emotional trauma from their experience on the battlefield. Army doctors and surgeons had to get to the wounded without risking their own lives. This led to a set, organized plan being introduced on the battlefield. This journey would have been familiar to many wounded soldiers. Casualties were collected by stretcher-bearers and moved by a combination of people, horse and cart, and later on by motorized ambulance. Design/methodology/approach – The first phase was a survey on a sample of 272 BPO/ITES employees, using Gallup q12 or Gallup Workplace Audit. Focus group interview discussion was based on reasons for attrition and the unique problems of employee engagement. In the second phase, one of the BPO organizations from the phase I sample was chosen at random and exit interview data was analyzed using factor analysis and content analysis. Findings – The results were in the expected direction and fulfilled the research aims of the current study. In the first phase low factor loadings indicated low engagement scores at the beginning of the career and at completion of 16 months with the organization. High factor loadings at intermediate stages of employment were indicative of high engagement levels, but the interview data reflected that this may mean high loyalty, but only for a limited time.
