...When presenting a speech, many tend to forget the importance of delivery. Both delivery and context play a significant role in speech making. Small changes to the way one delivers a speech can alter the outcome of its listeners. I am an extemporaneous speaker because I am able to present the major ideas of my speech without having to memorize the exact words. Although I find my method to be effective and useful, there is room for improvement. I find my major flaws to be eye contact, tone in voice and facial expressions. When making a speech, I feel comfortable and prepared when it is in front of me. However, I then start to rely on my paper and constantly glance down to assure that I am reciting it correctly. I also forget to change the pitch of my voice when expressing different thoughts. I am focused on trying to remember the information that I disregard my tone, which results in boredom for the listeners. Lastly, my facial expressions can be improved. I am a very expressive person therefore I express my emotions through my facial expressions. When I stubble or mispronounce a word, I get nervous and wonder whether or not the audience caught my mistake. At that moment, my face expressions show my discomfort to the audience. These speechmaking flaws are a result of my fear in public speaking. Throughout my school years, I have always dreaded the idea of presentations. I was never satisfied with my performance as I made several mistakes because I was nervous. I decided...

I believe that the ability to articulate is essential to inner harmony, to emotional maturity, and to mental balance. If all people could be completely articulate at all times, human relations might improve to the point where there would be no more wars and no more jails, more stable homes and more happy people. I believe that speech is essential to the growth of the human personality and that it provides a way for self-discovery and self-renewal. For many, it is a way of self-expression without brush or pen. I believe that the act of speech is a total process, that when it reaches optimum effectiveness, the whole man communicates. What one is, is always part of what one says. I believe that there is no substitute for content in the speaking process. Material or intellectual worth provides the essence of eloquence. Speech skills have their importance, but they no more make speech than clothes make the man. The center of gravity in all speech communications is thought and idea. ...“About a Boy” 1. Does “Mamau” have any symptoms of a psychiatric disorder, mood, personality, schizophrenia, etc.? “Mamau” has a factitious disorder which is a “mental disorder in which the symptoms of physical or mental illness are deliberately induced or simulated with no apparent incentive.” (p. 127) More specifically, she has Munchausen syndrome by proxy. This is normally when an adult caretaker produces or lies about illness in another person under his or her care. One example is when “Mamau” claims Robert kicked her and gave her bruises in a fit of rage. In a session with his therapist, Dr. Fee, Robert does not remember doing anything like that; however, his grandmother says it is because the drugs have blanked his memory. Another example is “Mamau” constantly tells Robert that he can be taken away because of his mental problem. “Mamau” has symptoms of histrionic personality disorder. It is characterized by “self-dramatization, exaggerated expression of emotions, and attention seeking behaviors.” (p. 173) She also has characteristics of narcissistic personality disorder. These people have “an exaggerated sense of self importance, an exploitative attitude, and a lack of empathy.” (p. 174) We can use the above example to support for these. There was also a part where “Mamau” calls up the hospital to see if the person treating her daughter had a doctorate. She didn’t trust the doctors and it showed that she was trying to over power her daughter. There is another scene...

...Abstract "Personality has been defined as an individual's characteristic patterns of thought, emotion, and behavior, together with the psychological mechanisms--hidden or not--behind those patterns.” (Funder, D. C. (2001). The personality puzzle. (2nd Ed.) New York: Norton). Relationship between Personality Types and Health Almost every day we describe and assess the personalities of the people around us. In my daily job, as a massage therapist, I meet people on a more personal level and tend to focus more on individuals. Instead, psychologists use the conceptions of personality that can apply to everyone. Personality research has led to the development of a number of theories that help explain how and why certain personality traits develop. There are many different theories of personality; the first step is to understand exactly what is meant by the term personality. A brief definition would be that personality is made up of the characteristic patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviors that make a person unique. In addition to this, personality arises from within the individual and remains fairly consistent throughout life. Some of the fundamental characteristics of personality include: * Consistency- Essentially, people act in the same ways or similar ways in a variety of situations. * Psychological and physiological - Personality is a psychological construct, but research suggests that it is also influenced by biological processes...

...Have you ever felt a personal connection to a character? An author counts on that when assigning traits to a given character. In A Sound of Thunder, Ray Bradbury, the author, makes Eckels, the main character, believable through the character's speech, his actions, and the reactions of others. Through Eckels' speech, we learn a lot about him. For example, when Travis is trying to explain the effects of killing a mouse, Eckels replies “So what if they're dead?”. This lead to Travis going more in depth with his explanation. This shows me that Eckels doesn't think about the facts in front of him, nor does he think of how his actions affect people. He didn't think about how killing a mouse in the past could have repercussions in the future. My...

...Operant conditioning Psychopathology- the study of abnormal behaviour Biological functions such as eating, drinking and sleeping are regulated by… • Homeostasis: steady state of equilibrium within bodily systems. A system is returned to a resting level through motivational states that energise and direct homeostasis-restoring behaviours. ! • Thus, homeostatic systems include several features: 1. Set Point: biologically optimal level the system strives to maintain. 2. Feedback mechanisms: provide information regarding the state of the system with respect to variables being regulated. 3. Corrective mechanisms: restore the system to its set point when needed. Physiological needs describe a deficient biological condition. Occur with tissue and bloodstream deficits, as from water loss, nutrient deprivation or physical injury. ➡ If water loss occurs below an optimal homeostatic level (around 2%) this creates the physiological need that underlies thirst. defined as • THIRST iswater deficit.a consciously experienced motivational state (drive) that readies the body to perform behaviours needed to replenish ➡ So drive is a psychological (not biological) term. ...Importance of Understanding Different Personality Types in the Workplace It is not surprising that the concept of personality has been a popular topic throughout the history of organizational behavior studies. Personalities make some people stand out from the others and make some people seem very ordinary. It may have different effects on people’s lives, but there is no doubt that it influences individuals’ both social and work lives either way. Therefore, it is very important to recognize and know different personality types in the workplace especially if you are a manager. A manager’s job in a workplace includes many tasks. First of all, they have to keep the highest possible work efficiency. If a manager does not know about different personalities and their traits, he could make wrong decisions that could influence work efficiency negatively. For instance, if you put a shy, yet, perfectionist person in a team work that would require a lot of socializing, then that person may not give his best work. Or if you choose someone, who does not have leadership skills, as the leader of the group you would encounter some problems. Secondly, managers have to inspire workers. It is not easy to influence someone positively. A manager has to know what type of personalities his workers have to be able to affect them. If he tries to deliver a somewhat romantic and idealistic speech to a rather realistic worker, he will not have any kind of influence on that person. Therefore, managers must...

...Do you agree with the view that the Sino Soviet Split was caused primarily by the political rivalry of Khrushchev and Mao? The Sino Soviet split occurred largely due to the ideological issues that Mao and Khrushchev had, having vastly opposite ideas on the nature of Revolutions. However, through this you largely see the clash of their personalities and how they differed vastly seen through the Soviet speech in which Khrushchev seriously offended Mao by announcing de-Stalinisation. National security was the basis of much strain as neither country felt safe mainly due to the advancement of nuclear weapons. Both countries had many attempts in order to gain stability ahead of the other such as the Korean War, where the USSR forced Mao to pay a large sum of money in order to pay back the USSR for its aid. However, this caused further rifts in the relationship. Due to the shared border of China and the USSR, territorial disputes were not unheard of however, throughout the Cold War, this became a larger issue as each wanted to assert more power. Although relations with the US was a factor involved in the split, it did little but cause tension and demonstrate the further rift that was happening between the two countries through the various meetings with presidents. Ideological differences were pivotal in the breakdown of Sino-Soviet relations as they marked a significant flaw in the relationship; this was mainly due to their idea of the Nature of a Revolution. The Soviets believed in...

This was the opening statement of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s address to the nation the day after Japan invaded American territory. Following the Pearl Harbor attacks, Roosevelt gave a powerful speech that was a call to arms and in his speech he expressed outrage towards Japan and confidence in the job of our armed forces. The speech was a request to declare war against Japan and to bring the United States into World War II. His use of rhetorical techniques effectively aided in grasping the attention of his audience and reminded the...
