In Time (Movie Review)

In Time, released on 2011, is a science fiction film directed by Andrew Niccol, starring Amanda Seyfried, Justin Timberlake and Cillian Murphy. This movie has an interesting and creative concept that is still relevant today. It conjures up a future where time is money and money is time. Benjamin Franklin’s infamous quote literally turned into a currency. Everyone is born with a luminous digital clock etched on their forearm and they are genetically engineered to stop aging by the time they reach twenty-five. At that point in time, everyone has one year left to live and their clock starts counting down. Because of this, you must work to acquire more time to live. If you have thousands, even millions of years stored in your clock, you’re considered rich. On the other hand, the poor people who have little time in their hands, strive each day in order to survive. In some cases, others steal time. By simply clasping your hand with another person, you could easily transfuse or share minutes or years of your clock. When your time runs out and your watch ticks down to zero, you’ll basically die. Will Salas, played by Justin Timberlake, was a ghetto-dweller until he met a rich man named Henry Hamilton. Henry Hamilton was weary and despairing for he had already lived for more than a hundred years and so he endowed Will with over a century of his time, leaving only seconds for himself. Having so much time opened a lot of opportunities for Will. He travelled to another time zone and there he met Sylvia Weis (Amanda Seyfried), daughter of one of the wealthiest man alive. However, a time keeper (Cillian Murphy), searches for Will, suspecting he was responsible for Hamilton’s death.
The premise of this film is fascinating and provocative. Would you rather use your time for a phone call or for a breakfast meal? It renders you to muse on how to live your life and spend your time. However, the movie was disappointing because this brilliant and refreshingly unique concept wasn’t used effectively. Andrew Niccol could’ve furtherly elaborated the ideas he presented in the movie instead of just putting them out without any profound explanation. Additionally, there were a lot of plot holes and unanswered questions. In brief, the characters, concept and plot weren’t fully and well developed. It may pique your interest and entertain you but it may not satisfy you. Nonetheless, In Time is a good movie despite its flaws. Moreover, it teaches you to appreciate every second of every day and to live like there’s no tomorrow.

Movie Review - Hard Times

...The most impressive aspect of the film Hard Times is its ability to accurately paint the divide between the upper and middle class during the industrial revolution without explicitly doing so. According to depictions in the film, working and living in an industrialized city was less than desirable. It was a time of poor work conditions, unfair wages, and unequal rights for women. It never explicitly addresses the poor work conditions in the film, but it’s evident they exist when the “hands” turn to the smooth talking union spokesman Slackbridge to attempt to unionize. The low wages is evident for both men and women at two different parts during the film. In the first part of the film, Louisa is forced to marry Josiah Bounderby because as her father puts it, “he has a substantially higher income then she’ll ever be able to earn.” Also, a worker in the factory named Stephen falls in love with a girl named Rachael, but is unable to obtain a divorce from his estranged wife because only the wealthy can afford them. It’s also evident from the film that life in early-industrialized cities was a time of unequal rights for woman. The women were subject to their man’s authority and wishes throughout the film. An example of this is where Bounderby, upset when he finds out that Louisa doesn’t love him, goes on a huge rant to Louisa’s father about how he can’t let her go because it would ruin his reputation and Louisa doesn’t appreciate him or all he’s done for her. Based on my interpretation...

A Study of Online Film Reviews’ Reliability and Watching Film’s Intention

...A Study of Online Film Reviews’ Reliability and Watching Film’s Intention INTRODUCTION Today myriads of people search for information online rather than non-internet channels. According to the statistics reported by clickz.com (2005), the quantity of netizens has reached nine million in Taiwan. They make use of the internet to gain knowledge and search for information. Moreover, they also take advantage of the internet to browse the film reviews on film reviews’ websites. Among those netizens, a part of group is made up by college students. However, the deficient reliability of websites was found by college students. What exactly college students would have that thought in mind was the research purpose. As the computer technology grows rapidly, people are bombarded by a large reservoir of information which offers the marketers a challenge because “… as consumers adopt new technologies, their behaviors change” (Zinkhan, 1998). When college students want to see a movie, they check the online review website before they really go to that movie. Yet some of online comments are not matched to the reality. Because the comments on the film review website said the movie was good, the college students didn’t like the “good movie” which was commented on the website. Because of this situation, some people trust the comments on online film review but some do not. Within the extensive literature on the influence of online film review, little research has been done on...

The Critics Corner

...Ebert a prolific movie critic, had this to say about “Citizen Kane,” “Citizen Kane” is more than a great movie; it is a gathering of all the lessons of the emerging era of sound, just as “Birth of a Nation” assembled everything learned at the summit of the silent era, and “2001” pointed the way beyond narrative (Ebert, 1998).” I most certainly agree with Mr. Ebert on this movie does begin to break into the categories not yet truly explored in movies sound and special effects. However being a child and growing up in the age of “Star Wars” and most recently “Avatar” I found myself losing interest quickly. “For the first time in the American cinema, the very process of telling a story on film became every bit as tricky and exhilarating as the story itself”, said columnist Owen Gleiberman. (Gleiberman, 1991) Certainly agree with the columnist here the story itself although to me took a moment to unfold at the end became a lot more plain for the viewers. Citizen Kane proved to be a slightly difficult movie to watch not because the acting was horrible or the movie production was awful but more because it was not what I was accustomed to. The movie started a little slow with the introduction of the main character in what almost seemed like a very early slide show. The takeaway from the movie as opposed to what Mr. Ebert stated in his review I believe is to see how far we have come as a movie going and producing society. The movie was a masterpiece of its time however without the...

Animal Angst: Movie Analysis

...came across a movie review titled “At the Movies; Animal Angst; This filmmaker constructs tales in spiky shells” by Los Angeles Times reporter Mark Olsen. The article title caught my attention due to the same assumption of “Animal Angst” that I received based on the title of the movie. The movie review that I read was simple and comparable to how I take notes to cover the basic grounds of a subject. Olsen mentions the movie being “cerebral and emotional, an abstracted allegory on power, love, and the power of love” yet by reading his critic, the choice of emotions described were not presented as strongly. Although his lack...

...The Boy in the Striped Pajamas was a failure of a movie. Despite its great storyline it did poorly at the box office. It was not nominated for any important awards in the U.S. The movie also received many negative awards. First reason why The Boy in the Striped Pajamas was a failed movie was how terrible it did at the box office. The movie had a budget of 12,500,000.00 dollars (IMDB). Not only did the movie not make enough money for a profit, it didn’t even what they spent on making it. The total domestic income that the movie brought in was 9,046,156 dollars (Boxofficemojo). The movie reviews and ratings are real-time as the reviews are by the movie viewers. There is something unique in ratings called Flickometer. This tells you the actual critic reviews, awards won by the movie, etc. In short it helps you to decide the best movie to watch. What is much loved about this site is its simplicity and the content provided. There are different categories which cater to all, such as movies, celebrities, photos, videos, games, news and blog. As a registered user you can even write a blog on related topics. It is user friendly and provides just the information required. There is nothing complicated about it. There are categories like widgets and advertising as well. So if you own a blog or a website you can add doctorflix.com as a widget on the same. As per my research, there are about 30 or more similar websites in this category, but this wins over in simplicity and information provided. Other websites offer other features like movies and songs download, wallpapers, etc. which is very common. Doctorflix in return concentrates more on the reviews, ratings and the blog which differentiates it positively from others. Pros:- 1. Simplicity of content 2. User friendly 3. True Grit Movie Review

...MOVIE REVIEW: TRUE GRIT 1 Movie Review: True Grit The movie I chose to review is the 2010 remake of “True Grit.” This movie stars Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Hailee Steinfeld as the main characters. Jeff Bridges plays Rooster Cogburn, Matt Damon plays LaBoeuf and Hailee Steinfeld plays Mattie Ross, Josh Brolin portrays Tom Chaney, the man who murdered Mattie’s father. In the following paragraphs of this paper the following will be discussed: when it was produced, the basic plot line, the themes address regarding the West, the accuracy and portrayal of the characters in relation to the West, the time period and historical setting, and lastly the usefulness of this movie for someone who is interested in the history of the American West. When Produced Ethan and Joel Coen (also known as ‘The Coen Brothers’) directed as well as produced the 2010 adaptation. Steven Spielberg was one of the executive producers. Since this version of “True Grit” was produced in 2010 it is written from a twenty-first century perspective. Although produced so recently, the film was based in 1880 which gives it a one hundred and thirty year gap in time. This tells one that the film had many modern influences. Basic Plot The movie opens with Proverbs 28:1a displayed on the screen, it reads, “The wicked flee when none pursueth.” A song that sounds like the hymn “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms” is gently being played on the piano. It is called “The Wicked Flee” and is...

Catch Me If You Can

...lawyer all before turning the age of twenty-one. Well believe it or not; this became a reality for Frank Abagnale Jr. as he infiltrated the system in the 1960’s. The Steven Spielberg directed movie “Catch Me if You Can” brings out this true story, in which a sixteen year old runaway Frank Abagnale Jr. (played by Leonardo Dicaprio) began his “brilliant three year run as a master of deception” (Hollywood.com). In this three year stint, he also forges over a million dollars of fake checks across the country, creates several aliases for himself, and manages to become the youngest person on the FBI’s Most Wanted list. Carl Hanratty, an FBI Bank Fraud Agent (played by Tom Hanks) engages with Abagnale Jr. in what Starpulse.com calls a “a highly enjoyable cat-and–mouse escapade.” After Frank Abagnale Jr. was eventually caught, Carl Hanratty realized that Abagnale’s check-savviness could be a benefit to his department in the FBI. He later went on to have a successful career as an FBI Agent in Check Fraud, instead of facing a timely prison sentence. The movie flows well due to a plethora of acting skills, well-written dialogue, and an entertaining back and forth battle that Abagnale Jr. encounters with Hanratty and also within himself. “Catch Me’s acting shines,” Hollywood.com raves. The movie contains a respectable and veteran class of Hollywood talent with Leonardo Dicaprio, Christopher Walken, and Tom Hanks leading the way. The intriguing mixtures of the actors’ personalities go...

Analysis: X-Men (2000)

...life events and issues. The first X-Men film is no exception to this. X-Men was directed by Bryan Singer and released in 2000. In the movie, a world is depicted in which a small portion of people are mutants. These mutants each possess different superhuman powers which in turn makes them feared and distrusted by normal humans. This film is about the struggle between two groups of mutants, trying to bring about acceptance for their community. The main villain, Magneto, wants to bring about acceptance through violence, while the protagonist of this film wants to do it through a more peaceful route. X-Men is an accurate, smart comic-book adaptation that follows its source material for real relevance and deeper meaning, for example its tie to actual life history, while still delivering all the action a comic book fan could want. Marvel Comics initially released Stan Lee’s first X-Men series in 1963, meaning the cherished characters were around a great time before the film adaptation was made and the effects that were used to make this movie made the stories come alive. As a result, the majority of this movie’s audience grew up reading the comic books that this movie was based off of. This lead to fans having high expectations for this movie and both the knowledgeable fans and those who had never read them were not disappointed. The fact that the movie was able to appeal to all members of the audience is what made it a hit. One critic from the IGN Entertainment says, “While Singer...

Ms. Redare

...Now that you have selected the movie you want to review and watched it bearing in mind the evaluative criteria listed above, you are ready to begin writing your review. 1.Format Your review should have a title page specifying the title of the movie you are reviewing, your name, the names of your instructor and class, your student ID number, and the date you are submitting the review. The title page should be followed by the body of the review, which should be about 750 words long – about three double-spaced pages using a 12-point font. If you cite any sources, the full citations should appear in a separate References section at the end. Use the standard Chicago citation style (see http://library.osu.edu/sites/guides/chicagogd.php). 2.Story, Dialogue, Action! Movies tell stories, and so should your review. Dialogue and action bring stories to life, and you can increase your readers’ interest by quoting revealing snippets of dialogue and describing the action that takes place during important scenes. These narrative elements are especially effective when used in the introductory paragraphs because they help to engage the reader. Remember, though, that your job is not to tell the whole story of the movie but to focus on aspects of sociological relevance. Don’t let the movie’s narrative control you; use the movie to tell your sociological story. 3.Argument The main body of your review – all but the introductory and concluding paragraphs – should develop your sociological...

...tears. The screenplay for the 1994 movie was written by Eric Roth, based on the novel by Winston Groom. The story follows Forrest through 30 years of trials and tribulations, placing Forrest within historical moments of history, and in pursuit of his one dream–his “most special friend,” Jenny. According to the Washington Post, Forrest Gump won Oscar awards for Best Picture, Best Actor (Hanks), Best Director (Robert Zemeckis), Film Editing, Visual Effects and Adapted Screenplay. The movie was well deserving of these awards since the acting and the visual effects were extraordinary. The films’ actors success in portraying their characters is a major factor in the film’s awards. Tom Hanks and Robin Wright worked well together, just like “peas and carrots.” The on-screen chemistry between the two was phenomenal. I felt a real connection between the two, finding myself mad at Jenny when she blew Forrest off and in tears when he told her that he was heading to Vietnam. Mokui’s Movie Review states “Tom Hanks IS Forrest Gump…He breathes life into the guy and you will feel what Forrest feels” (1994, par 1). James Berardinelli states, “Robin Wright gives the best performance of her career, surpassing what she accomplished in The Playboys” (1994, par2). Another performance that stands out is that of Gary Sinise. Sinise plays the part of Lieutenant Dan Taylor, whose life is saved by Forrest during the Vietnam War. James Berardinelli writes, “In this movie, his Lieutenant Dan Taylor is riveting”...
