Getting the right data, information to the right providers at the right time using the right procedure can improve the healthcare industry in many ways. The consequence of not doing so can cause many barriers along the way. The barriers include loss of productivity, inadequate proof of benefit, integration issues just to name a few. There will be a brief summary on how data convert into information and convert information into knowledge, and explain the difference in between the three. Reading, are textbook, the informatics pyramid illustrates the relationship between data and information and how they can be transformed into the creation of knowledge.

Over the years and still now working in an hospital setting, I was able to apply data in my every day routine working as a unit clerk, and known as a medical coder, I would electronically enter data into the computer, scan documents or provide non electric data for doctors to view. After collecting the data, I was able to utilize the information portion of the information hierarchy, by the facts from the data that was provided from the provider. As a coder, I would read the diagnosis and code the diagnosis using ICD-9 codes and enter the codes into what is known as electronic health record systems (EHR) for other providers to use for their purposes. Knowledge and wisdom come from understand and knowing information that it needed to move forward. I have to say, my schooling in nursing, science, and healthcare administration and working in the healthcare industry, benefit me know and understand the truth behind healthcare. I was able to have more of a hands on experience than others. So, I was able to relate and comprehend the information that I had to code into the EHR or healthcare systems.
