What is an insider threat? An insider threat is a malicious threat to an organization that comes from people within the organization itself. These people can be employees, former employees, contractors or business associates. This threat is most often used to steal property or information for personal gain, or to benefit another organization or country. The reason this threat is so serious is because it comes from people who have inside information concerning security practices, data and computer systems. Insiders can easily access critical security information because they have legitimate accounts and permissions to do so. Because they have easy access insiders are often familiar with the data and property as well as methods used to protect them. Insider threats are harder to defend against than attacks from the outside because they are in the building already, often with direct access to the organization's internal network. …show more content…

Because Manning had access to classified databases he began to collect information that included thousands of war logs about the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, private cables from the State Department and assessments of Guantánamo prisoners. In 2010 Manning decided to give all the stolen information to WikiLeaks which began an extreme breach of security. This information eventually founds its way into the hands of al-Qaeda. Manning had a mental illness called gender dysphoria. Because of the illness he was treated differently by his peers. This can be directly correlated to the reason behind him stealing classified documents and releasing them to Wikileaks. And because of his insider attack he helped terrorist groups obtain documents of military
