INTRODUCTION This assessment is going to identify and analyze interpersonal communication skills and behavior exhibited and observed in a movie titled Twilight, a 2008 American romantic fantasy film based on Stephanie Meyers popular novel of the same name.

Interpersonal Communication Communication is not an easy process. It involves verbal and non-verbal attempts to assist the other person to understand what we are trying to communicate. Yet it often fails. Communication occurs every day in our lives and it happens in every situation. All our daily activities require us to communicate in one form or the other. It is important to communicate in order to pass on information to people that we interact with. Communication is any action, verbal and nonverbal, which is conveyed by a person and received and understood by at least one other person. These actions or behaviors can be ideas, feelings, values and attitudes. When the receiver perceives the message, a meaning is obtained from the message. A relationship is formed between people as they engage themselves in a communication process.
Communication can take place with or without words. Our communication output is composed of verbal, vocal and visual signs or signals. Verbal signals are words or speech that we speak. Vocal signals are the characteristics of our voice when we speak for example the tone, the volume or the speed of our speech and visual signals are all those actions that the receiver sees. CharacTeristics of Effective Interpersonal communication Effective communication helps us better understand a person or situation and enables us to resolve differences, build trust and respect, and create environments where creative ideas, problem solving, affection, and caring can flourish. By learning these effective communication skills, you can better connect with your spouse, kids, friends, and coworkers. 1. It is a Transactional process. i.e. its of circular nature.
2. The elements in Interpersonal communication are interdependent.
3. Participants act and react as whole, i.e. person's body, mind and soul, all are involved.
4. Interpersonal communication is Inevitable, Irreversible and Unrepeatable.
5. Interpersonal communication is a process of ongoing adjustments.
6. Relationships in Interpersonal communication can be supplementary or complementary.
7. In Interpersonal communication people interact with each other on the basis of psychological uniqueness and explanatory knowledge of each other. Because interpersonal communication is the primary means by which we get to know others as unique individuals, it is important to understand the role of self-disclosure. Self-disclosure is the process of revealing information about yourself to others that is not readily known by them—you have to disclose it. In face-to-face interactions, In the movie,After Bella and Edward are drawn together, he discloses to her that he was a vampire and showed her things he could do,these are pieces of personal information she and some other people in the movie did not know. Given that our definition of interpersonal communication requires people to “build knowledge of one another” to get to know them as unique individuals, the necessity for self-disclosure should be obvious. There are degrees of self-disclosure, ranging from relatively safe (revealing your hobbies or musical preferences), to more personal topics (illuminating fears, dreams for the future, or fantasies). Typically, as relationships deepen and trust is established, self-disclosure increases in both breadth and depth. We tend to disclose facts about ourselves first (I am a Biology major), then move towards opinions (I feel the war is wrong), and finally disclose feelings (I’m sad that you said that). An important aspect of self-disclosure is the rule of reciprocity. This rule states that self-disclosure between two people works best in a back and forth fashion. When you tell someone something personal, you probably expect them to do the same. When one person reveals more than another, there can be an imbalance in the relationship because the one who self discloses more may feel vulnerable as a result of sharing personal information while the other person has not. Both Jourard (1968,1971a,1971b) and Mowrer (1964,1968a, 1968b,1973a,1973b) offer extensive discussion, based on both theory and research indicating that people who cannot reveal themselves appropriately run the risk of impoverished interpersonal lives and a wide variety of neurotic disorders. Although their findings are not definitive,they are stimulating and should not be ignored by anyone interested in his or her own interpersonal growth
Concept
The film focused on Seventeen-year-old Bella Swan moves to Forks, a small town near the Washington coast, to live with her father, Charlie, after her mother is remarried to a minor league baseball player. She is quickly befriended by many students at her new high school, but she is intrigued by the mysterious and aloof Cullen siblings. Bella sits next to Edward Cullen in biology class on her first day of school; he appears to be disgusted by her, much to Bella's confusion. A few days later, Bella is nearly struck by a van in the school parking lot. Edward inexplicably moves from several feet away and stops the vehicle with his hand without any harm to himself or Bella. He later refuses to explain this act to Bella and warns her against befriending him. After much research, Bella eventually discovers that Edward is a vampire, though he only consumes animal blood. The pair fall in love and Edward introduces Bella to his vampire family, Carlise, Esmeralda, Alice,Jasper, Emmett and Rosalie. Soon after, three nomadic vampires James, Victoria and Laurent arrive. James, a tracker vampire, is intrigued by Edward's protectiveness over a human and wants to hunt Bella for sport. Edward and his family risk their lives to protect her, but James tracks Bella to Phoenix where she is hiding and lures her into a trap by claiming he is holding her mother hostage. James attacks Bella and bites her wrist, but Edward, along with the other Cullen family members, arrives before he can kill her. James is destroyed, and Edward sucks James's venom from Bella's wrist, preventing her from becoming a vampire. A severely injured Bella is taken to a hospital. Upon returning to Forks, Bella and Edward attend their school prom. While there, Bella expresses her desire to become a vampire, which Edward refuses to grant. The film ends with Victoria secretly watching the pair dancing, plotting revenge for her lover James's death. Process Involved In Active Listening Active listening, this involves listening with all senses. As well as giving full attention to the speaker, in a relationship it is important that the ‘active listener’ is also ‘seen’ to be listening - otherwise the speaker may conclude that what they are talking about is uninteresting to the listener. Interest can be conveyed to the speaker by using both verbal and non-verbal messages such as maintaining eye contact, nodding your head and smiling, agreeing by saying ‘Yes’ or simply ‘Mmm hmm’ to encourage them to continue. By providing this 'feedback' the person speaking will usually feel more at ease and therefore communicate more easily, openly and honestly. Listening is the most fundamental component of interpersonal communication. During Twilight" Edward's conflicted about bringing Bella into his world he tells Bella "I'm the world's most dangerous predator. Everything about me invites you in. My voice, my face, even my smell. As if I would need any of that. As if you could outrun me. As if you could fight me off. I'm designed to kill." - Edward. Bella who listens attentively staring into his eyes, still wants to be with him even after all said, showing him how much she truly loved him.

Perception
The way a person may interpret or understand a message vary from one person to the other. These may be influenced by life experiences, feelings or expectations. For example Bella had no problem with Edward been a vampire she lived him still but others including Edward himself did not at a point as he felt he could hurt her. Poor listening skill is also a barrier as it can lead to misunderstanding and incorrect perception

Conclusion Since the world is so incredibly diverse and communications come in such a wide variety of forms, it is important to know many appropriate and helpful interpersonal skills. By practicing the few suggestions found here, you will find yourself understanding more of what people say and repeating yourself less to other people. Your co-workers and friends will have the confidence to come to you when they find themselves in need. Remember, great communication skills take practice. Do not give up on Day One. Your ability to express yourself will grow almost daily as long as you apply yourself in improving communication skills.
