...INRERVIEW REPORT I had the wonderful opportunity of interviewing my X-Brother in law Todd Duncan for my report. Every time I have discussions with him of this nature, I become more and more impressed with his ability and talent as a manager and a leader. When I asked him if I could interview him, he was open to the idea and said, he felt honored that I chose to do this assignment about him. This was a telephone interview and I followe up with a nice thank you. He is the VP of retail products and sales for the bank. Todd leads a team of 700 employees for the delivery of bank products for 150 branches in the Western United States. ...I had the opportunity to interview Charles Karnella, Assistant Regional Administrator of International Fisheries (IF) at NOAA. Charles is an extremely busy man and it took me awhile to get “fit” into his schedule. He travels quite a bit, which is why I was interested in interviewing him because I also love to travel. Now here I am sitting in Charles’ office with a view of the beautiful Oahu landscape. It’s a delightful day with a temperature of about 85 degrees, and the sun shimmering down brightly. He is friendly and open so I enjoy his company immediately. He starts off by telling me that he has been employed with NOAA for over 30 years…WOW! I am impressed and feel that I am sitting in the presence of a wealth of knowledge. Charles has worked in several different capacities within NOAA and in several different cities. He has been in Hawaii since 1997. Charles named Nancy Foster as one of the persons that have had a lasting impact of him as a leader. She was the NOAA Protected Resources Director. He feels that he learned a lot about management style from her and that gave him a greater appreciation of his people. Charles said that “As a leader you must look out for the well-being of your people. You must ensure that your people have whatever resources they need to be successful in their jobs”. He felt that the most important decision a leader could make is to “do the right thing”. A leader must maintain their integrity and resist the pressure to ‘go with the...

After his sophomore year there, he decided to transfer and UTC is the place where he believes great things will happen. Leaving India as a teenager was a difficult move but he is extremely happy for the decision he made although at first, he had to get used to the American culture living in a city as Chicago, where the cultural clash can be felt extremely fast. Culturally speaking, India is a very wealthy country and possesses a millenary history. According to Ankit there is a great diversity in religions being Hinduism the largest, followed by Sikhism, Islam, Christianity and Jainism. Despite he does not identify himself with any particular religion, he confesses to be amazed by the existent respect between religions in the USA. The most challenging aspect he faced when he first arrived to the States was the food. Back home, Ankit used to eat traditional Indian dishes, and although it’s not hard to find Indian restaurants in the US, college cafeterias hardly ever serve it. After a few weeks he found himself following a completely occidental menu loaded with fat calories. He soon realized a changed was needed or otherwise he would rapidly start gaining weight. She likes them because they have a lot for detailing (very thick, typically vibrant stitching) which she finds to be both fun and less work because she does not have to accessorize. 2. Some challenges run into while jeans shopping would be dealing with her “motherly shape”, which says is a little bit of tummy (so fitting in the waist), as well as fitting in the butt which also bigger. 3. Levi’s were the classic brand from when I was younger, so I own a lot of pairs of those from my 20’s and early 30’s however they do not fit the mommy shape. Because they no longer cater towards her size she started to look at other brands and found that Rockin’ Republic made jeans that fit her “bigger areas” perfectly. 4. Nordstrom Rack, Buckle and Maurice’s are her favorite stores. Because they both carry the brand and style of jeans that she likes (thick stitching kind of glamy jeans). Plus, Nordstrom has some great jean sales and Nordstrom Rack carries discounted brands. 5. Light wash boot cut Silver jeans which fit all of her jean requirements, such as accommodating her larger waist but still fits snugly on the thighs. And a pair of dark cobalt blue flare legged jeans from Maurices that also have detailing (i.e. bedazzling) and very comfy for everyday wear. 6. The ones from Maurcies were $30, while the silver jeans were about $65. Yes it is typical for her, she typically spends no more than...

Career planning involves efforts on the part of the organizations to provide avenues for growth to its employees. Certainly this growth should be accompanied by development. The other side of the coin is the role of employees in career planning. It involves effort on the part of employees to clearly think through and decided areas in which they would like to make a career for themselves. When employees have assessed their career needs and have become aware of organizational career opportunities, the problem is one of alignment. The crucial role has to be played by HRD in ensuring this alignment to build up morale in the organization. A systematic choice of development techniques like training, special assignment, counseling and rotational assignments should be made to ensure this alignment. Employees are often uncertain as to the type of work that would suit them best. There are a number of evaluation instruments available to determine basic aptitudes. Human Resource Development Managers should be able to guide employees by administering these instruments on them. Employees should also find out whether they are loners or socially active. These exercises with some assistance from HRD Managers should help in career need assessment. Realizing that employees have...
