...to the primary or secondary area in which a suspected crime has taken place where physical evidence can be obtained. Such areas include indoor or outdoor locations, vehicles or persons as noted by Jackson and Jackson (2011). Upon identifying a crime scene one is presented with a myriad of information and questions. In order to obtain the answers and evidence the crime scene presents that may lead to a successful future conviction(s), there are a number of important principals, procedures and methods that must be stringently followed and managed by the police’s criminal investigative team. As Jackson and Jackson (2011, p.15) has noted, “The way in which scenes of crime are managed and recorded, and how the physical and digital evidence is located, collected, packaged, labelled and stored, are all fundamental to the success of subsequent forensic examinations.” The main objective of the crime scene investigation team is to recognise, preserve, interpret and reconstruct all the significant physical evidence a crime scene presents (Beaufort-Moore, 2009). The evidence is then examined by a forensic laboratory to provide the investigators with information to solve a particular crime (Lyle, 2004). Edmund Locard’s Principal of Exchange is significant to this process as he understood that...

...Local law enforcement has many different duties that they are responsible for every day and each agency is broken down into many different roles. Local police officers for example are responsible for providing safety within the communities and their specific jurisdiction by patrolling the streets, providing public information, conducting investigations, and forcing traffic laws, preventing crimes, providing and monitoring the local detention centers and drug and alcohol testing to name a few. In 2007, there were approximately 2575 local police departments that were operating in the U.S. In these departments were approximately 463,000 full time personnel. State law enforcement consist manly of the state police and the higher patrol. The duties of these two departments consist of patrolling specific areas, conducting investigations, and enforcing traffic laws on high ways. The state police are much like the local police except that they have a much larger jurisdiction and they are broken down into specialized units, such as, the investigative unit, the aviation unit and tactical unit. The highways protrol's main duty is to enforce traffic laws on state roads and highways, in the means of DUI enforcement, drug trafficking, and traffic accidents. ...Biography of Allan Pinkerton Allan Pinkerton is the name that is often associated with private security in the annals of police history. With his private detective agency, he left an unforgettable mark regarding the private investigation not only in America, but across the globe as well (Dempsey, 2007). This was reinforced by the company’s logo of the all-seeing eye. Pinkerton was born in 1819 in Scotland, and his father was a known police officer. He was not destined to be a law enforcer, as he opted for other careers, but following the political upheavals that manifested in Scotland, he was forced to change his mind. His family had no option but to flee Scotland, and settled in Illinois where he ran a cooperage—a profession that had never crossed his mind. Later on he became a deputy sheriff and was mandated to pursue the counterfeits products that were being transacted in the region. His investigative career commenced when he was transferred to Chicago after his efforts were recognized. He was given a job in the Treasury Department from which he formed a private police investigation unit that dealt with railroad crime. In 1857, Pinkerton’s Protective Police Patrol was developed and it contracted out private security services to local businesses. The agency grew and covered an area encompassing five states. After some successful high-profile investigations, Pinkerton’s fame grew and agencies were established in other cities during the 1860s. Major events characterized...

...After conducting "independent research", present arguments either in favor of or condemning the use of the "polygraph" as either an investigative tool or its admissibility in court. Should the polygraph even be available as an "investigative tool"? I do not believe polygraph test results should be admissible in a court of law as evidence. I am however somewhat in favor of using the test as an investigative tool by law enforcement, as long as it cannot be used in any legal way against a person and with special restrictions for its use. In the state of Texas, polygraph results are not admissible into a court of law; however, if a legally obtained confession is obtained during the course of a post-test interview, the examiner in some cases will be subpoenaed to testify as to the details of that confession under oath. There are too many variables when it comes to the instrument and examiner to make the test reliable. The instrument itself must be working properly, the examiner must be properly trained to ask the proper questions in the right way and the examinee must be willing to participate to even have a modicum of accuracy. If people are ill, on medications, elderly, under the influence of alcohol, mentally challenged or unbalanced or even obese, the results could be skewed. The polygraph has failed on numerous occasions. It failed to catch Gary Ridgway, the "Green River Killer”. He passed the test in 1984 and then confessed 20 years later to killing dozens of women...

...Crime scene investigation Strayer University ~ Online CRJ 320 ~ Criminal Investigations Crime scene investigation Introduction A preliminary investigation in the criminal case was nothing but an inquiry and that has been conducted by the representatives of the law enforcement for gathering much information about the allegation. The main use of the inquiry includes two things such as designing and determining whether the crime was already committed and identifies the suspect or confirming the identity of suspects. By using the results of the inquiry, a decision can be made about whether it can be moved forward with the formal accusation, full investigation and the trial. Guidelines The set of guidelines were assembled for conducting the preliminary investigation of the criminal case. ...investigators in their investigation. The procedures allow the investigators to solve the crime efficiently as well as deterring future crimes. Present day crimes just as human nature are complex. The extent of sophistication of how crimes remains committed and the challenges associated with criminal laws have placed a significant burden, on people choosing a career in criminal investigation and prosecution of criminals, within the system of criminal justice. Most concerns while conducting a criminal investigation has always been on the legality of when and how to conduct the exercise. Physical evidence collection, witness interviewing and assorted surveillance used in the investigation, all fall under a keenly watched category in the investigative process, not all investigations ends correctly; however, the ultimate goal of an investigative process depends on the process undertaken. For this reason, investigative process should follow a predefined pattern. This calls for frequent simulation exercise undertaken by investigators to keep them in check with the predefined patterns of investigation. This paper seeks to give responses to some of the questions posed in a simulation exercise aimed at standardizing a criminal investigation involving multiple explosions traversing two states. Investigative task force Assuming that legal authority was not an issue, should this investigation be conducted by VPD personnel or a multijurisdictional task force The investigation should be conducted...

...Training curriculum Foundations of Criminal Justice System Professor William Bower November 27, 2011 Abstract This observations will present an in service core curriculum re-evaluating an argument on the procedure by which an investigative permit is required and released that gives emphasis to the Fourth Amendment needs. Also, the definition of probable cause and its principles in which it is assembled will be discussed. There are two kinds of investigation that do not necessitate a warrant which will also be enclosed in this paper as well as concentrating on a small number of enquiry such as What the underlying principle is for consenting to warrantless investigation, and if these rationale are influential, and whether or not all investigation necessitate that likely reason are present or if there are discharged or not. Investigative permit procedure and the Fourth Amendment requests Searching warrant is not only disturbing they have to also be precise and they are not all equivalent. If a person uses a search warrant for instance to get hold of a company’s financial records or even a senior manager who is assumed of deception this course of action is not uncomplicated, nevertheless if a person uses a search warrant to situate an confiscated part of proof such as a bullet, or illegal pills then it is reasonably uncomplicated to do. Moreover, The Fourth Amendment has to be well thought-out and taken critically when acquiring a search warrant and the officer has to be...

...Rationale In this unit we have been studying the book, In Cold Blood written by Truman Capote. Having read and studied this nonfiction book on the case of the Clutters, I became interested in the investigation by the police. I decided to write a transcript of a press conference after the arrest of the murderers. It would be held by Al Dewey, the leader of the investigative team in the case of the Clutter family. He is speaking to the public about the details of the police investigation and the motives of the killers. The press conference also gives a small solace for the people of Holcomb, where the crime took place. They have lived under anxiety and fear for 1 month. In order to make the task reflect a real press conference, the conference...

...crimes, Homicide, Sex crimes, and White collar crimes. When first called out to investigate a case, a criminal investigator can expect to work long hours. ...Deception by the Investigating Officer in the Investigative, Interrogative, and Testimonial Processes Anita L. Levy AJS/532 Ethics in Justice and Security June 8, 2015 Professor Melba Pearson Deception by the Investigating Officer in the Investigative, Interrogative, and Testimonial Processes Deception involves “acting in such a way which leads another person to believe something that you, yourself, do not believe to be true” (Alonso-Quecuty, 1992). Deception can occur in any or all of the three stages of the detecting process which include, investigation, interrogation and court testimony. Each stage is subject to increasingly tough normative constraints (Skolnick, 1999). In the investigation phase of a case police are permitted by the courts to engage in deception and they are trained to do just that. The method that they use may include wiretaps, informants, undercover agents, and the possession and sale of illegal materials or substances (Skolnick, 1999). The line between what is acceptable and what is not is that of entrapment. The deception may be employed up to the point that an “agent of the government initiates a court of action that induces an otherwise innocent person to commit a crime in order that the government may then prosecute” (Skolnick, 1999). It is being recognized that these deceptive practices will be used against those who are reasonably suspected of engaging in criminal behavior or otherwise acting in an unjust manner, to include people...
