...Law enforcement is a very important part of American society. Without law enforcement professions, American life as most people know it would virtually fall apart. In addition, states throughout the country require that law enforcement professions meet certain requirements before receiving certification to be employed as police officers. This is normally done through what are known as police academies. The state of Iowa is very similar to other states in that there are certain requirements and conditions that must be met before one can be employed in law enforcement. Like most states, the state of Iowa Police Academy has a basic set of requirements that one must meet in order to be qualified to attend the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. For starters, interested law enforcement professions must be hired or sponsored by a law enforcement agency before attending the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. Iowa Law Enforcement Agency’s require that...

...abbey called “Blue Cloud Abbey,” where many men know as monks seek solitude from the world's distractions and focus on the lord. They invite visitors and pilgrims to come and seek God more. One of the main reasons why we wanted to go there was because a relative of mine called Fr. Denis the abbot or man in charge of the abbey who is a very kind man and would like to see us. I had seen him before and met him a long time ago when he came to visit our family which he is apart of, but that whole situation is another story. So the day had finally come and we were ready to go. My parents told us that we were going to take the truck instead of a plane because plane tickets were expensive and we would have more fun going through Nebraska and up into Iowa which have plains and different land compared to Colorado and will lead us up into South Dakota. My mom told me that it would be a longer drive, but we will enjoy it. The first day we drove out of the state and into Nebraska. Almost immediately after we had crossed the state borders I felt the humidity. Something that I was not expecting and something that was totally different to what I was use to. I decided to get it off my mind I would take a nap. One really bad mistake though. When I woke up I found myself drenched in sweat from sleeping really hard. Flies were all over the place and the car was hotter than hades. The humidity just made it worse and I was a little mad and was almost ready to go home but we took a pit stop at some park...

...not much evaporation occurred that year. Without enough evaporation, the soil remained saturated, and when the extremely above average rainfall came in the summer of 1993 came, the water had nowhere to go but to the rivers and streams. These rivers and streams quickly filled up and by July were cresting at record highs all around the Midwest. Near St. Louis the Mississippi river crested at 19 feet higher than the flood stage and over 6 feet higher than the previous record. With flood waters of that magnitude, levees were easily broken and overtopped. The great flood caused around 15 billion dollars in damage and tens of thousands of people to be displaced, some temporarily and some permanent around the Midwest. Places such as Des Moines, Iowa were hit especially hard, as Water Works plant, the distributor of water in Des Moines, was flooded and taken out of commission. People of Des Moines went nearly 2 weeks without running water at all and nearly 3 weeks without drinking water. Throughout all of this, state and federal assistance were swarming the Midwest with food, water, and shelter to help those who were severely affected by the flooding. By the end of it all, there were short and long term affects left over. Farm land was hurt severely by the flood water and some took several years to fully recover, and some wild life that had to flee the area never fully...

...My State Demands Dena Martin Rasmussen College Author Note This paper is being submitted on July 13, 2014, for Dena Martin’s B234 Business Law course. My State Demands The type of business that I chose is a service business of opening a local bar. I began my research by looking at what I need to do locally first. In Winnebago County you need to call to make an appointment with the local office of the County Clerk. When you have your appointment they want you to have a copy of your lease, a copy of your insurance policy, drawing of your site, complete list of all employees, fingerprints of all owners, know what type of ownership and the fee for the license. You fill out the application and pay your fee which for this type of license it is $1400.00 then your application goes before the hearing board to be heard, which they recommend that you have an attorney with you for this hearing. Depending on what is already on the docket it may take up till a month before you get to go for your hearing and from there it is usually a couple of weeks before you hear from them. In the state of Illinois there are a lot of steps that you have to take. First step is to go the state of Illinois government site and read what all you need to do first. The first step is to make sure you have everything taken care of with the county the business will be in. Second step is to print out the application for your business and fill it out and return it with the filing fee of $500...

...My group was the first TAPTL group to meet. On September 18, four freshman chemical engineering majors got the chance to talk with Dr. Stephanie Loveland. Talking with someone who did all three of their degrees at Iowa State was eye-opening. We were only able to talk to her for an hour because she had to go to a conference for her children but we all meet at the art café and ate behind the building. I was pleasantly surprised to see my friend Ploi Learner in our group and got the chance to meet two more new people, Vincent Anderson and Drake Martin. Dr. Loveland had the unique experience of getting her bachelor, masters, and doctorate at Iowa State, all in chemical engineering. She shared her past fear of not having ISU employ her as a professor because they traditionally do not employ their own students as professors. But she got the job and has been here for a long time. She called herself boomerang student. Her professors gave her that nickname because after getting each degree she would work a few years and then come back to Iowa State again to further her education. I’m a part of TEAM and give the Sweeney stop on both the EIS and daily tours and found out that the study aboard and labs I always talk about are taught by Dr. Loveland. That made the experience even better for me because I got to learn more about them. I got to ask her tons of questions and now my tours are even better than before. Besides learning about the distillation experiment, we learned about her...

...In our town of Dolver, South Carolina everyone new everyone. There were no secrets even though the old southern belief that it was rude to inquire about someone's private business. However people's private business was Mr. Elijah Goodmans job. The editor, writer, owner, reporter, and janitor of The Dolver Times newspaper was a plain man who inherited the Dolver Times from his father and his father before; news was the Goodman's legacy. Mr. Elijah was a plain man, with nothing standing out as odd. He removed his simple hat for the passers by to reveal a head of simple brown hair, starting to grey at the temples; his eyes had the resemblance to river stones, flat and cool, nothing that you would take to long to look at. Whenever anything happened Mr. Goodman was there; never taking notes and never immediately asking questions he could remember everything and he could flawlessly repeat anything he had heard. The town remembers the first story Mr. Goodman ever wrote. 18 years ago when Mr. Goodman was a younger man whose grey eyes, still sharp and full of wonder, made the young women blush. He was educated and well read, who made the parents point him out and say to their sons “That is a respectable gentleman.” while still quick with a joke and could warm a room with his rich laughter. It was no surprize that his father had sent him away to study, every Goodman boy was sent to a private school somewhere in North Carolina. He was working in printing and had ink on his hands by the...

...On December 24, 1968, a 10-year-old girl went missing in Des Moines, Iowa. That same day, a man named Robert Williams was seen carrying a burlap bag with what looked like human legs hanging from the bag. A warrant was issued in Des Moines for Williams’s arrest and two days later, 160 miles away from Des Moines, he turned himself in for questioning. Williams was properly Mirandized and an attorney in Des Moines told him to not say anything until he could talk to his lawyer back in Des Moines. Two detectives who were in the car with Williams engaged in a casual conversation with him. Knowing about Williams’s religious background, the detectives explained to Williams how the little girl’s family at least deserved to give the little girl a proper burial. Williams then lead the detectives to the body. I believe that Williams is guilty in this crime and that the detectives did not break any of Williams’s rights. Some may say that the detectives violated Williams’s right to counsel, others may say that the detectives even took advantage because of Williams having severe psychological problems, but I disagree. Williams was properly read his rights and was told not to speak until he was able to talk to his lawyer, so it’s not like he was unaware. The detectives technically did not question Williams. Instead, they recited the “Christian Burial Speech”, talked about how hard it would be to find the girl’s body due to all the snow from the bad weather, and that if Williams knew where...

...(Zilbermints, 2012). Des Moines police reported that Darla Krom began counseling the alleged victim as part of couple’s therapy at Counseling Associates of Central Iowa. Zilbermints (2012). "Emotionally dependent" means that the nature of the patient's or client's or former patient's or client's emotional condition or the nature of the treatment provided by the counselor or therapist is such that the counselor or therapist knows or has reason to know that the patient or client or former patient or client is significantly impaired in the ability to withhold consent to sexual conduct” (Iowa code 709.15). Understanding the consequences of violating Iowa Law 709.15, Krom turned herself into Des Moines police authorities after being accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a client. Zilbermints (2012). Counseling Associates of Central Iowa where Krom was employed has been in practice for more than 60 years, which makes it source trustworthy. ...Abused: Postville Raid Abused: Postville Raid is a documentary made by Luis Argueta. The documentary is about the Postville Raid that took place on May 12, 2008 at a meatpacking plant in Postville, Iowa. It was known to be one the largest, most expensive and brutal immigration raid in the history of the United States. Argueta reveals the devastating effects of enforcement policies on families, children and communities. The film serves as a cautionary tale against government abuses of the rule of law, the constitution and labor rights. The day of the raid, almost 400 illegal workers employed at the Agriprocessors Inc. meatpacking plant were arrested. The arrested workers were taken from the plant to a nearby fairground, the National Cattle Congress, in Waterloo, Iowa. They were bound by handcuffs at the wrists and chained from the upper torso to their ankles in groups of ten. Hearings were being put on as fast as possible, sentencing five at a time over the course of the three days following the raid. Few workers were allowed to talk to attorneys before being presented before the judge. These immigrant workers were arrested for having false identity paper and were charged with identity theft, document fraud, use of stolen social security numbers and other offenses. Most were convicted within four days of the arrest and sentenced to serve a five month prison sentence before being deported. Many of the immigrant workers had no prior criminal record so they were offered a...
