Al-Qaeda is a militant Islamic fundamentalist group founded in 1988 by Osama bin Laden and Abdullah Azzam. The group is mainly consists of Sunni Muslims who fought against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in the 1980s. These insurgent groups also known as “the Mujahedeen” were aided by the CIA to fight against the Soviet Army in 1979. After the withdrawal of the Soviet Union, the organization started to disperse but continued to oppose what its leaders considered corrupt Islamic regimes and foreign presence in Islamic lands.
