It’s Not So Lonely Being Single In the words of Jo Coudert, “You do not need to be loved, not at the cost of yourself. The single relationship that is truly central and crucial in a life is the relationship to the self. Of all the people you will know in a lifetime, you are the only one you will never lose" (131). I could not agree more with Coudert. People should not sacrifice themselves in order to be loved. Your relationship with yourself is the most important relationship you will ever have. Being single can be very liberating; there are financial upsides to singlehood versus marriage as well as having the freedom to live your life without having to consider someone else first. There are many issues folks are not exposed to which couples have to deal with throughout their relationship. People often assume their single friends are lonely. As for me, I do not believe simply because a person lives the single life means he or she is lonely. Think of the financial advantages unattached people have compared to those in a relationship. In 2011, the average wedding budget in the United States was $27,021 (Jaeger). In the same year, couples spent an average of $15,000 to get divorced (Alterman). Washington State had 41,509 marriages in 2011 and 26,860 divorces and/or annulments (Center for Health Statistics, Washington State Department of Health, Table 1 and Table 5). Altogether, Washingtonians could have saved over a trillion dollars simply by not getting married in the first place. Also, take into consideration all the special occasions you spend money on throughout the course of a relationship: romantic dates, birthday presents, gifts for their family and friends, anniversary celebrations and vacations. Financial difficulties within a couple often cause the demise of a relationship. These are all examples of financial woes single people do not have the burden of dealing with. Men and women who are single experience an independence which people tend to lose when entering into a relationship. Professional writer Kate Taylor, contributor to ehow.com said this regarding being single: When you are in a relationship, you have to be concerned about the feelings of your partner. Once you are single, you get to make plans that feel right for you. You don't have to ask anyone if they care if you hang out with the girls. You can feel free to go out and meet new people, have conversations and even go on some dates. Being single allows you the social freedom to do what feels best for you, without having to worry about what someone else thinks. (Taylor)

I know many who people who lost a sense of who they are after being in a long term relationship, including myself. They realize they have become a version of themselves which their significant other has created. By the end of the only long term relationship I have ever had I realized: all of the things I gave up, which I loved, because my boyfriend did not like them and I no longer felt like myself anymore. People also end up depending on their significant other for providing happiness and forget how to be happy on their own. When you are single, you are the only one who is responsible for your own happiness. Granted, there may be outside influences which can affect how happy you are, but ultimately it is up to you. I believe those who are happy with themselves do not experience the loneliness of those who are not.
Codependency is an unhealthy side effect of being in a relationship which you do not even realize happens until you are single again. “Some people criticize the codependency movement and say that it's created more loneliness. They argue that relationships are nurturing and that we're naturally meant to be dependent. I couldn't agree more, but the point is that codependent relationships are not only painful, but are sometimes destructive” (Lancer). Men and women become so dependent on each other when they are with someone, they will stay with them regardless of any physical, mental or emotional abuse inflicted by their significant other. They develop a fear of being alone and the thought of supporting themselves is terrifying. Why anyone would choose to be in an abusive relationship instead of leaving is beyond me.
There are other benefits to living on your own besides the financial upside and the freedom of being single. You don’t have to worry about what your new “family” will think of you. Elite Daily interviewer Evelyn Pelczar stated, “When you’re in a relationship, you’re not just in a relationship with the girl/guy, but you’re in it with their family, friends and even their pets. Chances are there’s someone in their circle you’re not going to like” (Pelczar). There is no pressure to get everyone’s approval. The only person’s approval you need is yours.
The emotional roller coaster is something I do not miss riding when you are involved with someone. At first, everything is exciting and new, but if things do not stay interesting for both parties and one or both people cease to be happy, the bond will not last. Some people get bored and will end up cheating. Others will just keep dragging out the relationship until the other person calls it quits. Anyway it ends; both people are left being alone with their heartache, along with many other emotions depending on how the break up goes down.
I think Orson said it best: “We're born alone, we live alone, we die alone. Only through our love and friendship can we create the illusion for the moment that we're not alone” (Welles). Our family, friends and loved ones fill in the time which we would otherwise be spending alone, something we are all grateful for I am sure. Personally, I think friends and family, and maybe an occasional loved one, are enough for me. With all the benefits that come along with living the single life: large financial burdens are avoided, independence becomes valued, the realization it is okay to be on your own; to me, it seems like an easy choice. All of these things are why some of us choose to be single. Remember, loneliness is not always something that comes along with being single, especially for those of us who embrace being with ourselves without having a significant other; people can be in a marriage or relationship with someone and still feel alone.

Loneliness in Our Society Today

...how people interact with each other and their behavior. I will be researching how the feeling of loneliness drives people to use the internet more often within a group of 10 people. I will focus primarily on social media usage, such as Facebook. I predict that the more social media an individual uses, the lonelier they feel. One way of thinking about loneliness is as a difference between one's desired and achieved levels of social interaction, while solitude is simply the lack of contact with people. There is clearly a difference in the two. Loneliness is more of the way a person feels; if a person thinks they are lonely, and then they are lonely. People can be lonely while in solitude, or in the middle of a crowd. A person is lonely when they want more social interaction than what is currently available. This is why somebody can be alone and not feel lonely. If a person gets too little or too much social interaction, this could lead to feelings of loneliness or over-stimulation. One study found that although time spent alone tended to depress a person's mood and increase feelings of loneliness; it also helped to improve their cognitive state. Solitude can have positive effects on individuals. Once the alone time was over, people's moods tended to increase significantly. This could vary amongst individuals however; if an individual is always alone then their mood might not increase. What they do while they are alone could also lead to more feelings of...

Daffodils

...Daffodils 2) Questions and Answers 3) Summary 4) Explanation Poem I wandered lonely as a Cloud That floats on high o'er vales and Hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden Daffodils; Beside the Lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance. The waves beside them danced; but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: A Poet could not but be gay, In such a jocund company: I gazed--and gazed--but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought: For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the Daffodils. Questions and Answers 1) What was the poet doing when he saw the daffodils? Answer: The poet was walking around through the hills and valleys, but he felt all lonely and mopey. Suddenly, as he passed the lake, he noticed a big group of yellow daffodils waving in the breeze. 2) What does the poet compare himself with? “I wandered lonely as a Cloud That floats on high o'er vales and Hills” Answer: From the above lines we could understand that the poet was comparing himself with clouds when he was walking around lonely. 3) Where were the daffodils growing? “Beside the Lake, beneath the trees” Answer:...

Chinese Cinderella Mother Teresa Quotes

...“Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted are the greatest poverty.”- Mother Teresa. In Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah, Mother Teresa’s words of wisdom apply to Adeline's life because throughout the book, Adeline feels isolated and unwanted, and Adeline always says how much she wishes to feel wanted. She feels lonely, undesired, but more lonely at home than at school. Mother Teresa’s words of wisdom about being lonely apply to Adeline’s life because feeling lonesome is something that Adeline is very familiar with. She is lonely when the girls at school leave, when Niang treats her like an outcast, when her siblings gang up on her, and countless other times. For example, in the book, Adeline knows she must not tell anyone how Father...

I find it astonishing how two people can keep their love for one another throughout for 50 years. It’s not every relationship that lasts for 50 years. There are so many movies, songs and poems about love. I guess it’s because it has such a big influence on our life. Considering what my grandmother told me, I asked her how they preserved their love for each other, she said. “It’s a lot about honesty, trust, respect and tradition”. It has been a lot of hard work, she said, and they succeeded. There will always be ups and downs in a relationship, but that’s the beauty of it. Siblings vs Child

... Being an only child vs Siblings In today’s society “being the only child” and “having siblings” has been a question that have been asked from time to time. Some people think it’s better to be the only child, others feel like having siblings is the way to go. In my opinion as an only child I think having siblings is way better. Being an only child has a lot of benefits but having siblings outweighs being an only child If you’re an only child your parents only have you to spend money on without having to worry that they have share amongst you other siblings something. As an only child you grow up more independently and being able to fend for yourself better. You get more attention from your parents you never have to compete with anyone to get all of the attention from your parents but of course if you had other siblings your parents would have to share their attention. Another good thing about being an only child is your maturity level is always higher than people your age, your mentality is always different than people your age.so people will often tell you that your so mature for your age. This also makes you more introverted as a person because you get to spend more time alone. And think about stuff differently. The most important pro to being an only child is you have no sibling rivalry. Having sibling rivalry prevents so much issues in a family. There are some disadvantages to being an only child also some of the disadvantages...

She had never ever in her entire life been so mad, irritated and disappointed. She didn't give Claire a chance to explain, why she did what she did, before she began to yell again. 2015 "Do the Write Thing" Challenge

...students, and parents try to stop it, but sometimes it’s not enough. Teen violence has grown throughout the years. It has many causes and has affected many people’s lives. Everyone is affected whether you are the person being wronged or not. So, how has youth violence affected me, what are some of the causes of youth violence and what can I do to stop it? Assuredly, violence has affected my life in a negative way, but not directly. When I hear a student being called names, see them being harassed, or watch a news report detailing physical or mental abuse of a youth, it fills me with anger, sadness and sometimes fear. It’s horrible that this sort of thing happens and ignoring it only makes matters worse. Our schools do their part with helping students with the prevention of bullying and by having guidance counselors on hand to address any issues that arise. At my middle school there’s a rule that requires all students to sit at the lunch table of their designated third period class. One of the reasons for this rule is to prevent a bully from a different class from sitting at a table and harassing another student during lunch. Unfortunately, this rule negatively affects me and many of the other students. If your lunch period were the only opportunity for you to sit with a friend that wasn’t in your third period class, you would be unable to do so without receiving a detention. In order to better understand why bullying exists and why it’s necessary to have these rules, I needed to better...

However, at the same time when we are mentioning about other family members it’s clear to see how they think about unmarried females as a minority. In a way it’s considered...
