...Shaquille O’Neal Misiri J. Parker Jr. American Intercontinental University Shaquille O’Neal (Shaq) is a retired basketball player who played 19 seasons in the NBA, as one of the most dominating centers the world as ever seen. He played for teams such as the, Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Boston Celtics. O’Neal was born in Newark, New Jersey on March 6, 1972. O’Neal didn’t achieve success over night, he had to face different obstacles to become one of the greats. Being raised without his biological father, cause of drug addiction and possession. The reason for selecting this individual is because I love the game of basketball. Shaq has been one of my favorite NBA players of all time. I’ve watched Shaq struggle on the court, but never off the court. I’m inspired to write a paper about one of the most dominating centers. One obstacle that Shaq had to face was money. Shaq was drafted by the Orlando Magic in 1992. He spent his first million that he earned within 30 minutes. Like most people, when you get a large sum of money you just want to go out and spend it, just like Shaq did. Not thinking about how to save or your future or if you can impact someone else’s life who may not have food to eat, or nowhere to sleep. Another obstacle Shaq had to face was his Los Angeles teammate Kobe Bryant. “It’s not about how much money you make; the question is are educated enough to keep it? (Shaquille O’Neal)” This individual...

...Becoming a Better Man Courtney Taylor Strayer University English Writing 090 November 29, 2012 Cynthia Gentry Becoming a Better Man The reason why I believe I am a better man is because one I have changed my attitude about life and the negativity of things. Second, I have come to the realization that it is not all about me anymore because I have my four year old daughter who is my world. Last, but not least I wanted a better way to provide for my daughter and myself , which was coming back to school to get more knowledge and a degree so I will have a firm paying job that will help reach the goals that I have put forth for myself. To begin, I must say my attitude about life was very frustrating. I looked at things as if the world owed me something. I never took the time to take into consideration how tender this life really is. We only get one life with limited opportunities in life. I had to get in my right mind by looking back on certain situations I was putting myself in and the outcome of those situations. I was looking at a short life for myself and a daughter without her father, which is a horrible thing for a young lady to grow up without. I had to get down and ask God to be my leader and to come on in and have His way. I believe that was the best move I could have made to begin this new journey to becoming a better man. I came into realization that these things about me were not what should be in my mind to be trying...

...The National Hockey League (NHL), established in 1917, had not experienced a power struggle like it did when negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) for the 2004-2005 season. Gary Bettman, Commissioner of the NHL, announced on February 16, 2005 that due to the inability to negotiate a new CBA with the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA), the 2004-2005 NHL season would be cancelled (Malhotra & Hout, 2006). The consequences of a lockout would be significant, including lost revenue for cities and the teams (an estimated two billion from ticket sales, media, sponsorship, concessions, and stadium bookings), employee layoffs, loss of fans who redirected their attention and spending to other avenues, and lost player salaries estimated at one billion. Regardless of the consequences, the reason to reach an agreement should have been for the fans who so faithfully followed the game and supported the players and the owners (Staudohar, 2005). The fans were out of luck; there were too many barriers to reaching a negotiated agreement prior to the start of the season. The main barrier to the negotiations was not having the wrong people negotiating, but the agenda of issues (Watkins, 2000). The powerhouses were power struggling, each unwilling to listen to or concede to the others views. For example, one barrier was NHL’s desire to address operating losses and what they viewed as an unstable financial condition by establishing a cap in salaries and linking salaries...

...Conflict An issue everyone faces day on a daily basis is conflict, as it is inevitable. Conflict is a natural part of the environment, yet it is very difficult to understand. Conflict arises from a disagreement when groups have opposing goals and see the other party as interfering with their ability to reach a desired goal (“Organizational Conflict Scale: Reexamining the Instrument.” 16). A conflict can be minor or major. As well as positive or negative, depending on the way it is handled. An organization needs a minor amount of conflict as it helps boost performance and increase communication by creating a positive effect, known as a constructive conflict (“Organizational Conflict Scale: Reexamining the Instrument.” 8). The type of conflict that has a negative effect on an organization and causes damage is destructive conflict (“Organizational Conflict Scale: Reexamining the Instrument.” 8). The National Hockey League has had many conflicts over the past two decades which has cause tension and lockouts. There are different types of conflicts. In the NHL the conflict that arose was an inter-group conflict. An inter-group conflict is classified as disagreement among groups of people (Bauer 234). One example of this is a conflict between an employee union and management. The NHL lockout was a labor dispute between the NHL Players Union and the National Hockey League. The underlying causes were over the league revenue share between players and owners and rules on contracts for...

...INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG School of Business and Management INDONESIABUSINESSCASECENTER (IBCC) LB LIA Buahbatu: Surviving in a Harsh Environment It was a bright Monday morning on January 2011 when Iwan enters his office room. In his desk there is a consolidated report of the LB LIA branch performance during the previous year. When he read the report he let out a silent sigh, his fear has turn into a reality. The amount of enrolled student has dropped again, and since the primary source of income for an English course such as LIA is the course fee paid by students that means net profit has dropped as well. Iwan has become the branch manager of the LB LIA Buahbatu branch for more than 15 years. The branch was open in 1990; in the early days acquiring potential customers is easy, just by doing promotion using pamphlet, banner, and brochure students already lined up during the placement test date. At some point LIA Buahbatu even have to decline a student application to enroll because there is no more available space. Sadly this situation does not last forever. Since 2001 – 2010 LIA Buahbatu experienced a steady decline in the amount of enrolled student. Compared to 2001 the amount of student in 2010 has dropped up to 36%, and since the primary source of income for an English course such as LIA is the course fee paid by students that mean net profit has dropped as well, in 2010 the net profit for LIA Buahbatu has declined up to 32% compared against 2001. ...The Indus River Basin: The Continuing Water Disputes Between India and Pakistan Anise Ko August 7, 2014 Professor Beth Bennett Introduction The Indus River was a key factor in the development of the Asian civilization. It originates in the Tibetan plateau and flows through four different countries: Tibet, Afghanistan, India and Pakistan to end in the Arabian Sea. The Indus River catchment area is as follows: sixty percent of the area belongs to Pakistan, about twenty percent belongs to India, five percent belongs to Afghanistan and fifteen per cent belongs to Tibet (Aljazeera, 2011). There are a total of six main tributaries: Sutlej, Ravi and Beas flow through Punjab and the other three rivers of the Indus basin - Indus, Jhelum and Chenab run through the territory of Jammu and Kashmir (Harvard, 2011). Since the partition of the British Indian empire in 1947, Pakistan and India have fought over the province of Punjab and the state of Kashmir, which resulted in a partition of the area between the two countries. The water dispute is also closely related to partition of the Kashmir region, too. The six rivers run through India which controls Jammu and Kashmir, before reaching Pakistan and the part of Jammu and Kashmir governed by Pakistan (Harvard, 2011). The geological allocation described above brought out significant disadvantages to Pakistan in early the1950s as a consequence of the political conflicts between the two countries. The help of the World Bank together with...

...Improving Academic Performance and Achievement of children and youth in foster care Joanna Bermudez Mercy College Summer 2013 Introduction and Problem Statement Approximately fifty percent of adolescents in this country’s foster care system are graduating from high school each year. In NYS, less than forty-four percent of adolescent’s in the foster care system graduate from high school yearly. The outcomes of youth who leave the foster care system between the ages of 18 and 21 are statistically grim; less than 50% of these youth are equipped with a high school diploma (Scannapeieco, Connel-Carrick, and Pinter, 2007), and with-in two years of leaving the system, 25% of them face unemployment, homelessness, and/or incarceration (Krinsky, 2007). For all children, especially children in foster care, having the proper advocacy, stability, educational coordination and guidance are vital in ensuring their academic success. Unfortunately, children in foster care are less likely to receive these components to assist them in becoming successful in academia, which in turn affects their chances to live a productive adult life. The needs of the children and youth in foster care are in need of reformation across each state throughout the nation. Since the development of foster care, the focus of intervention has and continues to be a reactive approach, instead of a tactical approach. The intervention of foster care seeks to ensure the physical safety and well-being of each child...

A technical reality, major parts of the information super highway are under construction all over the US (1994).” During the digital revolution of the last decade, modern humanity has experienced a shift in traditional media consumption habits, which is now culminating with mobile technology. In examining the emerging mobile landscape, two things are increasingly apparent. One, mobile technology is heading into uncharted territories. Two, this is happening at unprecedented rates. This landscape is so unpredictable that the introduction of a new highly...
