It's Time To Get Paid

As a student athlete, sometimes life can get hectic. I often find myself feeling stressed when I come home from a grueling practice to copious amounts of homework. Sometimes, this makes me feel like I am not able to do both. It makes me feel like I will have to prioritize one, either my school work or volleyball, over the other because I am unable to maintain a balance. Now, I realize that this is an error in my own mindset. I understand that “if you imagine less, less will be what you undoubtedly deserve” (Debbie Millman). I recognize that believing there is a limit creates one. When it came to my school workload, I had a fixed mindset. I chose to believe that I was not able to accomplish all of the homework I wanted to get done in a night because it was impossible. This was an excuse I gave myself in order to justify doing less work. I was being lazy and not allowing myself to grow. Now that I see where I have gone wrong, I am going to try to apply a growth mindset to my school life - especially in English. When faced with an essay, AP World test, and a presentation all on the same day, I am going to look upon the occasion as a way to learn and better myself. I will never think that I cannot do it. I will push myself and get it done. This is the only way I will be able to learn and grow so that …show more content…
I am going to keep this goal in mind as I go through this year’s English class. When new concepts are thrown at me, I will use grit to learn them quickly and efficiently. I know that the day will come when I one day feel overwhelmed in this class, but I will meet whatever challenge there at the time with the belief that I can get through it. If I ever feel like I do not want to do something, I will remind myself of my goal of getting into a high ranked university and all of the work I need to accomplish in order to get

College Football Players

...Should College Football Players Get Paid? Many have questioned whether college football players should be getting paid or not. Micheal Gonchar’s blog, “Should College Players Get Paid?” questions if it’s fair that the only ones not getting paid are the players. College Athletes are put in the position to work hard on the field and to also keep their academics up to par. It’s not easy balancing in being a full time student and an athlete, their commitment has to be to the sport and school. While college staffs and universities make millions and college football players only get $550 worth if they even happen to make it to the AT&T Cotton Bowl. I believe that college football players getting paid is not a good idea. Getting paid would be a plus, but I believe that if the football player has a passion for football and enjoys playing football then money shouldn’t matter. Getting paid may cause these players not to give it their all. Today football players put their hopes up to make it to the NFL and the big check that comes along with it. By them getting paid in college would just defeat the purpose of working hard to strive for that goal. Getting paid in college defeats the purpose of what college really is, people go to college for their education and to prepare themselves for jobs in the future. Paying college football players will ruin college athletics because if college football players are getting paid they will no longer dedicate their time to the sport and it would defeat...

Should College Athletes Get Paid Essay

...College Athletes Get Paid? College athletes should be paid for playing at the college level. This topic is interesting to me because it has been a debatable topic for a long time. College athletes deserve to get a pay check because they are still responsible to keep their grades up while playing and training for football. They work harder than the pros because they have more of a motivation to get to the higher profession than someone who is already there. They can use that money to help support their families. The coaches are getting paid but they don’t play a sport or endure in a sport. The NCAA is making a profit out of them. In all honesty, the college athletes are one of the most hardest working athletes that don’t get paid. College...

Should Kids Get Paid To Do Chores

...Why should kids get paid to do chores, if it’s their own responsibility in life? I believe kids should not get paid for doing chores, so they can be prepared for their jobs and future. But when kids grow up, they have to do their own dishes if they want them to be clean and they have to clean their houses or they will be a mess, so why don’t they start practicing now? Basically, kids shouldn’t be paid to do chores because it’s part of everyday life. In the article, it said that chores have to be done no matter if you get paid, or not. The article also said that sometimes we do jobs not for a reward, but because we simply have to do them. All these things are good reasons...

...Practice” module of WileyPlus). When you are considering any type of long-term investment – whether you are making the investment in a project, or making an investment in a long-term asset, or attempting to get long-term financing for your own projects or investments – it is not OK to consider the cash flows in terms of current dollars. The existence of inflation means that a dollar today will buy more than that same dollar next year. The year-to-year effect may be small when inflation is low, as it is now, but when your investment horizon is measured in decades instead of months, that inflation effect can get very large. If you are not sure what I mean by “large” – just ask your parents (or aunts, uncles, friends who are 15-20 years older than you) how much they paid for a gallon of gas when they were in college. For me, I graduated from college in 1996, and in that year, I usually paid about $1.30 for the gallon of gas that now costs me $3.50. I paid about $1.00 per pound for a whole chicken. Now that same chicken costs $1.35 per pound. That’s a 30% increase for the chicken, over the last 16 years…and for the gas? It’s a 169% increase over the same period. You can see from this example that inflation is not the only thing that makes prices go up over time, because if it was, then the bread would increase by 30% and so would the gas. This is not the case (30% vs 169%). So there are other factors under consideration. With the gas, the “other factors” have to do...

...worker bee gets two or three precious weeks off out of a whole year to relax and see the world -- much less than what people in many other countries receive. And even that amount of vacation often comes with strings attached. Some U.S. companies don't like employees taking off more than one week at a time. Others expect them to be on call or check their e-mail even when they're lounging on the beach or taking a hike in the mountains. "I really would like to take a real, decent vacation and travel somewhere, but it's almost impossible to take a long vacation and to be out of contact," said Don Brock, a software engineer who lives in suburban Washington. "I dream of taking a cruise or a trip to Europe, but I can't imagine getting away for so long." The running joke at Brock's company is that a vacation just means you work from somewhere else. So he takes one or two days off at a time and loses some vacation each year. Only 57% of U.S. workers use up all of the days they're entitled to, compared with 89% of workers in France, a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll found. Brock's last long holiday was more than 10 years ago, when he took a two-week drive across the country. 'Americans work like robots' It's a totally different story in other parts of the world. Nancy Schimkat, an American who lives in Weinheim, Germany, said her German husband, an engineer, gets six weeks of paid vacation a year, plus national holidays -- the norm. His company makes sure he takes all of it. It's typical...

...Johnson Eng 112 Ms. Pryor 22 September 2015 Should college athletes get paid? Many people debate if college athletes should get paid. Yes, college athletes should receive some form of financial compensation. College athletes represent their university, while their university reap all the financial gain. College athletes are asked to uphold the highest standards while representing the school, which include, but not limited to getting good grades, playing to their full potential, and to present themselves in a respectful way in the community at all times. Gaming companies are allowed to use their likeness and the student will never see one penny. Is it fair that a college athlete has worked all their life to become the best of the best in their conference and although they are the ones that put in all the hard work someone else make all the millions? Coaches push their athletes to the max to be the greatest and to win them a championship. Coaches may not care about their player’s education because their players are allowed to miss up to a quarter of all class days during their spring semester. Sometimes coaches will cheat the system to assist certain players because they know if they do not make the grades or get into any sort of trouble outside the field, their star athletes will not be able to play in the Big Games. This is an important fact because some of the mishaps players get themselves into come from their lack of having money to do certain things....

Football

...football players should get paid to play football. I feel like this is a topic that a lot of football players that is transitioning from high school to college discuss frequently. There has been a few controversies on if college football players have been paid under the table. When you hear that they have been paid under the table, it means that either the college they have chosen has given them money secretively, the head football coach paid them out of their own pockets, or even someone they know personally has paid them to play for that school. College football players should not be paid to play football. There are many reasons on why they should not get paid. When you hear a certain college name, the first thing you hear come out of someone’s mouth is something about how good or bad their football team is. Football players are shown a lot of attention. On their campuses they are very well known, whether or not if they play in the games or sit on the sidelines. Most college football players end up getting a full ride to school because they play football. If they are not paying for school out of pocket, they shouldn’t get paid to do something they are supposed to do. Another reason why they shouldn’t get paid to play football is the fact that other teams that play sports on the campus don’t get paid. Why out of all teams, football should be the one to get paid. For example, a baseball team on the campus might be better than the football team but they don’t get anything. If you pay...

Amateurs vs. Athletes

...College football and men’s basketball have become such huge commercial enterprises that together they generate more than $6 billion in annual revenue, more than the National Basketball Association. A top college coach can make as much or more than a professional coach. Powerful conferences like the S.E.C. and the Pac 12 have signed lucrative TV deals, while the Big 10 and the University of Texas have created their own sports networks. Last year, Turner Broadcasting and CBS signed a 14-year, $10.8 billion deal for the television rights to the NCAA’s men’s basketball national championship tournament (a.k.a “March Madness”). And what does the labor force that makes it possible for coaches to earn millions, and causes marketers to spend billions, get? Nothing. The workers are supposed to be content with a scholarship that does not even cover the full cost of attending college. Any student athlete who accepts an unapproved, free hamburger from a coach, or even a fan, is in violation of NCAA rules. Nevertheless, the NCAA prohibits any form of payments, beyond scholarships, to any athlete who is responsible for producing the revenue. The NCAA also restricts the ability for any college athlete to earn income from an outside source. In a study sponsored by the NCAA, they discovered that college players have less money than non-athletic students, and almost fifty-eight percent are not even provided the education they are promised (Branch). Players are not stupid. They look around and see...

Footballers Paid More Than Soldiers

...21/11/13 Should footballers be paid more than soldiers? Ikrah Batool Is it really fair that footballers get paid so many millions more than a soldier does in a single year? Thousands of soldiers put their lives at risk for the safety of your country, slaving day in day out with minimal rest, sleeping in the horrendous heat and fighting in the freezing cold in the night. Whereas footballers just train for ninety minutes a day and then go home to their nicely warmed and cooled pad and rest. And this is what footballers get paid hundreds of thousands of pounds a week for! Ridiculous! Steven Gerrard reportedly earns £140,000 a week for kicking a ball around for ninety minutes. On the other hand a first class private earns just £14,000 a week for which they risk getting seriously hurt and probably traumatized for life and to support themselves and their families. Some footballers earn over 200 times what a soldier does! Soldiers are away from their families for long periods of time, putting themselves at risk whilst and potentially suffering from long term medical conditions. On the other hand footballers “earn” their money by training a couple of mornings per week and running about on the pitch at the weekend: consequently these spoilt babies are, thus able to spend time their Porsches, going out to clubs and misbehaving, whilst troops in Afghanistan spend their spare time trying to catch up on sleep on hard beds in sweltering heat. Troops have to do their job in all...

Maternity Leave: Should Mothers Get Paid?

...serious topic that is happening to mothers around the world. Mothers in California and the United States, deal with the problem of unpaid maternity or family leave. Mothers in certain jobs don’t get the rightful benefit or proper pay of maternity leave. Some mothers have to gather enough sick time to get maternity leave, and that just doesn’t seem right. With the pay that you get from state disability, many can barely pay the medical bills that come with a pregnancy and on top of that the amount of money it takes to buy food and clothing for the baby. Therefore, mothers on maternity leave should get a reasonable amount of pay, rather than saving up sick time or not getting paid at all. Roughly 12% of women in the United States get paid maternity leave, that leaves around 88% of women without paid leave. Women should have the right to have a reasonable amount of pay to support necessary needs. These needs are clothing, food, diapers, strollers, and much more. All these items don't come at a cheap price. So having mothers get higher maternity leave pay would benefit the mothers, rather than not being about to support for her child....

The Ncaa Brothel

...NCAA college athlete organization has been a huge success with fans all over America. Millions of people attend big tournaments and exhibition games on the regular basis. Sports are no longer fun and games; it’s a business. Universities make an ample amount of money due to the praise college sports receive. Yes, some players on the team do go to school with a free scholarship, but is that it? People would be truly grateful to obtain a scholarship for an expensive university, but the situation that college athletes are in has to be examined closely. You can even compare the college athletes to your local prostitute. They are using their bodies for the income growth of huge universities, which will be the pimp. The school receives money from ticket sales, television contracts, sport-related merchandise, and many other sport-related revenue builders. The income that the universities obtain compared to what the athletes earn is nothing, a ratio of 1:0. Student athletes should be paid because they risk their health, it’s not fair financially, and it leads to students doing illegal acts. During the act of playing a competitive and physical sport, there are health risks that each player takes. Basketball players become injured all the time during playing their sport. Whether it’s an ACL tear, meniscus tear, broken ankle, there are all critical injuries that may jeopardize one’s career or pockets. The National Collegiate Athletic Association is very straight forward in terms of injury...
