When learning about a company there are several key messages that can give a clear picture into the companies standing, market choice and corporate standards, one of these messages is the company mission statement. A mission statement is a short missive created by a company to explain their unique properties and purposes which set it apart from the competition and explain the overall operational process. The overall purpose of a mission statement is to describe the products, technologies, markets in a way which clearly reflects the values and priorities of the decision makers and their reflection on the company as a whole. During that downturn the board of directors decided for the betterment of the company to replace the then CEO Mike Ullman with the new CEO Ron Johnson, an executive from Apple who had been very successful in his past position. (Pearce II & Robinson, 2015) During this time JCPenney re-evaluated previous mission statements and created a new one by blending the best of the past with the hope for the future. With the changes in executive management in recent years JC Penney has re-evaluated their corporate mission statement to assure that it better matches the ideals of the newest management team. This new mission statement better reflected a new idea of removing sales and coupons to replace the overall sales promotion set up of everyday low pricing. This overall mission didn’t work out with their customers resulting in the CEO being replaced and the new mission to return to their previous standards of sales and performance for the overall success of the company and improved customer …show more content…
The first reads “To drive Sales and Profit growth by ensuring our Customers and our Associates always know they’re first in our Stores by what we do!” JCPenney aims to put its customers and employees first and foremost with everything they do. It was never a secret what James Cash Penney valued when he opened his first store called The Golden Rule. "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you," is a mission statement that guided Penney and his employees for as long as he was actively involved in his business. (Farfan, 2015) Currently JCPenney supports the philosophy that superior performance is possible by following through on a series of eight "Winning Together Principles" that are the mission for JC Penney employees today. These eight principles are associates, integrity, performance, recognition, teamwork, quality, innovation, and community. Of these principles five are internal promises through which employees are told they will be trained, supported, and encouraged, one relates to the promise of providing quality products and services, and the final two assist in outlining the corporate social responsibility standards that would be followed (Farfan, 2015).

Johnson was the former successful Apple Store executive and strategist who was hired in hopes to entirely overhaul JC Penney’s (JCP) current strategy, moving away from tactics former CEO Mike Ullman implemented due to failing revenues and steadily decreasing stocks over a seven year period (Springer, 2013). Johnson was very ambitious and planned a major strategic transformation of JCP. He fired seasoned executives and many high level employees he deemed unwilling to accept new change and brought in a new executive/leadership team. Retail associates were evaluated under a color code system and if they were not accepting of the new policies they too were fired.
