...Carlos Cuervo MGF1107 723864 723866 Mathematician Essay Assignment March14, 2013 “Jaime Alfonzo Escalante” What does it takes to become good at math? For Jaime Escalante, one of America’s most famous teachers, it only takes “ganas”. As Mr. Escalante often explained, “ganas” (Spanish word for desire) will motivate any student to find and exploit their full potential, regardless of their economic or ethnic background. Jaime Escalante was born in La Paz, the capital city of Bolivia, South America. With the example of his parents, who were both teachers, he found a passion for teaching in his native country. Escalante taught math for twelve years before migrating to the United States with his wife Fabiola. The first few years in the new country, he applied himself to learn English while working in restaurants washing dishes. He went to college for the second time in his life just to get certified as a teacher in the United States. He received the highest honor as Magna Cum Laide at graduation and right away found a position as a computer teacher at Garfield High School in downtown Los Angeles, California. To his surprise, the school lacked the computers he needed for the class, so he took an alternative position as a math teacher. In that first year of teaching, Mr. Escalante was confronted with many obstacles. The school was in the verge of loosing its operative certification; many students scored poorly in their academics...

...Reflection Paper on Stand and Deliver “At a tough school, someone had to take a stand… and someone did. Together, one teacher and one class proved to America they could… Stand and Deliver” –taglines of the movie “Stand and Deliver.” Jaime Escalante has a steady job but left it for a lowly position math teacher at James A. Garfield High School. Knowing that the school is where rebellion runs high and teachers are more focused on discipline than in academics, he is determined to change the system and challenge the students to soar high in excellence. Of course, the students will not like a teacher who engages them in the things they don’t like. But as days passed, Escalante was able to convince the students and got their attention by adopting unconventional teaching methods and conveying the necessity of math in everyday living. He successfully instilled in the mind of his students that all use math everyday. With his determination and perseverance, he was able to turn gang members, no-hopers, and even the most troublesome teens into dedicated students who are ready to learn. The school board has low expectations on the students and the teachers even called them illiterates. But Jaime Escalante didn’t listen to the concerns and skepticism of his colleagues. Instead, he realized that his students are capable of more than the expectations and criticisms thrown to them. He developed a math program which requires the students to take summer classes, including Saturdays, so that...

Lessons in what not to do can often be found in cities, where most officials, overwhelmed by a flood of problems, try to cope by naming and solving them one at a time. If they are faced with congestion, their answer is to widen streets and build bypasses and parking garages. Crime? Lock up the offenders. Smog? Regulate emissions. Illiteracy? Toughen standards. Litter? Raise fines. Homelessness? Build shelters, and if that seems to fail, jail the loiterers. Insufficient budget to fund all these competing priorities? Raise taxes or impose sacrificial austerity, to taste. Disaffected voters? Blame political enemies. Sometimes single-problem, single-solution approaches do work, but often, as previously described, optimizing one element in isolation pessimizes the entire system. Hidden connections that have not been recognized and turned to advantage will eventually tend to create disadvantage. Consider what happened in Borneo in the s. Many Dayak villagers had malaria, and the World Health Organization had a solution that was simple and direct. Spraying DDT seemed...

...Stand and Deliver Stand and Deliver (1988) is a film about a teacher and a group of students who went above the expectations of everyone around them and all passed the AP exam. The concept of self-concept is very evident in this film. Self-concept is the “sum total of everything that encompasses the self- referential term ‘me’” (42). A person cannot isolate themselves and develop a self-concept. It is built around social communication; it has to grow from interpersonal communication. The film is based in East Los Angeles, not a place where you want to walk in the streets alone. There, all of the students live and go to school at Garfield High School. Because they live in such an under-privilege neighborhood and go to a school in that neighborhood, they aren’t seen to be as intelligent as someone who lives in Beverly Hills. There was a part of the film during a teacher meeting when Mr. Escalante brought up that he wanted to teach calculus to his students the next school year. This was when the principal laughed and sarcastically said “Boy, that’s a jump.” Because self-concept is developed through interpersonal communication, the fact that even the principal of their school doesn’t believe they could do such a feat like pass the AP exam, they haven’t thought much about their education. School was a joke to them so they focused on their own personal lives at home and with their friends. That is, until Mr. Escalante became their new math teacher. Self-concept can change...

Furthermore, when applying our learning in Organizational Development to a real-life situation, Individual differences personality, attitudes, abilities, emotions. From the outset Mr. Escalante (the math teacher) is faced with a challenging predicament. Arriving for his first day of school, he is confronted with a set of rebellious student’s intent on making his life hell. The negative attitude of these students towards learning was clearly evident, as was their low self-esteem. Self-esteem is a belief about one’s own self-worth based on an overall self-evaluation. “If they try and don’t succeed, you will shatter what little confidence they did have” (Menendez, 1988). Through a history of meager facilitators the students believe that their opinions and contributions are not taken seriously, and to...

...of why, in inner-city schools and elsewhere, approximately 50% of teachers leave the profession within the first five years? Was Jaime Escalante a true improvement in the system? Or not? Was he an exemplary teacher? Was he a model of change? Or was he a one-of-a-kind flash in the pan? Was he an example of how change happens in public schools? An example of why education will not improve, despite the best efforts of the best teachers? Are standout, brilliant teachers like Escalante the answer to a distressed educational system? “Savior” teachers like Olmos’s Escalante, Sidney Poitier in “To Sir with Love,” (1967) or Michelle Pfeiffer in “Dangerous Minds” (1995) all make for good drama. ...year old Jaime finding out that he is attracted to boys, and when a beautiful girls shows interest in him, he is all the more intrigued by her father’s work developing a new drug for gay people. Dr. Gomez tells Jaime, “People can be complicated. Desire can be confusing. Not for you? Consider yourself lucky” (Klise 3). The pivotal moment in this novel is when Jaime finally understands that no pill will cure homosexuality. He finally understands that there is other homosexual people in the world and that it is okay to be gay. When Jaime starts high school, he has a simple strategy to survive: fit in, keep a low profile and most importantly protect his biggest secret, he’s gay. Jaime does not think that being gay is normal and when he starts noticing his attraction for boys, he tries to stop it no matter what. He thinks that the world is not okay with gay people and he does not want to be judged for who he is, he just wants a simple life. Jaime says, “Gay is the word my best friend uses to describe the essays we are assigned” (7). This quote shows how the way society uses words like “gay” is wrong. We never really know how a person is going to take what we say, and this quote clearly shows how Jaime thinks is wrong to be gay because of how the word gay is used in his school. Not being able to like Celia Gomez, the most beautiful, funny and smart girl in school frustrates Jaime. Dr. Gomez, Celia’s father, is creating a new drug that can cure homosexuality. When Jaime steals the...

...them together and keep them stronger. You would become the best person you could ever be because of the person you love. Also, if you truly love someone, you will have respect and faith with one another. 2.) Cite situations in the film which reflects the element of true love. When Landon met and fell in love with Jaime, everything about Landon has changed. He became a better person because of Jaime. He stopped doing pranks to others with his naughty friends. He started to forgive and accept his father. He granted Jaime's wishes like getting a tattoo and marrying at the same church where her parents got married. He even saved Jaime from humiliation. In these situations, it is evident that true love will bring out the best in every person. Also, element of true love is reflected during the time when Landon discovered that Jaime is sick. Through ups and downs, he was always there for and never left Jaime. Even until the last days of Jaime, Landon did everything to express his unconditional love for her. He took care of her at the hospital, asked for his father's help for Jaime's sake, made a telescope so they could see the sky together, learned to dance Jaime well and even married her. 3.) What lessons can you derive from the movie? What I've learned from the movie is that we should always have faith and respect to the person we love. We should always believe in the goodness of one another. Being truly in love is not only being with the person you love during the happiest...

...Viewers will no doubt know exactly what scene I mean. In the Great Sept, next to the dead body of their first born son, Jaime Lannister rapes his sister, the mother of his three children. Immediately after this scene aired, fans were at their keyboards crying foul. Jaime Lannister would never! That’s not how it happened in the book! How could they? I had waited anxiously for that scene. In the books, it was the first time Jaime and Cersei were reunited since he went off to war. It was an emotional, passionate, and bloody (period sex, fuck yeah) reunion. I assumed it wouldn’t happen since Jaime returned early on the show’s timeline and their reunion was less than enthusiastic. I was wary when they revealed that Jaime has been back for two weeks on the show’s timeline and they still hadn’t had sex. In the books, they were fucking within a matter of minutes. “Hurry,” she was whispering now, “quickly, quickly, now, do it now, do me now. JaimeJaime Jaime.” Her hands helped guide him.“Yes,” Cersei said as he thrust, “my brother, sweet brother, yes, like that, yes, I have you, you’re home now, you’re home now, you’re home.” She kissed his ear and stroked his short bristly hair. Jaime lost himself in her flesh. He could feel Cersei’s heart beating in time with his own, and the wetness of blood and seed where they were joined. Imagine my surprise when Jaime shows up to visit Cersei in the Sept then. Excitement stole through me. They were going to be true to the story after all...

But there is also a lot that is different as well. Not only is there similarities and difference among each parent but there also seemed to be with different children. In the introduction I introduced a few of the other children that are in the families. Rikki explained that she has to discipline each of her children just a little bit differently because one understands not to do where the other one just does not quite get it yet as she is only 1.5. Where Jordan’s time out is long (because she is older) then Morgan’s (because she is younger). “You cannot expect too much from your 1.5-year-old”-Rikki. Meghan explains the same thing in her interview where Tate is more calm and collective where Blake-Kennedy is a little spit fire. Jaime on the other hand was different between these two other families because Rikki and Meghan both allow spankings in their family. Where Jaime does not because she thinks that it is a short term consequence and she...
