Jane Goodall was born on April 3, 1934, in London, England. Her father, Mortimer Herbert Goodall, was a businessperson as well as a motor-racing enthusiast; her mother, Margaret Myfanwe Joseph, wrote many novels under the name Vanne Morris Goodall. She had one sibling, a sister named Judy. Jane’s fascination with animals and their behavior began in her early childhood. In her free time, she took thorough notes and sketches regarding her observations of the behavior of native birds and animals; in addition to this, she read extensively in the literature of zoology and ethology. From an early age, she dreamt of traveling to Africa to extend her observations to the exotic animals found there.Related image

She imitated them in order to observe what was unknown. By remaining in nearly constant contact with them, she discovered a number of previously unwitnessed behaviors. Along with many other things, she noted that chimpanzees have a complex social system; this incorporates ritualized behavior and primitive yet recognizable ways of communication. They have even created a “language” of more than 20 individual sounds. Goodall is also credited with the first recorded observations of chimpanzees making tools and even using them to eat meat;in addition to this, grass was used to form spoons. Prior to her discovery, tool making was used as a way to distinguish humans from animals. She also noted that chimpanzees throw stones as weapons, use embraces and touch to comfort, and have developed long-term family bonds. They have also established a “caste” system, placing dominant males at the top; this is usually determined by the male’s entrance performance at the feedings and gatherings. Until Goodall’s observations, ethologists had long believed chimpanzees to be exclusively vegetarian; she, however witnessed them stalking, killing, and eating birds, large insects, and some bigger animals. On one occasion, she even recorded acts of cannibalism.Image result for jane goodallImage result for jane
