In J.D. salinger’s novel the catcher in the rye, Holden caulfield encounters various examples of profanity but the irony is that Holden himself curses quite often throughout the entire book. A great example of this is when Holden is talking to his younger sister Phoebe and keeps cursing again and again even after she says “stop swearing” multiple times on page 191 in chapter 22. Although he doesn’t like it when other people swear in front of children he doesn’t even seem to notice doing it himself. He is too caught up in his own head to care. He curses so much in front of adults that i believe it's just become the way that he speaks. The age of his listener doesn’t even seem to cross his mind. This comes as a surprise as he becomes as holden
