The book Jesus’ Son is a collection of short stories by Denis Johnson published in 1992. An excerpt that helps to convey the main argument the book seeks to make about addiction comes from the story “Work,” from the bottom of page 63 until page 66. An element from this genre that helped to convey the “truth” of the book in this excerpt was the limited description of character and setting. Additionally, the use of first person narrative throughout the book serves to give the reader an experience that conveys the point of the book in terms of addiction in a way that one writing in third person would have trouble doing. It talks about addiction being a coping mechanism that can be helped with a change of environment, and that one’s own power may be employed to fight it. This is similar to the many ideas the speaker in “Work” expresses in the excerpt discussed above. In the random moment of happiness the he experiences, the narrator is able to toss aside all of what makes him sad and revel in what he experiences in that moment, which is a night of drinking. It’s clear that he feels he and the people at the Vine are coping with their life experiences, and this enabling mentality takes place in an environment full of similar people. Furthermore, the idea that everything was perfect for the speaker in that moment also reflects the idea that recovery is done by one’s own power, which can only come when they are ready. It seems that the speaker is capable of experiencing multiple moments of clarity, and the next one he could possibly have, could be one that leads him to
