Lawnmowers and I do not get along. Why do you ask? First of all, they tire you out and are complicated. Lawnmowers are very dangerous machines if they are not used carefully. After going through this devastating tragedy of getting my fingertip sliced open to the bone, I learned not to stick my finger in a lawnmower. My experience started at seven in the morning. I could hear my mother yelling at me to get up and cut the grass. I layed down in the bed for a little while longer; finally I got up and went outside to get prepared to cut the grass. As I was about to start, I looked at the yard and said, “I’m never going to be finished with this yard”. After mowing for about five minutes, the lawnmower starting cutting off due to the wet grass clogging up the blade. I had to reach my hand in the blades to remove the wet grass. After about two minutes, I had to get the wet grass out again. The third times the charm because when I reached in to clear the blades, I left the lawnmower on. I reached my hand back to far because the blades sliced my fingers to the bone. First, I took off my shirt to tend to the wound. Then, I ran in the house to tell my mom. By the time I made it to my mother, my shirt was all bloody and I had to get a towel. About a minute later, we were on our way to the hospital.

Next, I started my painful journey to the hospital. The ride seemed so long and I was in so much pain. I kept thinking that I was going to lose my finger because I was losing so much blood. After a minute or so, my body starting shaking and then it went numb. It took us about fifteen to twenty minutes to make it to the hospital. We walked in and they made my mother fill out a lot of paper work. I was in the waiting room bleeding to death. It took the nurse another fifteen minutes to call me in to see the doctor. When I made it to the room, it took the doctor another twenty minutes to come in and stitched me up. He told me that I fractured the bone in the tip of my finger. So he gave me a shot on both sides of my finger. A minute later, my finger was so swollen I could not even bend it. The shot numbed my finger and it made it easier for him to stitch my finger back together. After the stitches, the doctor put a splint on my finger to keep it aligned. I made it home around twelve in the evening. I went into my room and tried to go to sleep. It was very challenging because I had to sleep with my hand up; if I didn’t the blood would ease out. It took about two months for my finger to heal completely. I missed a lot of basketball practices. I learned that sticking my finger in a running lawnmower can really injure someone. I also learned that if a person goes to the hospital and have an injury like mine they will have to wait for a while. It also gave me time to think about the stupid mistake I made.
After this near death experience, I have changed in many ways. I am very careful with all kinds of blades, especially those on lawnmowers. I do not use pushing lawnmowers anymore; we recently purchased a riding lawnmower. I am also more aware of my surroundings and things that could potentially be dangerous.
Being the careful person that I now am, I am no longer afraid of lawnmowers. I have not stuck my finger in anymore lawnmowers. I truly learned from this devastating experience.
