...FINDER I love the idea of using the Greek word for Finder as the main character’s name… maybe that could even work into the title? The headlines are talking. They say that there are only an estimated 6000 Followers left worldwide and about 10 percent of them may be found in North America. China claims to have wiped them out altogether, while India believes that they can be rehabilitated. Those headlines were from two days ago blaring through my Blue Tooth and YAHWEH alone knows how many of us are left. But after 80 - 100 years of persecution, since the Government’s war on the Followers, we’ve learned how to hide in plain sight. It takes a lot more money living in The Cities than in the communes where I was raised. But after they found our camp, about forty people strong, maybe 34 of us all told were BORNAGAINSAVED. The others were people we’d find on the road hungry, alone, broken; designated appointments from YAHWEH – well after they found our camp . . . well, I’ve been living in cities since then. They called us something else then, but the name has been lost. Now they just call us walking dead or religious trash. Either way it’s all the same. If they catch us, then it’s the Big Show: no ifs, ands, or but’s. Even on the news feeds, we’re “they,” or “suspects,” or “fanatics” and never our names. We’re the nameless ones. That’s how we can tell true Followers from the government plants they keep sending us. You can tell by the scars we carry. Many of us grow our hairs...

...Betty Bates AC1300186 Introduction to Ecology Assignment 8 The Northern Spotted Owl Habitat vs. Logging Interests in the Pacific Northwest The Northern Spotted Owl (Strix Occidentalis Courina) likes to live in older forest growths. It is often thought of as the medium sized owl, but in reality, it is the largest owl in North America. Spotted owls do their hunting at night. The spotted owl’s diet consists mainly of small rodents, other birds and reptiles, but have been seen feeding on cairns, and insects. Owls are usually found in California and the Pacific North West in the United States, where they live in old forest growths. (The Defenders of Wild Life). They will not tolerate habitat “disturbance” and are very protective of their territory in which they live, and hunt. Owls prefer tall trees with broken tops where they can fly under and past these broken tops, where they like to nest and raise their young. The Northern spotted owl is a protected species. Due to extensive logging, the owls and their habitat is swiftly declining at an alarming rate; they were added to the endangered species list in the early “1990s” (The Defenders of Wildlife). Unfortunately, the habitat they prefer is a direct target for the logging industry the cutting of trees in their habitat, conversion of land, wind storms, and wildfires have decreased their numbers“( example: 100 pair in British Columbia, 1200 pair in Oregon, 560 pair in Northern California, and 500 pair...

...It goes without saying that human beings find beauty in all things rare. We covet uniqueness, scarcity and anything special. This does not exclude the many threatened and endangered species in the U.S. The Northern spotted owl is one of those precious gems. As its population declines due to deforestation, conservationists fight the timber industry. However, pointing fingers at Pacific Northwest loggers, Americans who work hard for their families, doesn’t seem to be solving the crisis. Spotted owls make their homes within the old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest. Massive trees, (cedars, firs, hemlocks and spruces to name a few), sink their roots deep into the soil. These aging trees serve to prevent landslides, erosion and give homes to the many forest creatures. 150 years of logging has left a mere ten percent of these forests. Fewer trees mean fewer spotted owls. Forced to live in “cluster habitats”, or small pieces of protected forest, young owls have little territory to disperse to and their survival rate has dropped. “If habitat destruction is halted soon, there will therefore be some owls left after 100 or even 200 years, barring other catastrophes ( Doak, 1989.)” Throughout Washington and Oregon about 2,500 to 3,000 pairs of Northern spotted owls still reside in old growth. Their numbers continue to plummet. The Pacific Northwest depends greatly upon independent and large timber companies. As a whole, the multi-billion dollar industry eradicates 125,000 acres...

...The move to classify the Northern Spotted Owl as an endangered species in light of the critical new findings was a controversial one, as listing the owl under the ESA would prevent much of the Northwest forests from being used by the timber industry. Agencies such as the Forest Service and BLM struggled to accommodate both the owl and those dependent on timber production, having to adjust policy plans “to satisfy the criteria of the NFMA and NEPA” (Layzer 2012, 190). The conflicts that arose between science and policy revealed a marked contrast in values: those in management and government largely prioritized jobs and the timber economy over conservation. The environmental laws and regulations would allow for the NWFP to be developed, creating stricter guidelines on how forests...

...The Northern spotted owl vs. Logging interest in the Pacific Northwest The rich ecosystem of the old growth forest provides a home for the Northern spotted owl, and a habitat for the owl’s primary prey. However, these same towering trees of cedars and firs which serve as the owls’ habitat, is also the primary source of a multi-billion dollar logging industry. However, if the forest is destroyed due to logging, the Northern spotted owl will lose its habitat. The Northern spotted owl has been on the rapid decline, with over half of the population being wiped out. The old growth forest, the home of the spotted owl, has become a huge income earning logging industry that has created jobs for thousands of workers. As a result of logging, approximately only 10% of the original forest remains intact leaving limited space for the already dwindling number of the owls in the region. In response to this decline, environmentalist petitioned the US Fish and Wildlife Service to place the owl on the endangered species list, arguing that as an indicator species, the northern spotted owl is a gauge of the health of the forest that provides its habitat. Since the main threat to the spotted owl is habitat loss due to logging, the US government declared the owl as a threatened species in 1990, a move which was vehemently opposed by the timber industry, as millions of acres of Pacific Northwest forest was protected to help slow or even reverse the decline in owl numbers...

...Forest Fragments – Assignment Questions The ‘Forest Fragments’ Assignment is an individual assignment, completed and submitted individually to the dropbox PART II: Data Interpretation (9 marks) Examine the data you collected and the calculations you made to answer the following questions: 2.1 What extra information is included in the Shannon’s Diversity Index (vs. richness), and how is this information useful? Why would a scientist use Shannon’s Diversity Index in addition to a richness value? (2 marks) Shannon’s Diversity Index accounts for not only the number of species in a habitat (species richness) but also the evenness of the species within that same habitat. A scientist would use Shannon’s Diversity Index in addition to a richness value because the richness value does not depict the evenness of the habitat, whereas Shannon’s Diversity Index shows both the species richness and the evenness. 2.2 Compare the richness value for your plot with the richness value based on the data collected from all the groups in your Seminar section. Now compare the richness value based on the data collected from all the groups in your Seminar section to the richness value for the entire Dairy Bush (found in the spreadsheet). Explain why these three richness values might be different. (2 marks) The richness value for my plot was a lot less than the richness value collected for my seminar section. The richness value for my seminar section was less than the richness value for...

...upon himself to fight Tybalt. From then, Mercutio and Tybalt drew out their swords and began to fight. They fought until Tybalt had killed Mercutio. Another member of the Montague’s was spotted at the scene of this event by the name of Benvolio Vicinato. He told reporter, Rachel Walker that Romeo was seen trying to stop the fight which caused Tybalt to kill Mercutio. He told reporters that Romeo was so enraged at the fact that Mercutio had died that he fought against Tybalt. Reporters say that Romeo had killed Tybalt during the fight. “Romeo is not the kind of person to fight against anyone, especially someone like Tybalt. It was a shock to see that he had killed Tybalt”, said Benvolio. According to an eye witness at the scene of the crime, Capulet and Lady Capulet had arrived to see what had happened. Lady Capulet saw her dear nephew dead and told Capulet to banish whoever was responsible for the death. After much investigation, police had found out that Romeo had killed Tybalt and that Tybalt had killed Mercutio. Therefore it was said that Capulet had declared Romeo to be banished from the streets of Verona and to never show his face again. “I am sick and tired of this insane behaviour! I do not understand why this dreadful hatred has to continue. Since Romeo killed Tybalt, a dear nephew of mine, I proclaim that Romeo is banished from Verona grounds. And if he is to come back I will have...

...Dear Mr. Palshaw: Hello, my name is Derrick and I am a student here at Carmel High School. As you probably know, I am a huge New York Yankees fan. They are the best team in the whole Majors, and there is no doubting that fact. I understand from one of my peers that you are a Boston Red Sox fan, as I had also seen your Red Sox magnet on your whiteboard. The idea of a Yankee fan and Red Sox fan co-existing in a classroom setting is just a preliminary result of past encounters between the two franchises. I hope that we can look past these abundant differences and carry-on with our positions at CHS; you as a teacher and me as a student. However, if there is an occurrence in the future of the Yankees losing horrendously, I will be forced to bring up the fact that they have been spotted at number one most of the year, have forty American League Pennants, and twenty-seven World Championship Trophies. Oh, and will most likely be going for another one this year, unlike Boston. But enough about baseball, that will end up with a fight and I know how much you love fighting over plagiarism. I was born August 10, 1995 in San Diego California. I lived here in the Monterey Peninsula until March 24th, 2004 when we moved to the Hudson Valley of New York. My family moved back to California on December 29th of 2010 for my father’s work. My mother and father are divorced since 2000, and I have one sister named Grayson who is a sophomore here at CHS. As a student I tend to slack off, but I matured...

This particular year it was especially tough for Melvin to forage honey from the hives. The bees had grown stronger and the painful stings kept Melvin from obtaining honey. Melvin began to become depressed, longing for sweet, sweet tender honey. Growing hungrier and hungrier as the days rolled on Melvin began to have difficulty finding food and fending off his family from the vicious venomous snakes. One night Melvin woke in the mist of the night by a terrifying sliver of snakes all around his nest. As they did every night the snakes tried to break into the nest. Melvin held his dear family close in his arms and prayed as hard as he could to the great Gods of Olympus, in hope of living to see another day. The next day, the snakes moved on, without breaking into Melvin’s threshold. It was only a matter of time before the walls of his nimble house would give in to the strength of the snakes. Melvin decided, for the sake of his family’s survival, that he had to speak to Zues, the Great God of the Animal Kingdom, to urge him to restore balance to living things. After a brief goodbye and a quick kiss on the check from Betsy Melvin ventured to Greece. After 12 days of trekking through sands and swimming through waves Melvin finally arrived in the distant lands of Greece. Melvin marched right into the Olympus Palace and demanded...

...Tuesday14th January 14 Dear Sharma and Ryan, My name is Emma Sainsbury and I work for a particular company that looks at new businesses financial information. If I find a problem with your financial information then I have to contact the company I also give advice what actions are available. I hope you agree with the problems that I suggest to you. The first problem that I am particularly worried about is the advertisement in January the cash flow says that you are going to spend £660 at the start of January which there is no problem with. Then in February all the way to December you have charged £160. This suggests you are spending too much money and then you are reducing the amount of profit you get. You could spend more money on your machinery so you get the update machinery. The other way I could suggest is to not have advertising and waiting to see if any of customers notice there is a new business or you could go outside into the High Street and promote your business that way by going up to customers saying “do you know there is a new business in Hatters Lane”. This then will promote your business in a way that will cost you no money at all to do. I think that this technique will improve your cash flow hugely all this will require is effort and determination. The second problem I have with your cash flow is that you cash purchases they go up every three months this could have an impact on the business as the cash keeps going up and you do not seem to be...
