...repentance. In Jonah chapter 2 we as a group had to answer three questions. Our first question was how many prayers are mentioned in the book of Jonah, chapter 2. Second, when and where did Jonah pray the prayer. Lastly, was the fish a means of judgment or salvation. For our first question, “how many prayers are mentioned in Jonah 2”, the Bible says in Jonah 2:1, “Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God.” Again it said he “prayed” not Jonah’s prayers. Also, as you read through the chapter you do not have any breaking points through the prayer showing any indication that there is more than one prayer. We believe...

...to Jonah I would very much like to start off by bringing in some facts about Jonah, whom was a prophet of God and the son of Amittai. Jonah was written between 793 and 753 B.C. and was written near Jerusalem. The author of Jonah is he himself; although throughout my research other theological scholars say the author of Jonah is unknown because it was written in third person. However, I disagree because there are other books in the bible written in third person and the authors are writing about their selves. First, I am going to write about the background of the Book of Jonah. The book of Jonah is quite interesting because it has some major themes and several purposes; it is also a short book in the bible that only has four chapters. The recipients of this book would be primarily to Israel, but it as well could be to any individual because we can all relate to the book of Jonah. I am certain that there are individuals that have several of the characteristics of Jonah, being that we all can be disobedient, bitter, resentful, and prideful at times. According to author Hyun Chul Paul Kim, that wrote Jonah Read Intertextually believes that out of all the other twelve Minor Prophets, Jonah has been the one who has been neglected, because people in general refer to him as the prophet that was swallowed by a big fish, because he was stubborn. The Book of Jonah Outline 1. Jonah flees from the Lord. ( 1:1-17) 2. Jonah is delivered from the fish. (2:1-2:10) 3. Jonah obeys...

...baseless. In fact, the story is so improbable that it has been relegated to the status of a children’s story by all accounts. The tale comes from the Book of Jonah in the Old Testament and is simply known to the modern world as “Jonah and the Whale.” Sadly, the story, while good, contains two fundamental flaws; one flaw based in science the other based in meaning. While most stories in the bible are symbolic in nature, this particular one really stretches the boundaries of the imagination. Jonah, a minor prophet, was ordered by God to go to the city of Nineveh and preach to the residents about their shortcomings in the eyes of the Lord. Jonah decided against going and instead tried to escape to another city by ship to avoid his task. While at sea, a terrible storm descended upon the ship Jonah was on. Instead of praying to God for the ships survival like the other shipmates, Jonah went below deck and fell asleep. Upon seeing Jonah sleeping, the captain of the ship woke Jonah up and begged him to pray because maybe his God would be the one to save them. Since their prayers fell on deaf ears, the crew decided to cast lots (draw straws) in order to possibly find out who among them brought this terrible ordeal. Jonah drew the short straw and explained to the crew that he was fleeing a task set upon him by God. Jonah, sensing the fear of his shipmates, asked to be thrown overboard...

...apparently a quality we should have. I found three places where personal responsibility was used and not used. School, work and the Bible. We will take a closer look at them and decide why it is good to take personal responsibility. In collage, no one tells you when to get to class, when assignments are do, or when to study for a test. It is your personal responsibility to do those things. If you don’t, your school yeah will not be as great as you want it. If that means instead of going to a party the night before a big (or small) test, then be it. If you have relied on your parents and teachers for your whole life, then what will you do when it comes the time for you to leave, you won’t know what to do. I mean, it’s partly the parents fault for doing everything for you, but you could have taught yourself how to do simple things. If your parents don’t let go of the rope a little, how do they expect you accomplish anything. You have to be able to survive on your own. It’s a big world out there. Anyway, in collage, you have to be able to do almost about everything on your own. Sure, you will have your friends and teachers for guidance, but you have to have to personal responsibility to be able to do things and live in this harsh world. The next area with personal responsibility required in at your work. When at work, you usually have a boss, or something that tells you what you need to do. It is your responsibility to make sure those things get done. There are many reasons why you must...

...Dustin King Professor Dark English 2301 April 2, 2012 Culture The culture values are very different in the poems that Han-Shan wrote and the story of Jonah that came out of the bible. They both believe that there is a higher being that will judge us but they both go about there life in many different ways. Fore the story from the bible they understand that we are going to sin and that we must do what God says. In the Buddhist poems it is more a sense of never do wrong and all that you do that is going to measure up to all of your faults . The cultural values that are visible in Han-Shan’s poems was that he was a firm believer in Buddhism but he was a follower of the southern branch of the Ch’an or Zen sect, which placed great emphasis upon individual effort and was less wary of emotionalism than earlier Buddhism had been. Watson states, “… as a result Han-Shan’s poetry has little of the tone of dry bland understatement that we see in other poets of Buddhism background. (Watson) Han-Shan’s poems are mostly about a place he supposedly lived which was called Cold Mountain. Buddhist’s try to be one with everything around them and to not fault anything. He speaks of nature and speaks fully in metaphor. “The valleys are long and strewn with stones.’ Han- Shan goes on to say “Who can break from the snares of the world and sit with me among the white clouds.” (Han-Shan) Han-Shan is translated as Cold Mountain, which is also his key point in his poems. Zen Buddhism is...

...you are not, then go home!" Jonah said with a serious voice. "I'm ready, we have been planning this for over a month now, and we have all of our materials for this prank." Ben said in a ready voice. "Guys, what if we get in trouble, what if they find our fingerprints, what if they have security cameras, what if we get caught?" asked Bob in a troubled tone. Jonah, Ben and Bob have been the best students at Jalace High School for three years until one of their senior teachers decided to pick on them and try to get them in trouble for over five months and it worked 12 times. "That is why we have the gloves, the masks, the hoodies and different backpacks. They will...

...Identifying classical conditioning in life situations and biblical situations Chrystal Walker Liberty University Classical conditioning in life and biblical situations Classical conditioning is a type of learning in which one learns to link two or more stimuli and anticipate events (David Myers, comp Psychology 10th. Holland, Michigan: worth publishers, 2010.p268). Classical conditioning brings me to a time when my dad got me to take my cold medicine for a cold that I acquired from playing in the rain. Our normal family doctor was away on vacation, so my aunt suggested her children’s doctor. The doctor asked me what flavor of medicine I wanted; his options were bubble gum, cherry, and licorice. At that time and age I had no idea what licorice was, so I chose it.The doctor came back in with the medicine he gave it to my father and told him to give it to me every four to eight hours, and he could give me some right now as well. As the spoon got closer to my face I could smell the stench of rotten eggs. I guess my dad saw the look on my face and quickly shoved the spoon into my mouth. My eyes watered a lot and then came the vomit all over the place. From that day on licorice was not my friend. Comparing my experience with Ivan Pavlov’s experiments, I now know that my experience was a common case of classical conditioning. The neutral stimulus or (NS) was the doctor that my aunt suggested, because I had no prior...

...emerging; popping up and taking effect. And one of these specific philosophies was the idea of modernism, with things such as changes to education, and making education mandatory. The US was truly growing, arguably in a revolution, and in addition to these changes, Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution became big. As seen, the religious, specifically the fundamentalists, those who believed in the literal interpretation of the bible, extremely despised Darwin’s theory, and saw urban culture as wicked. This was shown as their hate eventually boiled into the Scopes Trial, the trial of John T. Scopes, a biology teacher charged with teaching the theory of evolution at a high school in Dayton, Tennessee, violating Tennessee’s Butler Act, which essentially prohibited the teaching of evolution in public schools. This trial garnered a lot of mainstream media attention with an informal atmosphere unlike a hearing in court, along with much of the trial involving personal attacks, deliberate and aggressive, and the brutal battles between science and religion, all signs of social discord. Therefore, the Scopes Trial revealed conflict and tension in the US during the 1920’s. The three big players in the Monkey Trial, a nickname for the Scopes Trial, were William Jennings Bryan, Clarence Darrow, and Charles Darwin, although his influence is more indirect. William Jennings Bryan was a three time Democratic presidential candidate, and an excellent orator, known very famously for his Cross of Gold...

...DAY 1 READ Exodus 33:7-11 • Psalm 27:4-6 • Luke 10:38-42 QuiET MoMEnTs CounT The LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young aide Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent. Exodus 33:11 Moses had a very close relationship with God. The Bible says that God spoke with him as a friend, resulting in amazing encounters, miracles, and powerful leadership on Moses’ part. Imagine the pressure Joshua must have felt in taking his place! But God has been training Joshua even at an early age. While he was still young, Joshua would not leave the tent where God’s presence was. This was the best kind of preparation for him—a consistent face-to-face encounter with God. When the time came, God would also do great wonders through Joshua and during his leadership. We, too, are called by God to do great things and the best way we can prepare for this is by having a strong relationship with Him. Our ability to share our faith, lead others to Jesus, and make disciples is fueled by a lifestyle of constantly hearing His voice and obeying His Word. There is no doubt that God has a mighty plan for this generation. The question is, will we be like Joshua and have fellowship with our mighty God who wants to do great things through us? REFLECT • Are you making a habit of connecting to God regularly and intimately? Is your time in the Word and in prayer consistent? • What are your greatest distractions when...

...THE GOAL 1 I come through the gate this morning at 7:30 and I can see it from across the lot: the crimson Mercedes. It's parked beside the plant, next to the offices. And it's in my space. Who else would do that except Bill Peach? Never mind that the whole lot is practically empty at that hour. Never mind that there are spaces marked "Visitor." No, Bill's got to park in the space with my title on it. Bill likes to make subtle statements. So, okay, he's the division vice-president, and I'm just a mere plant manager. I guess he can park his damn Mercedes wherever he wants. I put my Buick next to it (in the space marked "Controller"). A glance at the license as I walk around it assures me it has to be Bill's car because the plate says "NUMBER 1." And, as we all know, that's absolutely correct in terms of who Bill always looks out for. He wants his shot at CEO. But so do I. Too bad that I may never get the chance now. Anyway, I'm walking up to the office doors. Already the adrenalin is pumping. I'm wondering what the hell Bill is doing here. I've lost any hope of getting any work done this morning. I usually go in early to catch up on all the stuff I'm too busy to do during the day, because I can really get a lot done before the phone rings and the meetings start, before the fires break out. But not today. "Mr. Rogo!" I hear someone calling. I stop as four people come bursting out of a door on the side of the plant. I see Dempsey, the shift supervisor; Martinez, the union steward;...

There have been many changes, additions, and improvements during this time. Adventurer Ministry has shown huge growth as well. Youngsters in this age group are full of energy and get excited about being a part of an organization that is designed to expand their view of their world and strengthen their relationship with God, Mom, and Dad through ways that are so much fun. The roof over Adventurer Ministry is supported by several strong pillars. You hold in your hands one of them: the latest updated manual covering all 83 currently accepted Awards for use around the world. There is of course, one small problem: This area of Adventurer fun is not a static field of possibilities, it is a constantly growing—maybe almost exploding—source of activity. Therefore even at the time of this edition’s printing, there are already more Awards being...
