Abraham Joshua Heschel was a Polish-born theologian, educator, and philosopher who sought to build a modern philosophy of religion on the basis of ancient Jewish tradition. Heschel was the professor of Jewish beliefs. Abraham Heschel intended to create a modern philosophy of religion on the basis of ancient Jewish tradition and teachings. In traditional Jewish beliefs, Heschel observed an inner depth of love that sought out to bring humans into their faith. Heschel's concern for the belief of the individual involved him in the civil rights demonstrations. These demonstration were brought out to end discrimination against African Americans in the US. Heschel was one of the first religious leaders in the United States to speak out against the escalating war in Vietnam. Heschel also risked the hate of Jews by meeting with Pope Paul VI at the Vatican in Rome to discuss Jewish feelings concerning Vatican Council II. Heschel made Christians better by making them better people. Christians were encouraged in their own faith by his vision, words and actions. Anything of value in Christianity came from Judaism in the first place. Heschel had many productive and personal relationships with individual Protestants. Herschel was very close with the Roman Catholic Church. he would always set up meeting and just talk about how the Jews-Catholic relationship was thriving. If it kept going like this, that the world would be changed
