The Medieval Women Mystics summarizes Birgitta and Julian’s viewpoints on a variety of topics, from love to God’s presents. This reading selection provides a background of Julian of Norwich and Birgitta of Sweden, and their perception of faith. The story of Julian is that she had three desires: three spiritual wounds, great sickness, and to recollect the passion. Julian discussed various amounts of teachings through scripture, from the issue of sin to God’s love for all his creations. Julians wounds were full of compassion, contrition, and the longing for the Lord. She wanted to understand the rejection of the comforts of the earth to become cleansed. Birgitta recalls the judge questioning Jesus Christ to why man has senses if he may not act upon them. The following quote elaborates on why Jesus Christ replies that the purpose is for man to honor him. “Fifth, I gave you feet that you might draw back from love of the world and go to your soul’s rest and love and to me, your Creator and Redeemer.” Julian understands that God is full of mercy and answers prayers; she also describes God’s love and passion through her unorthodox prayer. The following quote states why she understands God’s will and how it is best for Julian. “Therefore I said: Lord, you know what I want. If it is your will, let me have it. But if it is not your will good Lord, do not be angry, for I want nothing that is not your will.” Julian shows her trust in the Lord’s love through the willingness of God’s own will over herself. God’s will for Julian is greater than anything anyone could ask for.
