...Workplace Communication Assessment Kenneth Bradberry Jack Welch Management Institute Professor Ardith Bowman JWI 505 October 26, 2014 Abstract Communications in a large company can be a challenge, especially when you have a very diverse organization with several business groups and leaders with different missions and values that drive their respective businesses. In order for any large company to maintain a competitive position, innovation is a critical practice that all business groups across the company must participate in and contribute ideas and resources. As a leader in the innovation team, my responsibility focuses on the communication and delivery of innovation tools and concepts that align with the overall company’s strategy as well as the respective business groups. I recently had to issue a communication to several of the business groups on a research initiative that could potentially create a very profitable business for my company and enter into a new market. When I was putting together my thoughts to create a communication to the executive leadership and the F&A group within the company, I had to pull from several different business and technical areas. Introduction Some of these areas I’m considered a subject matter expert, some I’m not, but I had to assemble a paper that addressed the all the elements of the opportunity and created a solid business and technical case for the company to invest a substantial amount of money to support...

...into a risk management plan. In addition, it will discuss the recommendation of three areas that as the new CEO of XYZ global financial services firm needs to focus and apply to influence the values of the firm and prevent a future crisis by creating a culture of candor, trust, and learning. Introduction Values are beliefs that people have about what is important or worthwhile to them. Values influence behavior because people seek more of what they value. As U.S. Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart concluded, “There is a difference between what you have a right to do, and what is right to do.” (JWMI 505, Wk 8, Lecture 1). Values therefore can be seen as the guideposts for behavior. As opposed to rules, which are always transmitted from the top down, values should be developed in a more participative way. (JWMI 505, Wk 8, Lecture 1). An individual’s values are in large part, derived from the social environment in which he or she lives. For example, in Western democracies, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are some of the things we value. Sharing a common...

In 2004, Garmin had a mere 250M in cash and equivalents and in 2012 it ended the year with 1.23B in cash equivalents. In general, its total current assets almost double between 2005 to 2006 from 801M to 1.17B, and again between 2006 and 2007 from 1.17 B to 2.33B. Since then, its assets dropped in 2008 to 1.98B and has since been steady at about 2.5B with a close in 2012 of 2.54B (WikiInvest, 2013). Considering this data...

From a humble local shop of basic household good, the company rose to its height. By 2002, the company was world’s largest retailer in furniture business. It had the sale volume of about $12 billion. Operating 154 stores in 22 countries, the company was serving 286 million customers a year. The company undoubtedly owed the epic success to the dynamic leadership of its founder. Kampard saw the opportunity ideal to offer good design products at low price meeting the need of majority of the population. He met resistance from his competitors by one mode or the other but overcame it by wisely dealing it. The company owned small and independent manufacturers of furniture to buy the stuff. Such purchases were low cost thereby benefiting the company and customers. An outlet opened in Stockholm in 1965 was built on a very large area located in the outskirts of the city it had ample space for car parking. The customers liked it as they were in the habits of coming in their cards. The showroom was self serviced. The sale items boar explanatory tickets while on display. Garmin’s balance sheet represents the snapshot of its financial position on the last day of the year. (Brigham & Ehrhardt, 2011). Throughout time, researchers have explored different methodologies on ways leaders perform. Daniel Goleman’s (2000) uses a format of six different styles that are interchangeable depending upon the climate. Others direct one towards qualities and emotional behaviors to get effective results. Whether it’s a style, quality, or emotional behavior, these methods have confirmed success in professional and personal atmospheres, analyzing strengths and weaknesses forms new ideas and approaches towards future leadership endeavors. I have reviewed some of my past experiences and applied Jack Welch’s principles and rules, concluding ways to handle situations implementing my leadership style, quality, and emotional behavior. The question now is “What works for you?” Keywords: styles, qualities, emotional behaviors Introduction What is a leader and how does he or she lead to fulfil a goal? This question is what researchers have been trying to discover for decades. There’s no one answer to identify how a leader achieves success. ...Team Dysfunction There are many reasons that this team is dysfunctional. Assessing Charles Moore’s leadership using Jack Welch’s eight essential rules makes be believe the first issue with this team is leadership. Charles was brought in to improve the division’s performance as it had been declining or several years. However, his leadership approach has not been successful and there is no indication that he intends to ake another approach. The issues that became apparent after reading this case was that the team does not trust Moore, let alone each other. There seems to be no candor or transparency. In addition, a leader spreads optimism and positive energy; this was missing in the meeting. His preference for group-based decisions makes me think that would not be able to make a quick decision without consulting others. He seems incapable of making a gut call and taking risks with is another action that a leader must be able to take. To lead a team like this the focus of the leader has to shift to relationships and developing team members. Moore has to be able to support this team and move away from managing a team and begin leading the team. Moore also has to be able to motivate and align people his team, which is crucial in getting a team and to buy-in to a strategy. Some of Moore’s actions, such as ignoring the conflict within the team, have been detrimental to establishing himself as a competent leader. Assessing the team as a whole, there is also the absence of trust...

The Division is headed by Charles Moore. Although Charles Moore was successful in leading teams he seemed to have major issues with this team of vice presidents. According to the Harvard Business Review Chattanooga Ice Cream Case the team was very dysfunctional; they exhibited a lack of trust, high in conflict, disrespectful of each other and exhibited avoidance issues with accountability. Team members seemed to always lay blame to other member. Moore needs to be more assertive in dismissing the ways of the past and the loss of Stay & Shop business needs to be put aside. Moore needs to convey that team cohesiveness is a must and this will go a long way to help ensure no further loss of business.
