Within the military context, the alpha of the crew or team is easily distinguishable: it’s the member with the highest rank and normally the most experience. Within the civilian context, this can sometimes be more difficult to establish. But as a leader of a team, the ways you can instill safety into the team is by ensuring their concerns are remediated quickly, by training and walking with your team members every day, and by ensuring they improve to a level of competency expected by the rest of the members. You can also provide an open and safe environment where members can raise concerns and issues without the fear of being condemned. The Three C’s of Trust had already been established through years of seeing and being part of the training within the crew. As an individual on board that crew, I knew that all members were extremely competent in their roles, were compassionate in their views toward each other and me, and had shown continuous congruency in every aspect of their actions and behaviors. Not in detail, but they had built enough congruency to know that they could be trusted. The radar operators was proficient in that skill, I as the navigator was proficient in that skill, and the pilots were proficient in that skill. There was no way that a pilot would know more about the radar than the radar operator, and there was no way that the navigator knew more about the flight controls than the pilot did; that was never in question. But each had the ability and the right to ask, question, and enquire into the facets of each skill when it related to the big-picture events. When I as the navigator asked the radar operator to clear the track, it was a standard procedure, but it was also the way that I could ask the radar operator to update me—and was asked by me as a “check question.” This was enough to have him alter what he was doing to clear the track. When the captain asked the crew what the outcome was and if the track was clear, that too was a standard procedure and a question that needed to be answered.
