Kenneth Bancroft Clark
I chose Kenneth because; the Brown vs. Board of Education always interested me. Brown vs. Board of Education ended legal segregation of schools in 1954. Kenneth completed the “Doll Study” for the case. He studied the responses of more than 200 Black children who were given a choice of white or brown dolls (Kenneth B. Clark). With the dolls there was one white one with yellow hair and one black one with black hair. He found that African American children showed racism for white dolls from as early as three. So, this showed that segregation in schools was psychologically damaging. This is important to me because without segregation I would grow to hate people…show more content… He studied political science at Howard University in 1935 and was a part of Kappa Alpha Psi. He later attended Columbia University, where he earned a PhD in psychology in 1940(Changing the Conversation). He was the first black president of the American Psychological Association. Also, he was the first black man to receive a PhD from Columbia University. In 1946, him and his wife founded the Northside Center for Child Development and reported out the psychological effects of school segregation. Kenneth had many accomplishments during his lifetime. In 1966, Kenneth helped found organizations for youth and was named the first black member of the New York State Board of Regents (Columbia). Also, he had five books out before his death and all of his books focused on African American struggles. In conclusion, Kenneth Clark had a good impact on psychology. He proved that no matter what race you are you can achieve things. Also, he showed that segregation in the learning environment only does psychological damage rather than helping them improve. He showed that segregation only can create hate in a child rather than love and socializing outside their skin
