1. What is your analysis of the past glass supply practices?
In the past, Kettering Industries Inc. (KII) produced baseed on custom orders. Therefore, the windows were manufactured and shipped in the same day to reduce work-in-process inventory. Low energy glass accounted for 22% of the plant’s vinyl window production, increasing monthly. Last year, purchased $1.15 million of clear and lowe energy glass from four suppliers in blocks of 40 sheets for 4mm and 50 sheets for 3 mm glass. Order quantities were determined by historical usage forecasts and sales forecasts. These were ordered by the truckload from 8 to 18 blocks. Inventory has a capacity of 32 blocks. During peak periods 6 blocks were required per day and 13 blcoks were required per day in the off-season. KII orders obsure glass as required. 2. Please analyze and compare the quotes in detail.
Kettering Industries Inc. has a 20 year relationship with Ross industries. They sell 3mm glass at $.3278/sq ft/blk for a minimum order quantity of 12 blocks. If the order quantity is less than that, it is $.33. This requires a one week lead time. KII has a three year relationship with Clear View Distributors. They provide mixed trucks with a minimum of eight blocks. KII has a 15 year relationship with Travers Glass Ltd. They are used as a backup. They provide the lowest delivered price at $.3172/sq ft/blk with a minimum order quantity of 12. The quote for 4 mm clear glass is $.4389 and $0.6734 for 3mm blocks and $0.9512 for 4mm blocks. They also respond the quickest with a two to three day lead time. Jackson glass company provides 3 mm blocks at $.33 with a minimum order quantity of 6 blocks and 4 mm blocks at $.44. However, their low energy glass still requires approval. They also require a one week lead time.

3. Do you think it might be possible to achieve a 30-35 turnover rate on raw material glass?

4. What short- and long-term actions would you take for glass at KII and why? Please explain in detail each.
