Kinsey

1) Against his father's approval, Alfred Kinsey went to college to study Biology. Since he was a young boy, he found himself infatuated with nature. He stated in the movie, “I am never alone, I’m surrounded by friends”. This quote was directed to the friendship he built with nature. Being outdoors also taught him to trust his own judgment. Kinsey’s younger years really helped shape the person he grew up to be. Without his father’s support, he got himself a partial scholarship and saved money from boy scouts. He spent the next 20 years in college studying. After schooling himself, he became a professor. Kinsey had a great fascination with collecting and studying Gall Wasp. He had a huge collection reaching over a million, which he measured and kept record of.

2) Kinsey started to explore sexually after marrying his former student, Clara McMilen. In the beginning of their marriage, sex was a big problem for them. It was very uncomfortable for Mrs. Kinsey and neither of them got great pleasure from it. In order to keep his marriage from failing, Kinsey took his wife to see a specialist. After the meeting with the Doctor, it was on like Donkey Kong. They were not shy of sex and embraced it. I believe this was the start of Kinsey study on Human Sexuality. He started to give advice to his students in his office about sex. Kinsey became very intrigued with the questions and lack of knowledge students had about sex. Not much research was known about Human Sexuality so Kinsey took matters into his own hands.

3) Kinsey used a variety of methods to conduct his research. He began training his researcher by having them interview himself and his wife. He went through a series of questions and behaviorisms to make show his researchers what was right and wrong. He wanted people to feel comfortable when they spoke about sex. Considering the time, sex was

Kinsey Review

...In the movie, Kinsey, it was obvious that society had a lack of knowledge about sex and about people’s sexual activities. Alfred Kinsey changed the way that people thought about sex. He did an important and monumental thing informing people and answering people’s questions about sex. At one point in the movie it showed Kinsey reading a script from the bible where boys were supposed to control their nocturnal emissions, a natural and uncontrollable act of puberty, or they would be looked down upon by God. A quote from the movie “it is the lord’s work to help youth fight and resist temptation.” I agree with the movie in that the more a behavior is prohibited the more strongly it becomes desired. (add more here) Moral beliefs are still present today, however the norm has changed. Before the norm was that children were expected to follow the beliefs and religious group of their parents. Today people are freer in their choice to belong to a faith, which changes the way that we as a society deal with sexuality. As time passes each generations beliefs stray further and further from the original norm. The more liberal we become as a society the more accepting and less prescriptive we become of diversity in sexuality. Technology advances have also had a huge impact on people’s ability to access information about sex. It was difficult for people to discuss their sexual experiences face to face in the interviews on the movie. Today research on what people are doing sexually...

Kinsey Movie Review

...I found the movie Kinsey to be both true to his work and to the essence of this dedicated man. Besides being highly entertaining, it was very relevant today to an audience, which had no idea who Alfred Kinsey was, or how his work had impacted their lives. Anyone who sees this movie will get to experience first hand how ignorant and misinformed people were about sex when Kinsey began studying human sexuality. Examples of this were the stated belief that performance of oral sex would reduce a woman's fertility, as well as most of the clichés about masturbation. These seem ridiculous to us now, but before Kinsey, they were considered common knowledge. When I saw the film, I laughed at such misleading ideas, while becoming aware of just how much pain, suffering, and loss of intimacy this misinformation caused. The film accurately portrayed how much people love to talk about and want to know about sex, if they feel free enough to ask and explore. The film made a meaningful contribution in bringing out the natural joy about sex that people can experience, even in an age of severely repressed and misleading sexual knowledge. Towards the end of the movie two superb scenes had significant emotional impact on me. Kinsey's final interviewee demonstrated how Kinsey, even after he was emotionally beaten down from scornful criticism, had made a significant difference in people's lives. The interviewee, in giving her sex history to Dr. Kinsey, showed just how far people had come in Kinsey's...

Alfred Kinsey

...Alfred Kinsey is recognized as the first person to explore sexuality from a scientific perspective. He began this examination while studying gall wasp mating patterns and later extended his work to human subjects. At the time of Kinsey’s study looked deep into sexual activity like masturbation and oral sex, which at the time was frowned upon. The social norm during the time period that Kinsey was doing research was that individuals should save themselves for marriage. Kinsey used in-depth, face-to-face interviews by highly trained interviewers. When he published Sexual Behavior in the Human Male it was conducted of a sample size of 5300 white males. When he published Sexual Behavior in the Human Female it was conducted of a sample size of 5940 white females. The majority of the male and female participants were younger white adults with some college education. Alfred Kinsey did a variety of topics from anal sex to sadomasochism. A few examples from the Kinsey’s...

The people in the 1960s had were much more sexually liberated than those in the earlier part of the century. Great Works of Alfred Kinsey

...The Great Works of Alfred Kinsey Alfred Kinsey was one of the first scientists to conduct scientific inquiries into human sexuality. During the thirties and forties, the time of his scientific explorations, human sexuality was not an accepted topic for discussion and was frowned upon. Over time, Kinsey’s work led to a wider acceptance of the topic as well as the acceptance of various sexual practices. To some, his work remains controversial and contentious. Those who oppose Kinsey’s work referred to him as a communist and even a pedophile, although there was never any evidence to support either claim. He was also criticized by other scientists for unreliability of personal accounts of sexual behavior. Despite all of the accusations against Kinsey, his work is still academically cited and respected and “beyond the scientific circles, he is seen by some as a liberator of sexuality, and by others as a founding father of America's moral decline (Soylent Communications).” In the beginning stages of his career, Kinsey was a well-known biologist and a zoologist. He mainly researched and documented the mating practices of animals and he specialized in that of the gall wasp. Dozens of the species were actually catalogued by Kinsey himself. In 1938, his interest of animal mating practices shifted to the mating practices of humans. He was able to gain the permission to teach a non-credit course called “Marriage” to nearly one hundred students at Indiana University. This was completely...

Historical and Scientific Perspectives on Homosexuality

...There are many different perspectives on gay male and lesbian sexual orientations. Gay male and lesbian sexual orientation is commonly referred to as being homosexual. A homosexual is a male and or female that is attracted to the same sex. Homosexuality is the term used to define sexual orientation of homosexuals that engage in sexual activities with the same sexes. Homosexuality is widespread throughout history including the past, present, and future generations and varies widely amongst societies and cultural acceptances. In some cultures and religions homosexuality is accepted and tolerated. Whereas, in other cultures and religions it is found to being condemning and dirty. Some even think of the individual as being in a sick state of mind. It is because of these different historical and scientific perspectives that are being placed on homosexuals minds are what shape their perceptions of themselves. In historical perspectives western cultures have never censured any sexual practices or orientations more than the male and male and female and female orientations. The sexual behaviors have varied per religion and past cultures of what is accepted and what is not. In ancient Greece it was common and accepted for males to have sexual relationships with other males, sometimes even boys. It was thought as soon as the young man grew a beard it was time to start the male-male sexual behavior. Greek vases displaced artwork of men having sexual relations to boys by placing their...

Theories of Counseling

...What Other Cultures Can Teach Us about Sexuality By Zach Daly Professor D Human Sexuality Final Paper Sexuality is an interesting concept, and when examined clearly has a relationship to cultural rules and norms. What is considered acceptable and appropriate sexual behavior varies significantly according to cultural rules, though some sexual taboos and norms seem to cross cultural lines. The fact that cultural norms impact what sexual behaviors are considered appropriate or inappropriate is significant, because many people argue that certain variants of sexuality are either natural or unnatural. However, if some sexual behavior was inherently unnatural, one would not expect to find sexual behavior that is considered aberrant in some cultures as a normative behavior in other cultures. In fact, it is this diversity of “normal” sexual behavior that is the most informative aspect of learning about sexual behavior in other cultures, because it helps explain that what is considered deviant in some cultures is considered normal in other cultures. Of course, examining diverse cultural sexual norms does not mean that all abnormal sexual practices should be embraced as elements of cultural diversity. The fact that a behavior might be considered normative and may be adapted to further cultural norms does not mean that the behavior is necessarily positively adaptive. For example, child brides are the norm in many cultures. The practice of permitting child brides serves...

Sexual Health

...Journal #3 Human Sexuality In class we discussed the term Sexual Health. I was struck by the notion that I had no real working idea of what this term means. At first, I thought of course it refers to healthy sex. Truly, what I was feeling was I had know real concept of what it means when one refers to the term sexual health. So I decided to research the topic and shed light on my narrow view. Sexual health is a state of physical, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality. It requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence. When discussing sexual health a number of sexual health concerns need to be addressed with respect to body integrity, sexual safety, eroticism, gender, sexual orientation, emotional attachment and reproduction. Sex refers to the biological characteristics that define humans as female or male. While these sets of biological characteristics are not mutually exclusive, as there are individuals who possess both, they tend to differentiate humans as males and females. In general use in many languages, the term sex is often used to mean “sexual activity”, but for technical purposes in the context of sexuality and sexual health discussions, the above definition is preferred. According to the current working definition, sexual health is a state of physical, emotional, mental and social...

Sexuality at Different Stages

...Sexuality at Different Life Stages Come to me when those moments in your life arise that cause you to seek advice from a professional voice of reasoning! That can be a good slogan for a therapist to use, as that’s basically the service that they provide to people. Sometimes we as people do need to express the things that’s going on in our life to another person. I never had to consult a therapist in my life, but I do see the benefits of that process. I don’t have the credentials to be a licensed therapist, but I’ll play as a therapist for the day. Everybody is different and the personal situations of Anna, the couple Tom and Susan, and Bill all differ, but all seek the advice from the services I provide. I feel that a lot of young people can relate to Anna’s situation because there are a lot of people that tend to get in her position. Her position being that she is dating an older guy can and is complicating. The first thing I’d ask her is her relationship with her boyfriend or the thoughts of her parents more important to her. The answer to that will most likely tell me a little about the decisions she will or been making regarding the situation. I’d then ask if she is ready for sexual activities. If she decide she not ready, then she has to talk with her boyfriend to let him know that the timing is not right. When ready she should have a sit down with her boyfriend to talk about safe sex and the possible risks involved. If he really loves her then he should be able to...

Human Sexuality

...Kinsey is a movie that portrays the life and studies of Dr. Alfred Kinsey, a man who revolutionized the way Americans perceive sex and sexual activities. The movie starts out with Kinsey as a child, and shows how he was brought up as a Christian, his overbearing father was a pastor, and was also very strict. He had always been taught that masturbation was a sin, but he did it anyway. His father had decided where he was going to college, but he decided to go elsewhere instead. He very much liked to study gall wasps, and went all over the world collecting them. In the class he taught where he talked about gall wasps, he met one of his students, Clara, and they ended up falling in love and got married. When Kinsey decided to teach a marital sex class, the school board was hesitant at first, but finally gave him the opportunity. Many people took the class, and many people were shocked at some of the material that was presented in the class. Kinsey had a few assistants, one named Clyde Martin in particular, who actually had sex with Kinsey in a hotel room for "experimental purposes." He eventually ended up having sex with Kinsey's wife too. Kinsey also had three children, a son and two daughters, and they would all talk about sex at dinner at night, which Kinsey's son didn't enjoy. Kinsey and his assistants, and their wives, had a strange relationship in that they would all switch partners on occasion. They were kind of like a big group of Swingers. Eventually Kinsey ended up being...

Anne Koedt's Radical Feminism

...Then, I will develop that, in the sexism society, Liberalism and Reformism will never be the solution to set up a real position to gays and feminists in society; they will need to go toward Radicalism and a political approach. In the last part, I will explain the real necessity for gays and feminists to access a real identity in society through Civil Rights. At first, there was an important work, an early phenomenon as a spark, which indirectly contributed to the future sexual Revolution. It was the “Kinsey Reports” (1948-1953). A scientist was interested in social and sexual behaviors. Alfred Kinsey surveyed and had the reflection that extra marital sex was a form of sexual liberation within the 50s society, and showed, in a categorical way, that Homosexuality was condemned in society, is to say there were categories created by Sexism. The Kinsey Reports showed the reality of homosexuality, as a real social fact, already well in place in the social and sexual nebula. The Kinsey Reports and the better climate tended to legitimize homosexual encounters: it was a real contribution to the sexual revolution of the 70s! To break the conventional sexual roles codes by being lesbians (lines 4-5), by their specific condition, lesbians claim to be “the vanguard of the women's movement” (line 2). They positioned as the base, the foundation of the feminist movement, because they already fought against male supremacy. In the lesbian speech Lesbian means Woman. Any woman can choose to be...

Paulie's Theory Of Bisexuality

...bisexuality has been suppressed in the majority of both ancient and modern day civilizations stems from the human desire to conform to societal expectations, often deriving from religious texts, that often discourage diversity in sexual orientation. While bisexuality is often only attributed as a description of less that two percent of the population, research attests that many more people than usually assumed hold both same-sex and opposite-sex attractions. American scientist Alfred Kinsey performed one of the first of these substantial studies. In 1948, he began by developing ways to measure the degree of bisexuality among individuals using a group of American males (later on he would include females in his research as well) (Sexual Orientation 2200). The theory Kinsey fabricated is known as the Kinsey scale, which is “a 7-point scale with 0 representing individuals who have only had heterosexual intercourse, and 6, those who have only had same-sex activities” (Sexual Orientation 2200). Kinsey evaluated males and females using this method, discovering that 37 percent of males and 13 percent of females (Sexual Orientation 2200) among those surveyed had participated in both heterosexual and homosexual activities at some point in their lives. Taking into account that this study took place 65 years ago, the percentage of individuals who would admit to having taken part in homosexual activities would be substantially higher now due to modern society’s greater acceptance of queer...
