Knowing Your Audience Paper and Communication Release

We all know how important the use of good communication can calm the uncertainties of a wearisome person. It is vital that the audience the message is sent to can comprehend the information being provided. One must ensure that his thought process in the information shared with others will not lead to a misunderstanding. As we look at the Chilean copper mine disaster in South America, knowing the audience will help the company communicate effectively between the workers needs, the needs of the entombed family members and the mass media. This information has to be told to each group in a different way.

As we can all remember, a small copper mine in northern Chile suffered a cave-in on August 5, 2010, leaving 33 workers trapped underground at a depth of around 300 meters (Weik, 2010). The Minera San Esteban Primera copper mining company, has a tough task ahead of them, to provide vital information to the families and coworkers of the 33 trapped miners. Dealing with this extremely sensitive subject matter, the mining company will have to pay close attention to the way it uses its approach to update its audience.

Dealing with the employee

How will the Minera San Esteban Primera copper mining company communication help its employees to pull through this heartbreaking event? The company must be decisively in charge, they should let their employees know that they are concerned and trying to do the very best with the situation at hand. Other things the company could do to comfort the employees are; ask for support from upper administration, and share facts with the employees as it becomes available. The cave-in was a terrible event that happened within this copper mining company. The company should inspire all personnel to take care of each other. Some workers may favor to talk about the circumstances with other coworkers only. It is up to the company to convince employees to not be fearful to talk with outside help provided by the employer. If this company can get the right support unit, and generate a positive atmosphere in the wake of what has just happened, they can pull through this in heroic fashion.

Dealing with the family members

The mining company has to be aware that many family members will have lots of question. They will also have to deal with many types of feelings. These feelings can range from, (e. g., shock, grief, anger, fear, and disbelief) to name a few. The intensity will vary from person to person. The company should expect that anger will be a family member natural reaction. The company has to be personal but yet gentle when passing information to the family members. They should tend to the needs of the family, and support them as needed. The company has to realize that this anger is justified, and the lack of support from the company to the family may cause the family to see the company as their enemy. Things the company should never tell the family is that, past mistakes have been acknowledged, and the San Jose mine, owned by Compania Minera San Esteban Primera, had a poor safety record: by all accounts it should not have been allowed to reopen after the previous accident (Corrigan, T. 2010, Oct 15).

Dealing with mass media

When a company has to deal with the media it has to ensure that the statement it sends out is not misunderstood. In general, the media should not be treated as the enemy. Dealing with the mass media should be a great opening to your story and not a risk. The company should do all that it can do to get thier story out correctly when talking to the media, but what the media prints is out of your control. Remember that this is about news, not emotion (Haskell, H. 2012).

Conclusion

We see how important the use of good communication can calm the uncertainties of a wearisome person. The tone in your voice and the body language that one displays can calm your audience or put your audience in a panic. A company must learn how to deal with the employee, family members of employees, and the media when dealing with a tragic event.

If the information is regarding a disaster, it is even more important to make sure the company knows their audience. One example of a company needing to know their audience was the Chilean copper mine in South America. In such a disastrous circumstance, the company would need to take great care in how the world found out about the disaster. If not done properly then the companies audience, the world, would view the company is a much worse light then if they had properly released the information. There are two ways in which the company would be releasing information. The miners were trapped without sufficient oxygen, water, or food; no one knew for sure if the miners would stay alive. These miners were stuck underground for four tiring days; there was nothing that even suggested that any of the miners were still alive. There is no precedence of this event in which miners survive being caught below the ground for a long time (Yang, 2010). As luck would have it, all of the tears shed by the miners loved ones; were replaced by pure astonishment when all thirty-three of the miners were found and saved without any of their lives being lost. On one, no matter what the situation is ever thinks that something like the event above could take place, until it does. The company is responsible for contacting the families of everyone trapped underground; the company must also inform their other employees. However, performing an analysis of an audience and tailoring the presentation to meet its needs can mean the difference between triumph and disaster in how listeners receive and decode information. On August 5, 2010, the main entrance into the San José Mine, near Copiapó, Chile, collapsed trapping 33 miners approximately 2,300 feet underground for more than 2 months. The miners’ family members, and by extension, the world, grew increasingly concerned about the well-being of the men as there was no way of determining the actual state of the miners initially. On August 22, 2010, after digging a small hole through the roof the mine’s shelter area, a message was sent to the earth’s surface, via note, stating that everyone was alive. From the onset of the accident, the Chilean government recruited the services of mining industry professionals and on October 13, 2010, the first miner was lifted out of the mine. All 33 men were safely retrieved in less than 24 hours and reunited with their families. The way in which the Chilean government and the enlisted professionals handled the dissemination of information, proved successful in how they wanted the viewing and listening public to receive the messages. When delivering a pertinent...

The way you deliver a message will depend on your audience and if you are delivering the message informally, formally, personally, or on behalf of a company. The way you deliver a message after an accident or disaster is important, as you are people with a fragile situation and fragile people involved. If a company portrays, through their messages, that the situation is not under control or that they do not care there will be consequences for that company and anybody affiliated with the company. When there is information regarding an accident or disaster, it's important for the company know their audience. Understanding the recipients of the message that is being communicated will allow the sender to use the proper type of communication, tone and type of information to include in the message. Knowing your audience will ensure that the message is delivered appropriately and that the audience completely understands the message without any misunderstandings or confusion. In the event of a disaster or other catastrophe, knowing the audience that you will be delivering this message to is extremely vital and important. In this essay I will convey the importance of knowing your audience in regards to the communications that went out to the public about the Chilean copper mine collapse in South America. On August 5, 2010, a small copper mine in northern Chile collapsed trapping inside of it 33 miners (Weik, 2010). The 33 miners were trapped 300 meters below ground with very little food, oxygen or water. News of the collapse spread around the world and many feared that the miners would all perish before being rescued (Illiano, Wade, 2010). The world held a collective breath when after seventeen days of drilling contact was made and all 33 miners appeared to have survived the ordeal. Initially the miners were told that it would take up to 4 months to pull them up to the surface (Guardian.co.uk, 2010). We are to answer questions about different types of audiences and the needs of them. In this essay I will answer several questions that will discuss how to approach different types of audiences. I will also draft two separate communications from the mining company, one for the families and one for the employees. I will identify which kind of channel is most appropriate for each group. Knowing Your Audience Knowing your audience when putting together any type of communication is critical to making your point and making sure the audience understands the message. When putting together a message of any type, you should first think through thoroughly what you want to say. What type of audience are you talking to/writing for? Is this a business communication or personal? Obviously those two types of audiences are different so you would not construct your message the same for both. Considerations to what type of audience and their roles must be taken in advance to ensure your message has the right tone and content for the directed audience. The ability to know your audience becomes even more important when a company has to deal with a disaster, outcome, and the aftermath of it. A good example of this is the disaster for the Chilean copper miners in South America. In a Chilean copper mine a disastrous collapse of one of the shafts left 33 miners trapped 310 meters below the surface. This disaster made knowing and understanding their audience extremely important to the mine owners. The audience’s for the company to report to at this time were made up of news correspondence, the victim’s families, and the media. The way this company dealt with this disaster and their different audiences would in the end define how their audience and the world would see them. Their turnaround to report and keep the audience informed went a long way in telling how the Chilean mining company will be viewed for a long time into the future.  Not only would the company representative have to keep the prestige of the mining company in one piece, they would have to issue precise and straightforward information that would not always be in the best interest of the company.
