Richard Fleck's Short Story Priscilla And The Wimps

...When the school is run by the “Kobras” who are a ruthless gang, someone needs to step up. That’s when Priscilla comes in. Richard Peck’s short story “Priscilla and the Wimps” is a low level comedy because it caricatures and it has physical comedy to convey the idea that standing up for others is important. One element that shows this story is low comedy is that it has physical comedy. When Priscilla stood up for Melvin she went “behind him in another easy motion. And with a single mighty thrust forward, frogmarches Monk into her own locker.” After Priscilla wedges Monk into the locker “it snows all night, a blizzard. The whole town ices up. And School closes for a week.” The chance of this type of situation happening is highly unlikely but...

Trends in European Business Law

...Business Law Trends With the move towards a market economy slowing taking over Europe, there has been a vast amount of changes in laws that effect businesses across Europe and in the Czech Republic in particular. Through my research, I have discovered a few trends in which I have found interesting. The first of those trends is the slow removal of anonymous corporate ownership in the Czech Republic. Before the end of last month, numerous companies throughout the Czech Republic had anonymous shares. This made it difficult to determine who had ownership in these said companies. Because of that, just recently a law was put in to place to prevent these thousands of companies from continuing to keep shares anonymous. June 30th was the deadline for companies to make all corporate shares public, and if the anonymous shares are not removed then the companies themselves should disappear. Anonymous shareholders will also lose their rights within these companies such as voting at meetings and receiving dividends. The reasoning behind this is to create a more transparent corporate world in the Czech Republic. As well, this law will help towards ending corruption and criminal acts in the corporate world. Many of these companies have been viewed as a front for illegal activity. These companies have been pinpointed as the most likely companies to be involved in fraud, and the government has made it a point to attempt to block these companies from receiving subsidies, payments, and public...

The Advantages of Differing Views on Organisational Culture Theory: the Benefits of a Multiparadigm Approach.

...Charles Martin S3134484 1 The advantages of differing views on organisational culture theory: the benefits of a multiparadigm approach The purpose of this essay is to outline the advantages and disadvantages of robust debate surrounding the field of organisational culture. To achieve this, this essay presents the benefits of robust debate which has led to multiple paradigms surrounding the field of organisational culture within organisational theory. It will then be demonstrated how the effect of multiple paradigms produces various, ever improving research approaches, and different research methods which contribute insights that refute, support or extend current knowledge (Lewis & Kelemen 2002). When examined, these techniques provide a context for change within management practice using a multiparadigm approach. It has been observed by many researchers that a single paradigm is inevitably limiting when attempting to uncover certain facets within organisations and can obscure others (Schultz and Hatch 1996). The apparent discourse within organisational culture theory has exemplified organisational theory to the extent that Mingers and Brocklesby (1997) praised organisational studies for exemplifying and encouraging multiparadigm interests within other fields of research (e.g. physics, biology). The benefits of a multiparadigm approach is argued to offer a midpoint between the extremes of academic theory; this has been achieved in organisational culture...

Homeless to Harvard

...Priscilla and the Wimps Francisco Vasquez By Bonnie per.6 “Priscilla and the Wimps”, is a humorous story about school bullies .In the story, Priscilla, a quiet, shy girl has a best friend named Melvin who get’s picked on by the school bullies, Klutter’s Kobras. Priscilla defends her friend and gives Monk Klutter, the leader of the gang, a taste of justice. Throughout the story the theme of the importance of friendship is demonstrated through the relationships among the students. The importance of friendship is first shown in the story in an unlikely way. Monk Klutter is an effective gang leader because he has so many friends willing to do his dirty work. The narrator of the story reveals in the beginning of the tale that, “there was a time when you couldn’t even go to the rest room around this school without a pass… I’m talking about a pass that could cost anywhere up to a buck, sold by Monk Klutter.” In the previous quote, the narrator tells the reader that everyone had to buy a bathroom pass. Given the number of students and bathrooms at an ordinary school, Monk must have had a large group of people willing to follow his orders and sell passes. Although this kind of activity is not found in normal friendships, Monk’s gang members, his friends, are an important part of his school “business.” Without his friends...

A Mercy

...A Mercy opens with Florens, a black slave, about sixteen years old, on a journey to visit the lover to whom she is addressing her thoughts and feelings. Florens is a literate slave, taught by a priest in defiance of the law. Florens recalls how she was given to her present master, Jacob Vaark, in partial settlement of a debt her prior master, a slave owner from the brutal Portuguese slave colony of Angola, owes to Vaark. Vaark is offered Florens and her mother, but her mother encourages Vaark to take only Florens because her mother is still nursing a baby boy. Florens, about eight years old when she is taken, recounts her shock, pain, and bitterness at this abandonment by her minha mae, “my mother” in Portuguese. The second chapter, told by a third-person narrator who reveals Jacob’s thoughts and feelings, recounts Vaark’s journey to meet with D’Ortega and something of his story as an orphan and beneficiary of 120 acres in the New World. Vaark, a trader and businessman, has a soft spot for “orphans and strays.” He owns Lina (a Native American slave acquired after Lina’s tribe is nearly decimated by an epidemic of measles) and has taken in Sorrow (a half-drowned foundling girl) in another business deal. The reader gets some sense of the politics and prejudice of the period, learning of Vaark’s attitude toward the “popishness” of Catholic Maryland and its luxuries, built upon the free labor of slaves, in contrast to his simple life as a northern trader. Vaark comes away from...

Inheritance Law

...Inheritance Law in Belgium and Switzerland Marieke Martens We live, we work and we die. People basically work to make money and spend it but also save it. After somebody has died what will happen to the money and the possessions? Firstly the division of the money and possessions takes place, according to the will. But what if there is now will? If there is a will or not, the possessions and money will not be inherited for free. The inheritance law is a collection of articles, which explains what happens to and with the inheritance of the person who died when there is no will and when there is a will. In this paper two countries will be compared based on their inheritance law. The first country is Belgium, which is part of the EU and has no specific advantages if it comes to being a tax paradise. The other country, which will be used in this research, is Switzerland, which is not part of the EU and is very famous for being a tax paradise. Both countries do have one thing in common: they are both West-European countries. Because Switzerland is a tax paradise it can be assumed that the inheritance law in Switzerland is more favourable than in the Belgium. This statement basically states that in Switzerland you have to pay less inheritance tax, there are better condition if it comes to making wills or not, than in Belgium, which results in a higher inheritance than in Belgium. These are the fields of Inheritance law that will be covered in the paper in order to answer he...
