...Hainan to Become an International Tourism Island In 2010, Chinese Government delivered the “fundamental future blueprint and action plan for the development of Hainan International Tourism Island over the next few years.” This implies that Hainan, the southernmost as well as the only completely tropical, island province of China, is going to open its arm to the entire world and to focus on attracting foreign visitors while continue to welcome people from inland China. Located in the South China Sea and separated from the mainland by the 24-km Qiongzhou Strait, Hainan is 33 920 km2 in area with a population of about 7.79 million people in 2002, comprising 1.34 million (17.2 per cent) ethnic minorities.(Kai Gu, Geoffrey Wall, 2) To most Chinese, Hainan Island is a paradise which is unaffected by pollution yielded from heavy industry; it is also a wonderful place to spend the long, freezing winter of people from northern China. The fresh air, the moderate climate, the brightly shiny white beach, the natural formed hot spring, the clear seawater with colorful marine organisms and the abundant tropical plants and fruits are all the tourism resources attracting tourists year after year since ancient dynasties of China. However, with the restriction of inconvenient transportation and unopened policies of old time Chinese government, the mass tourism with foreign visitors had never formed. With the new policy declared, government will definitely put immense fund to pump up the foreigner-focused...

...I.D.U Research The Marshall Islands is a sprawling chain of volcanic islands and coral in the central Pacific Ocean, between Hawaii and the Philippines. The small nation consists of 29 atolls and five islands that makes up the island nation. In the northwest, Bikini Atoll are in largely undisturbed waters and is used as a ship graveyard of the warships in World War II, currently it is now a popular diving site for tourist. Marshall islands are located in the region of Micronesia 2,000 to 3,000 miles south and west of Hawaii. The major atolls Kwajalein is located between 160° and 173° East and 4° and 20° North of the equator. Most of the people living in the Marshall Islands are Micronesians. ...Currently, Neomonachus Schauinslandi, commonly known as Hawaiian monk seals are the only pinnipeds living within proximity of the United States (Lowry et al., 2011). They are the only seals that are native to the Hawaiian Islands. Their only close relatives are Caribbean monk seals, which are extinct today, and the endangered Mediterranean monk seal (Lowry et al, 2011). With the Polynesian settlement, the society within the island grew, causing a change in the natural ecosystems that marine mammal, like Hawaiian monk seals, survive and thrive peacefully in. However, it later changed to fit societal needs and standards once humans discovered the Island. The Hawaiian monk seal population is declining at a rate of about four percent per year (Watson et al., 2011). It is estimated that about 14 million years ago, Hawaiian monk seals have inhabited the Hawaiian archipelago. This allowed them to adapt to the long-term geologic changes that the archipelago endured over time. Thus, they have been on the Hawaiian Islands long before humans have. Being the main inhabitants of the island, monk seals needed their habitat to be shallow water reefs that was made primarily for pupping, weaning, and foraging; areas of sandy beach for hauling out; and deep reef areas for foraging (Watson et al, 2011). However, in the inhabited Main Hawaiian Islands (MHI), monk seals would nearly always coincide with human populations and infrastructure. Thus, making it difficult for them to be independently confined...

...The Plastic Game: ideas • Goal: decrease the consumption of plastic bottles • Principle of the game: Each bottle, when produced, would be given a token, which would follow the way the bottle make from the production to the consumption, ending in the waste disposal. Once bought by a consumer, a system would automatically register this number in a database, as well as the name of the consumer. Once a year, the Plastic Game would take place (one per country). It would globally happen like this. Among all plastic bottles buyers, 20 people would be chosen randomly. The chance to get chosen would depend on the number of plastic bottles bought during the year: the more a person has bought some, the more chance he/she would get to be chosen. These 20 people would have to defend themselves from the others in order to not loose. The last one remaining would be the loser, and would consequently have to pay a huge tax to compensate the pollution created by the production of plastic bottles. This money would be invested in research to decease pollution and waste. During the game, the candidates would face several tasks, one by stage. Each time, candidates would denote from the others in good terms, which would allow them to leave the game. The trial would be different at each step. Ideas of tasks: - Think about why they have bought plastic bottles and what other things they could have bought instead. Propose a global solution about how people could reduce their plastic waste....
