...Lands’ End Case Study Shawan M. Fisher, MPA Management Information Systems Texas Southern University Fall 2015 September 30, 2015 Discussion of Company In 1963, Gary Comer, an advertising copywriter with Young & Rubicam, decided to pursue his dream of opening his own business. With $30,000 of initial funding, Comer and his partners Robert Halperin, Richard Stearns and 2 of Stearns employees set out to open Lands’ End. The first store was located in Chicago IL. and initially offered sailing equipment. Comer was an avid sailor along with Richard Stearns who was also a sailor. The next year, Comer produced a mail order catalog entitled “The Racing Sailors Equipment Guide”, and began filling orders that came in to the company. In the spring of 1977, Lands End produced its first catalog containing apparel and other goods. That same year, sales reached $3.6 million. In 1978, the company introduced its first button-down Oxford shirt upon which the Lands’ End legacy would be built. Also in 1978, operations were moved from Chicago to Dodgeville, WI. Another significant shift in operations at the time was the introduction of fulfilling customers’ orders by telephone. Lands’ End set up its toll free 800- number ad staffed it with eager operators who were answering customers’ calls in less than 2-rings! With clothing offerings soaring, the company broke ground on an office building and a 33,000 square-foot warehouse in 1979. By 1980, Lands’ End...

...Running Head: End-of-Chapter Questions Case Review September 28, 2012 Assignment 47.1 The case of Buder v. Satore (1989) deals with gifts to minors and the duties of the custodian of those gifts. Respectfully, this case arose out of an action brought by respondent on behalf of Theodore Alexander and Cori Marie Buder, then minor children of Ms. Sartire Buder and ex-husband Alexander Buder. The mother filed an action against the father based on his alleged breach of the fiduciary duty he owed the couples minor children as the custodian of gift money they had received from a grandparent. The trial court found that the father had breached his fiduciary duty and assessed damages and attorney fees. The intermediate court affirmed and added attorney fees on appeal. The court’s held that: (1) the standard of care under the Uniform Gift to Minors Act (UGMA) and the Uniform Transfers to Minors Act (UTMA), Colo. Rev. Stat. §§ 11-50-101 - 11-50-126 (1987), is not the same as under the general trust laws, Colo. Rev. Stat. § 15-1-304 (1973), (2) a custodian is a fiduciary, (3) the statutes contain different standards and that the standards contained in the UGMA/UTMA apply exclusively to custodians, while the standard contained in Colo. Rev. Stat. 15-1-304 applies to other fiduciaries, (4) any error in assessing the standard of care was harmless because the trial court...

...symbols that he uses to tell the story. The two main symbols are the land and the river. He uses the land and the river to show the differences of life on land and life on the river. The land is the symbol for all the bad things that happen and the river is a symbol for all the good. Both the good and the bad help the characters grow from the beginning to the end such as maturing, finding themselves, and meeting their goals of achieving freedom. The land represents the total opposite of the river and is used by Twain to portray what life was really like during that time. The land is symbolic for the bad in Huck and Jim’s life experiences. Anything bad that has happened through the book is originated from the land. Land is symbol of violence, cruelty of society, death, hatred, betrayal, and abuse. Society is very judgmental and unfair. People were racist, and refused to see things any other way. The majority of black people were slaves, slaves were looked at lowest possible class. Therefore, any black person, such as Jim was seen as nothing more than a piece of property. This is what made it so hard for people to understand the relationship between a white boy and a black man. Land means Huck must live in civilization and is forced to be a product of his society. Ms. Watson and the widow Douglas tried to teach Huck manners but he couldn’t be civilized, nor did he want to be for he was much too wild. She and Ms. Watson were shoving their two different views of religion onto Huck...

...turn for the worse as Ms. Nugent’s ill-temper causes Bernie to snap – and lands her dead in her freezer. This movie brings up some questions, specifically regarding image. After analysis, the question I keep coming back to is “Was Bernie genuine and sincere? Or was it all a façade?” Although Bernie committed a horrible crime, I believe the answer to this question is “yes”- Bernie was a genuine man. Throughout the movie we see Bernie come to be a pillar in the community of Carthage. He was an active member in the church, teaching Sunday school and signing in the choir. He donated his time to the local community college, helping with plays. He frequently bought random gifts for people. Even after Marjorie’s death and when Bernie had free range of Marjorie’s money, he donated it and spent it for the better good. He gave people money for college, continued buying gifts for others, and donated money for a new prayer wing for his church. The list of charitable things Bernie did for the community of Carthage goes on. There was almost no greed involved in any of the decisions that Bernie made. He kept his modest house and car, and the majority of the money he spent was on others. Although Bernie felt he had a reputation to uphold, I believe that he genuinely cared about his community. The amount of time he donated to others is overwhelming. He frequently checked up on local widows he had assisted at the funeral home, after all that are how he became close with Ms. Nugent. Even today...

...building sitting on a small hill on the corner of fifth and 4th Ave S.E. in Colquitt County, Georgia. As I entered the building, Ms. Fay Holland greeted me. She gave me directions on where to begin the tour being that she was unable to give me a personal tour due to health reasons. The Museum was much bigger than what it looked from the outside. It had several rooms that had displays and artifacts. The first display that caught my attention was a glass display that had a Nazi Flag. I did research on the Nazi Flag in Georgia and came across a story of a Georgia business man by the name of Anthony Harris, owner of Seven on Second and Art Store in Macon, Georgia. The purpose of Mr. Harris displaying the Nazi Flag was to get people to have a conversation about it. He stated, “It’s good to address it, but there is no need to kill someone over it.” He also stated, “Hitler stole the Nazi flag and that the Swastika Symbol was originally a Hindu Symbol that meant good luck. In the next room, there were display of Indian Artifacts, a Hut and a picture of Georgia’s Creek Indian Chief William McIntosh (ca.1778-1825). William McIntosh was a controversial Chief of The Lower Creeks in the nineteenth century in Georgia. Williams McIntosh supported the United States and its efforts to end those who opposed the invasion of white settlers on Indian Land. William McIntosh supported General Andrew Jackson in the Creek War of 1812-1815 and The First Seminole War (1817-18). Because of...

...She is a 4-foot-11 political force. When she was 18, she decided to sell off her share of her family's land and use the money to set up a cooperative that teaches livelihoods and lends to small businesses. Her siblings were supportive, urging her to sell off the best plots of property to finance her dream. It was a success, growing from modest beginnings to hundreds of members. After that, her father encouraged her to run for local office. When Ms. Orejola was in her early 20s, he arranged a marriage to an eligible local bachelor. In response, she ran away from home and joined a Roman Catholic convent. “He wanted me to know only one man,” she says. “I wanted to know many people.” Her father didn’t speak to her for eight years. Outgoing and cheerful, Orejola often invokes a prayer – her favorite – to Jesus’s grandmother, subsequently sainted by the Catholic church. “I say, ‘Saint Anna, please bless me with pleasant surprises.' ” Typhoon Yolanda was not one of them. Orejola cut short a trip to Rome to check on the members of her cooperative here, mostly the children and grandchildren of original members, and to pay calls to her extended family. THE LORD TAKETH AWAY She arrives at the evacuation center where many of the cooperative families have taken shelter in what was the old parish hall. The adjacent church lies in ruins, its roof blown away and its wooden pews scattered and splintered. The parish members have dragged some of the battered pews to what remains...

...Gary Finch September 17, 2013 Ms. Turner P4 English LIS Throughout American History there have been prejudices toward people of different religions, political views, ethnicity, nationalities, sexual orientations, gender and disabilities. Even though our nation has taken great steps forward to end hatred and ignorance there is a near impossibility to end such and unfortunate part of the individual mind. Through the middle of the 19th century to the beginning of the Second World War a massive influx of Irish Catholic immigrants filled the slums of major cities such as New York and Boston. The “traditional” Anglo-Saxon Protestant American saw the Irish as a threat or conspiracy by the Catholic Church. The Irish began to be viewed as a nuisance and undesirable. The Irish filled prisons where were innocent. Riots and crowds of people protested the influencing Irish… who left Ireland to escape the same intolerance from Great Britain. Since the arrival of Europeans in Jamestown and Plymouth who came for religious freedom there has been a constant disrespect for Native Americans. Entire tribes were forced to relocate to lands that were completely different from the ones in which they had no knowledge of. Tribes such as the Lakota Sioux were stripped of their firearms, which they needed for survival. The US Army relocated the Sioux to Wounded Knee Creek in South Dakota...

...Dong Won Moon Ms. Jana Russ World Civilizations: China 23 July 2009 What were the reasons which caused Qing Dynasty to fall? And why is that important? What was the opportunity that does China got a foothold in modernization? What is the last Kingdom of the history of China? The Qing dynasty was the last kingdom ever lasted in Chinese history. In fact, the fall of the Qing dynasty facilitated modernization of China, however there were three main reasons which caused collapse of Qing dynasty: Empress Dowager Cixi, Opium war and rebellions during Qing period. First, who is Empress Dowager Cixi? As the textbook “CHINA: A Cultural, Social, and Political History” by Patricia Buckley Ebrey said the Cixi was most powerful person during the self-strengthening period. To maintain her authority, she chose her four years old cousin after her son’s death. The record also said that Cixi was a skillful political operator (p.223). However, Cixi was sided with conservative parts which caused French fleet attack on China (p.224). So this was the reason why Qing got attacked from foreign forces which the dynasty gradually got weakened, so Cixi was one of the reason why Qing dynasty got perished. This was also pretty interesting issue that it was kind of opposite view comparing to Kangxi who lived to perceive the Qing Empire firmly established (p.190). Another big issue that caused Qing dynasty to fall was the Opium War. As the textbook by Ebrey, it said that by the late 18th century...
