...LDR/531 October 11, 2012 Week # 1 Individual Leadership Approach Paper Leadership in Organization Robin Muse Leadership has been defined in multiple ways. The subject of leadership has intrigued many individuals and has been speculated by research that probed a growing interest in understanding leadership and the process involving different teams and organizations. Although there are many effective and ineffective ways to merge people to lead, it has been difficult to define the “term” leadership. There is no doubt that the leadership position simplifies the influence to guide, structure, and facilitate activities over other people, it also shares a specialized process that influence the role of leadership. The type of influence process that defines leadership involves the commitment by followers along with the reluctant of obedience of thus followers. ...Research Approach LDR/531 As Yukl (2010) summarized in our assigned readings, most definitions of leadership in organizations refer to the process in which one person influences others in a group. In this paper I will be discussing the overview of the major research approaches and my selection of which I believe to be most effective. Research approaches Most leadership literature classify research approaches in to five major categories: the traits approach, the behavior approach, the power-influence approach, the situational approach and the integrative approach (Yukl, 2010). Following is a definition of each: • Trait approach- This approach tries to find physiological, demographic, personality, intellective, task related and social characteristics that identify leader emergence and effectiveness (Trait Theory of Leadership, 2011). • Power-influence approach- This approach attempts to measure effectiveness based on the different ways managers use power and influence to get things done (Leadership Styles , 2011). • Situational approach- This approach emphasizes on contextual factors that affect leadership behaviors (Yukl, 2010). • Integrative approach- Integration is the most commonly used today, which means to use more than one of the previously mentioned approaches (Yukl, 2010). Approach Selection After reviewing the major approaches to researching leadership I believe one style isn’t sufficient to properly...

...Leadership Approach Paper Any Body LDR531 Organizational Leadership August 15, 1999 Professor X Leadership Approach Paper The definition of leadership is debatable among leaders and followers in countless regards. According to Yuki (2010), the process of influencing others to understand and agree about what needs to be done and how to do it, and the process of facilitating individual and collective efforts to accomplish shared objectives is the definition of leadership. Likewise, most individuals would probably support the concept that leadership involves some form of influence. The focus of this paper is to provide an overview of the integrative approach to leadership as a tool for managers in any organization. Overview The integrative approach to leadership is a process that involves bringing together groups and organizations in semi-permanent ways typically across sector boundaries to remedy complex obstacles and achieve the success (Alban-Metcalfe & Alimo-Metcalfe, 2010). Strengths and Weaknesses Leadership Example A key leadership challenge for managers is maintaining and further developing the critical capabilities that ensure an organization’s success and longevity. Thus, good leadership is at the heart of great triumphs for firms that recognize the significance of balanced decisions. Thoughtful analysis and prudence in every decision empowers leaders to assess the potential impact of long-term choices. Moreover, the right leadership approach enhances...

...Leadership in Organizations Ashley Rivers LDR 531 November 17, 2011 Dr. Rickie Baldwin Leadership in Organizations Many organizations are created from the thoughts, motivation, and determination of a leader. A leader is an individual who has the traits, abilities, and behavior to influence followers and accomplish task objectives. These leadership skills can help an organization achieve the strategic goals and objectives of the organization. The term leadership is defined as “the process of influencing others to understand and agree about what needs to be done and how to do it, and the process of facilitating individual and collective efforts to accomplish shared objectives” (Yukl, 2010, p. 8). Many researchers have focused on the concept of leadership. Some researchers “define leadership according to their individual perspectives and the aspects of the phenomenon of most interest to them” (id. at p. 2). Research has also distinguished the different views of leadership, and other forms of leadership. The other forms of leadership include direct and indirect leadership. This paper will review the views of leadership, the other forms of leadership, and the behavior approach of leadership. The strengths and weaknesses of the behavior approach will also be discussed. Many researchers have argued whether leadership should be viewed as a “specialized role or as a shared influence” (id. at p. 3) process. Leadership as a specialized role focuses on the relationship...

...Leadership Styles & Approaches 1. Charismatic Leadership- Describes follower perceptions that the leader is endowed with exceptional qualities. Have a strong need for power, high self-confidence, and a strong conviction in their beliefs and ideals. Expresses strong positive emotion such as enthusiasm and optimism to influence followers. Leaders who use authority to implement an innovative strategy for attaining important objectives may gain more expert power if the strategy is successful, but unless they articulate an ideological vision to justify the strategy, they are unlikely to appear charismatic. The leader's methods for attaining the idealized goal must differ from conventional ways of doing things in order to impress followers that the leader is extraordinary. Charismatic leaders are more likely to emerge in crisis situations where people are worried about economic loss, physical danger, or threats to core values. Charismatic leaders tend to make more risky decisions that can result in a serious failure, and they tend to make enemies who will use such a failure as an opportunity to remove the leader from office. 2. Transformational Leadership- Describes how effective leaders inspire and transform followers by appealing to their ideals and emotions. Appeals to moral values of followers in an attempt to raise their consciousness about ethical issues. Transformational behaviors include Idealized influence, Individualized consideration, Inspirational motivation...

...northern region of Louisiana. As an employee of Agape Hospice; the perfect position would be director of marketing. My leadership style demonstrates a concern for people as well as task; with task being the priority. To be an employee for a Hospice group, the concern for people is very important. However; accomplishing a task creates security and a sense of accomplishment in the organization. Hospice provides “comforting care that emphasizes quality of life” (Hospice, 2011, pg. 1). This requires a concern for the needs of people. The mission of hospice is “serving faithfully as your partner through the final stages of a journey we know as life” (Hospice, 2011, pg 1). Hospice requires a sense of passion and concern with emphasize on task to accomplish a goal of security and serenity. Leadership style The leadership style most associated with my role in an organization is trait approach. Trait approach focuses on the personality, motives, and values of the leader. Trait approach is an adequate leadership style for a director of marketing because motive is an important issue in hospice care. The motive of hospice is to increase the patient census while offering a quality of life in the final stages of life. However; based upon the assessment “What’s My Leadership Style” (Phoenix, 2007, Section II, B.1), task is the most important. The leadership style assessment indicates an importance in getting the job done, whereas the concern for people focuses are group...

...Missouri’s Civil War Case Analysis Missouri’s Civil War examines the dynamics of intergroup conflict stemming from scare resources within the university. Provost Ronald F. Bunn is ultimately designated with the responsibility of “preserv[ing] and enhance[ing] the quality of the university in a time of severely limited resources.” Initially functional conflict and integrative bargaining are possible approaches to the requirements necessary to cut budgets at the university. Bunn’s leadership however neglects to take focus of the issue and ultimately fail to effectively influence and control the behaviors of those within the overall structure of the institution derailing the decision-making process. In addition to examining examples where Bunn’s leadership moves away from functional conflict and integrative bargaining, this analysis also reviews other critical choices the Provost could have made to gain buy-in and commitment from all members of the university in this important decision. The sources of conflict in this case can be found in examining the initial stage of the five-stage conflict process. This first stage, potential opposition or incompatibility, identifies the presence of conditions that create opportunities for conflicts to arise. The three categories of this first stage, communication, structure, and personal variables, all factor into the intergroup conflict stemming from the decisions being made at the University of Missouri. First, the communication between...

...Leadership Approach Terence Bachman LDR/531 March 26, 2013 David Sarnowski Leadership Approach Organizations depend on the management and leadership skills of individuals to be successful. Companies depend on individuals who possess the ability, the necessary traits and behaviors to influence others to accomplish the company’s objectives. According to the text, Leadership in Organizations, leadership is defined as in many different ways (Yuhl, 2010, p. 2). Katz and Khan describe leadership as in the book entitled, The social psychology of organizations as, “the influential increment over and above mechanical compliance with the routine directives of the organization” (Katz & Khan, 1978). This study will identify the five different approaches to leadership and define the most prevalent leadership approach used at Matrix Direct. Matrix Direct is the largest agency in the United States. Owned by American International Group (AIG), Matrix Direct accounts for nearly 35% of the AIG’s life insurance sales. The company was founded in 1992 by Ronald Harris, former owner of Zurich Direct. The company was founded on the idea that if companies compete for a client business the price will fall, therefore driving consumer demand to higher levels. Controlling interest in the company was purchased in 2002 by American International Group. Due to the large volume of business generated...

...Deciding How to Decide The functions of every manager in an organization is inclined on making the decisions on the organization and finding ways on how to interact with the stakeholders. Decision styles normally addresses on how the manager will be effective in terms of performance. The decision style has the strengths and weakness. Through the decision theory, the manager of the company will be able to understand the character of the employees. The Dimensions of Decision Style How the manager will run an organization through the decisions will be based on the experience that he or she has learned in the course of the management. It involves how the manager processes the information. Even though people have different ways of thinking, research has shown that there is a correlation in terms of thinking and processing of the information. The quantity of the information and complexity of the information is among the key factors that leads to disparity in decision making among the individuals. Also, the size and number of alternatives available after screening the information. The complexity and focus on the solution will depend on the number of alternatives available. The size of the information that is available to the manager is what will be used to determine the outcome of the decision. Too much information on a particular subject can lead to confusion. On the other hand, when less data is provided concerning a particular matter can lead to low or inadequate decision since...

...Week One Leadership Approaches LDR 531 February 17, 2013 Dr. Pat Abstract Leadership can have several definitions. Researchers can take many different approaches to studying leadership and leadership styles. Indicators can be examined to determine the effectiveness of leaders and potential leaders. It can be argued that leaders are not “born”; they are trained and taught skill sets that develop their leadership style. Leadership approaches are classified into the following five approaches: the trait approach, the behavior approach, the power-influence approach, the situational approach, and the integrative approach. I believe the behavior approach may be a better suited approach for companies like the one I worked at for eight years. ...Leadership Approach LDR/531 February 25, 2012 Daryl Korinek Leadership Approach Leadership is an important function of management, which helps to maximize and to achieve organizational goals. A leader is expected to initiate actions, motivate employees, provide guidance, create high morale, infuse confidence, and build a positive work environment. Currently there are five major approaches to studying leadership: trait approach, behavior approach, powerful influence approach, situational approach, and the integrative approach. The following review will discuss the behavior approach. The behavior approach is the idea of looking further into what the manager performs daily. “The behavior approach began in the early 1950s after many researchers became discouraged with the trait approach and began to pay close attention to what mangers actually do on the job” (Yukl, 2010). Within the behavior approach there are two categories of information that is analyzed. Researchers are identifying how managers utilize his or her time, daily activities, responsibilities, and expected functions of the manager. Researches are also investigating how managers deal with on-the-job demands and time constraints. To conduct the research, researchers relied on data collected by direct observation, questionnaires, and interviews. The other category of information being studied is identifying how the manager is an effective leader. Researchers relied on a survey field study that included a questionnaire...

...Strategies Promoting More Effective Leadership Strategies Promoting More Effective Leadership “Exercising adaptive leadership is about you (an individual system) making interventions in a social system of which you are a part” (Heifetz, Grashaw, & Lisnksy, 2009). Leadership is a complex process and may have different meanings depending who you ask. This paper discusses strategies that promote more effective organizational leadership and interventions based on my assessment of organizational culture and adaptive challenges at Chipotle. Leadership “Leadership is a process, involves influence, occurs in groups, and involves common goals” (Northouse, 2013). Over the years, there have been many studies and theories defining and conceptualizing what leadership is. The common component described by Northouse (2013), is that nearly all classifications of leadership describe leadership as an influence process toward goal attainment. Leadership is not a linear, one-way event, but rather an interactive event according to Northouse (2009). Northouse (2009) describes leadership as working with people and leaders changing the way people think about what is possible. Strategies As described by Porter (1996), “Competitive strategy is about being different. It means deliberately choosing a different set of activities to deliver a unique mix of value. Strategy renders choices about what not to do as important as choices about what to do (para. 2). Strategy involves setting...
