Recognize Contributions

In chapter 10 the main focus was to demonstrate how best to recognize contributions and bring out the best in people. This was explained through several methods and strategies that described in detail how to go about doing them. Throughout this essay I will select methods and describe how I would personally apply these in the workplace.

The first thing that I would do, would be to make the workplace that people are in comfortable. It is well known that people who feel comfortable are happy, and happy people have positive attitudes and perfrom better. However If employees are not comfortable sociallizeing with fellow workers or the boss that they work for can hider their work. In order to make people comfortable you have to be welcoming and accepting of people and their ideas, and you must communicate with them.

The next method that I would use would be to make sure people know what is expected of them. An employee who does not know what his job or role in the company is will inevitably make mistake and will be punished for them. If that person is able to have a full understanding of the task the chances that they complete the task correctly and on time drastically improves. This method builds off of the first method that I stated because if the employee is confused they will need to ask for help or guidance. It will become an endless cycle if it is not corrected; the employee will not feel comfortable, they will not questions about their assignment, resulting in bad work and they will be punished.

One of the more important methods to recognize contributions and appreciate excellence would be to communicate with your employees and be friendly. I know from experience that bosses that put up a hard front and always seem standoffish can have a negative affect on performance. If they never show you interest or appreciation for the work that you do, what is there that makes you want to work them. Luckily I can say that I have been on both side of the spectrum and that I have had bosses that genuine cared about me and how I felt In the work environment.
