...marking centre. Candidates’ responses should be considered on merit. Whenever appropriate, marks should be awarded on a holistic basis. 4. 5. Marking the comprehension: Incorrect spelling in one-word answers should be marked wrong. Incorrect spelling and language errors in longer responses should not be penalised because the focus is on understanding. For open-ended questions, no marks should be awarded for YES/NO or I AGREE/I DISAGREE. The reason/ substantiation/motivation is what should be considered. For TRUE/FALSE or FACT/OPINION questions, the mark should be split, i.e. award 1 mark for TRUE/FALSE or FACT/OPINION and a mark for the reason/substantiation/ motivation/quotation. For questions which require quotations from the text, do not penalise candidates for omitting the quotation marks. When one-word answers are required and the candidate gives a whole sentence, mark correct provided that the correct word is underlined/highlighted. When two/three facts/points are required and a range is given, mark only the first two/three. If a candidate uses words from another language other than the one being examined, disregard those words, and if the answer still makes sense, do not penalise. However, if a word from another language is used in a text and required in an answer, this will be acceptable. Accept dialectal variations. For...

Quoting instead of paraphrasing As a rule, you should only quote when either the original author said what he/she said so well that you could simply not say it better OR you are quoting a passage from fiction to convey the tone of the story. Quotations should be introduced by you; do not insert someone else’s words in you essay as if they are merely a continuation of your own words. Another quote that appeals to us as a young audience is: ‘’It’s all one big endless loop. We lie the mirror and the mirror likes us. To friend a person is merely to include the person in our private hall of flattering mirrors.’’ This is one of the issues the youth have, to look good and be liked. Our lives look a lot more interesting when they’re filtered through the sexy Facebook interface. We star in our own movies, we photograph ourselves incessantly, we click the mouse and a machine confirms our sense of sense of mastery.’’ Here he addresses his young self-centred audience. ...It’s very easy to find information for a research paper but it’s not in most cases simple to add information to your paper without falling a victim of plagiarism. The tests gives guidelines on how one can avoid plagiarism in while writing a research paper to ensure that it is free of plagiarism. From the quiz I undertook on plagiarism, pre-test score was low as compared to post-test score which was higher. Only four questions were answered correctly in the pre-test quiz. This was due to limited knowledge I had about detecting, preventing and dealing with plagiarism. In quiz one, I answered wrongly the second question because I dint know that question marks are used when you quote someone else work. The question marks are used to show that the work belongs to someone else and not my own writings. When quoting a source, it’s recommended to use the quote exactly the way it appears because no one would like to be misquoted. After learning this concept, I was now able to answer the question correctly in post-test quiz. Another challenging question was question was the 4th question. The question was testing on citation as a tool to avoid plagiarism. From the information given on citation, it’s highly recommended that any time you quote someone’s words whether printed, spoken or sung, it’s vital to cite them. Question 5 was still testing on citation and I dint answer it correctly. I got to learn that proverbs don’t need to be cited since they are common knowledge. Another question...

There are many styles which follow the author-date convention, including the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Chicago Manual of Style. This guide is based on an Australian style manual (AGPS style) now revised by Snooks & Co, 2002. Note: Before you create your list of references, check with your lecturer or tutor for the bibliographic style preferred by the School. One of the ways is that media has educated many on how to be more healthy and to have a better lifestyle. It has also made people more creative, making them realize what culture is all about. We as a society is shaped by the ever changing entertainment industry. Our lives are all about what the celebrities are doing, wearing, eating, or who they are doing. Entertainment media is everywhere. Entertainment media has many benefits and but has brought many challenges as well to American culture and has changed the way we interact with others. Throughout the many years of entertainment media, things have changed for the positive. I believe that with all of the changes, there has been mostly positive outcome from the media, but there has been some negative aspects as well. The television and radio helped to create our culture by having an impact on the way books, newspapers and magazines are designed and created. The television is one of the biggest influences on American families today. Children spend more time watching television and playing video games, therefore, spending less time interacting with others, which results in poor social and communication skills. Our family values and morals are changing with each passing day. With all of the sex, violence, and...

...What is Plagiarism? According to Black’s Law Dictionary plagiarism is “The act of appropriating the literary composition of another, or parts or passages of his writings, or the ideas or language of the same, and passing them off as the product of one’s own mind” (Black & Nolan, 1990, p. 1150). Stated another way, plagiarism is the pilfering of another’s hard work, while taking the credit for oneself. ‘The word ‘plagiarism’ comes from the Latin word plagiarius, which means ‘kidnapper.’ Writers commit plagiarism when they ‘kidnap’ someone else's work without acknowledging the source” (Hooker, 2006). First of all there are countless explanations for why a student may plagiarize, in some cases students are just plain lazy and don’t want to go through the creative process, exerting the meticulous hard work that good writing requires. There are students that suffer from poor time management skills failing to realize the amount of study and research required to deliver a genuine analysis. Likewise there are those that persist in poor note taking habits, leaving out important bits of information here and there causing confusion when it’s time to put it all together. Additionally there are students who are unaware of proper citation technique (What is Plagiarism?, n.d.). Meanwhile, plagiarism falls into one of two categories, one is intentional plagiarism, and the other is unintentional plagiarism. In the case of intentional plagiarism the writer or student knowingly uses the work...
