INSTRUCTIONS FOR MARKERS 1. 2. 3. This marking memorandum is intended as a guide for markers. It is by no means prescriptive, exhaustive or complete. The chief marker will discuss the memorandum with the markers before the commencement of marking at the marking centre. Candidates’ responses should be considered on merit. Whenever appropriate, marks should be awarded on a holistic basis.

4. 5.

Marking the comprehension:    Incorrect spelling in one-word answers should be marked wrong. Incorrect spelling and language errors in longer responses should not be penalised because the focus is on understanding. For open-ended questions, no marks should be awarded for YES/NO or I AGREE/I DISAGREE. The reason/ substantiation/motivation is what should be considered. For TRUE/FALSE or FACT/OPINION questions, the mark should be split, i.e. award 1 mark for TRUE/FALSE or FACT/OPINION and a mark for the reason/substantiation/ motivation/quotation. For questions which require quotations from the text, do not penalise candidates for omitting the quotation marks. When one-word answers are required and the candidate gives a whole sentence, mark correct provided that the correct word is underlined/highlighted. When two/three facts/points are required and a range is given, mark only the first two/three. If a candidate uses words from another language other than the one being examined, disregard those words, and if the answer still makes sense, do not penalise. However, if a word from another language is used in a text and required in an answer, this will be acceptable. Accept dialectal variations. For multiple-choice questions, accept BOTH the letter corresponding with the correct answer AND the answer written out in full.

SECTION A: COMPREHENSION QUESTION 1 TEXTS A, B and C TEXT A 1.1 He predicted that every move of all of the citizens would be monitored by those in authority.  cellphones – records are kept of all numbers that we have called and messages that we have sent  computers can be traced in cyberspace as they offer up details about their operating systems and capabilities  we give out personal information that can be traced  Internet usage causes ‘cookies’, which identify us, to be dropped onto the web (Any three.) B – keep a record of your preferences. The extent to which all citizens are monitored: from our physical movements being monitored by surveillance cameras to our cellphone and computer usage. (Allow for personal response. The answer must be substantiated from the text OR present possible negative responses). In South Africa there are many regulations to protect e-mail privacy. While in America, the NSA can monitor e-mails freely without alerting the writer or the recipient, and does not have to obtain a warrant to do so.   Be informed of the dangers lurking in seemingly innocent activities. Know that computer chips/cookies can be placed in many of our gadgets, and that they can be used to track our movements in cyberspace.  Never give out your personal details to unknown sources asking for them.  Use anti-virus software on our computers.  Beware of promises that seem too good to be true. (Any two. Accept any other relevant response.) Yes. It is appropriate as the article focuses on how our lives are monitored electronically (1) by people in power (1). The punctuation has been cleverly used. The author has added ‘digital’ into an otherwise familiar expression. This is appropriate for the content of the article. Credit candidates who see the allusion to Orwell’s novel. OR

TEXTS A AND B 1.11 Text A is more formal – does not use contractions. Although it uses direct speech, this is incorporated for purposes of accuracy of quoting. Text B is more colloquial – uses contractions. It is addressed to ‘guys’ and is concluded with ‘cheers’. The article refers to ‘you’ and ‘we’ – it feels like a conversation between friends. (Assess according to candidate’s response with appropriate illustration.) (2 + 2) TEXT C 1.12 1.13 Uninformed users accept all information on the internet as accurate and true. Learning has moved to the internet to such an extent that the learner in the cartoon firmly believes that the information he has taken off the web must be the truth – there can be no other. Amusement Park Promotion

...occasional visitors to season ticket holders? In order to convert occasional visitors into season ticket holders, I would implement a promotional program that would be difficult to turn down. First of all, the season pass would be advertised as a deal, even for occasional visitors, so that if they were to visit the park only three times, their season pass would save money – especially for locals. Second, there would be a small variety of season passes available for purchase, each with incentives. For example, one would be higher in price, but would give a pass holder free admission to a sister park and entitle visitor discounts at both parks. The lesser priced pass would offer smaller incentives such as discounts, but instead of free admission elsewhere, it would offer free parking, early admission into the park, and a limited “buddy pass.” The most basic pass would still be a great deal, but have fewer incentives. This way, customers not only save money on frequent visits to the park, but they get discounts and free incentives as a bonus. How would you inform people about your program? Nowadays, Facebook is such a wide and well-known social media platform that advertising through an “amusement park” page would be a successful marketing strategy for selling season passes. Since people are constantly “liking” and sharing things they come across on Facebook, the more people that scroll through their newsfeeds, the more people likely to learn about season pass deals. Rodgers vs. Cutler

...one of the end zones, is the Lambeau Leap. The Lambeau Leap was invented by Green Bay Packer Leroy Bulter in 1993. Butler forced a fumble and another Green Bay Packer, Reggie White, recovered the fumble and lateralled it back to Butler for a touchdown. Butler then jumped into the stands where the fans could finish cheering with him! When it comes to football, one of the main players of the game is the quarterback. The quarterback throws first downs, touchdowns, and even interceptions. Green Bay Packer had an outstanding quarterback for numerous years, Brett Favre. With Favre retiring, getting traded, retiring again, getting trading again, and then finally retiring once and for all, the Packers backup quarterback had to come into play. Who was that? Aaron Rodgers! Every team in the National Football League has rivals. One of the biggest Packer rival is the Chicago Bears. Jay Culter is the quarterback for “Da Bears.” Both the Packers and the Bears had an exceptional 2010 football season. The question lies ahead: Which team has the star-smashing quarterback? Rodgers and Culter may be friends off-the-field, but when it comes to performances on the field, Rodger is statistically the outstanding quarterback. Aaron Rodgers grew up in Chico, California. Rodgers started his college career at Butte Community College in 2002. He transferred to the University of California in 2003 where he was the starting quarterback. In 2003, Rodgers received the Insight Bowl Offensive...

Dallas Cowboys Pass Rush Case Study

...Dallas Cowboys needs some serious defensive help in 2016 The Cowboys had a pass rush problem in 2015. They also had the same problem in 2014, but the powers-that-be decided to try and fix that problem by bringing in Greg Hardy to try and bring some attitude to that defensive line. Jeremy Mincey came in 2014 from Denver and brought six sacks the same year, but laid a big ol’ goose egg in the sacks column for 2015. Terrell McClain came to the Cowboys the same year but missed a few games with an ankle injury and a concussion. To say that he’s been much of a mystery for that pass rush problem is pretty par for the course. With the 81st pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, Dallas brought Tyrone Crawford into the mix but in those four years, he’s only totaled eight sacks to help the consistent sack problem for the Cowboys. Nick Hayden...

Personal Narrative: A Career In Skiing

...Never give up on anything, even if it seems impossible at first. After I got over my self-doubts about my skiing skills, I improved tremendously. Now, I like to spend my weekends skiing with my family and friends on Silver Star Ski Mountain, I go up skiing almost every weekend during the winter season. However, it didn’t start out that way. The first year I went skiing was the winter of my grade seven year when my dad bought a Seasons Pass for himself, my brother, and for me. Kaiden, my brother, and I went skiing at Silver Star a couple of times before my dad bought us the passes, except we were quite young. It was a big stretch for him to get these passes, luckily he hit the jackpot; we used them more than enough times in the end. The first day we used our passes was a chilly day on the mountain with a snow base of 139cm and a couple centimeters of fresh powder on top. It was a beautiful day, even though it was a bit cold; the sun peaked through the clouds enough to make the snow glisten. Unfortunately, for the first couple of weeks we didn’t get to really enjoy gorgeous days like our first....

Heroic Traits Of Odysseus In The Odyssey

...Odysseus shows authority when he and his men were on the island of the Lotus eaters and his men ate the Lotus. He “[drives] them all three wailing, to the ships, [ties] them down under the rowing benches, [calls] the rest: All aboard; come, clear the beach and no one taste the Lotus, or you lose your hope of home” (898). This shows Odysseus’ mentorship because he leads all the men back to the ship and steers them out of harm’s way. Another example of Odysseus’ leadership is when the men pass through the sirens, and Odysseus, “carved a massive cake of beeswax into bits and then rolled them in my hands until they soften” (933). He put the wax in his men’s ears and they cruised past the sirens quickly and unharmed. Odysseus shows leadership because he presents to his men a way to stay safe and the men follow his instructions. Also, I have the trait of leadership. For example, this fall I was the quarterback of the football team, and I needed to lead the team, call the plays in the huddle, and touch the ball every play. Throughout the season I worked hard on being a good quarterback and led my team to a good season. Also, I demonstrated my guidance by joining the middle school student council. I stepped out of my comfort zone to join the council that leads the student body; I used the ideas I constructed and helped to lead the...

Fundamentals of Quarterback in the Nfl

...in the national football league is different. During this essay, I will be discussing the following feats that every quarterback in the national football league should possess in order to succeed: Passing the football, athleticism displayed on the field, and the affect that home and away games affect the players performance. The Risk/Rewards of Passing the Football One of the most rewarding awards that someone can bring to a football game is completing a long pass to gain a lot of yards for their team. As a quarterback, in order to accomplish those long throws the quarterback needs accuracy and arm strength. Mackie Shilstone stated “Next to former Denver Bronco QB John Elway and the Patriots' Tom Brady, Brees throws the "comeback" as good as (with more power and accuracy) anyone I've seen in recent times - the operative word being accuracy.” What this statement implies is that Drew Brees is known for completing long passes during football games. Now Cam Newton on the other hand has been struggling with his long pass completion percentage. According to rotoworld.com on October 30 “The passing performance was one of the worst of Newton's career, as he simply wasn't accurate, either lofting passes too high, or throwing them too hard. "Touch" was not in Newton's vocabulary this evening, though that's often the case. He was also hurt by drops”. By reading this, any NFL fanatic can comprehend that...

Cummings illustrates the cycle of life to show the reader the passage of time. The passage of time is made evident by the repetition and syntax of “spring summer autumn winter” and illusions to other seasons throughout the poem (Cummings, line 3). The first stanza shows the seasons in order starting on the first full season of the year “spring” followed by “summer autumn winter” (Cummings, 3). The line of seasons become “an ‘incremental’ refrain, because it is slightly changed each time it appears” (Turco). Cheating Scandal: Should Football Be Paid?

...In 1994, the Naval Academy had 125 midshipmen that were caught cheating on an engineering exam. Someone got a copy of the exam and sent it to everyone so that they could pass the exam. During all this the football team lost about 20 players that year. “The cheating scandal is the latest blow to the Academy, which suffered a sexual harassment scandal in 1990 after eight male midshipmen chained a female classmate to a urinal. Comparing Oregon to Michigan

...life time but when it comes to comparing states, I would have to go with Oregon and Michigan. I found that the differences with these two states would have to be these three things. First would have to be the seasons, then the landscape, and finally it would be the people. Oregon tends to have only two seasons. They are summer and winter, or as the locals say wet and dry. In the summer time it gets into the 90’s, yet at night it gets down into the 50’s, which makes for some nice sleeping weather. The summers are a very dry time of year in Oregon. There are no big thunderstorms, no lightening, and very little, if no rain at all. This type of climate makes it hard to grow certain types of crops. Do to the lack of rain and the cool temperatures at night. The one crop that grows best is grass. The Willamette Valley, namely Linn and Benton counties, is the world’s largest producers of cool- weather grasses. Now we come to the winter season. Ah yes, better known as the rainy season, during which it rains for eight months. Because of the amount of rain that falls, grass and fescue, grows very well in this region. The only problem with winter, other than the rain, is that the sun does not come out very often. With the lack of sun shine and over cast skies comes a feeling of depression. Oregon has one of the highest suicide rates in the winter as compared to other states. It is a very depressing time of year. Michigan has four seasons. They are winter; spring...

Sports Ethics

...Todd Gillispie Prof. MacAdams 8/23/10 Sports Ethics: How Technology Alters the Balance of Fairness Over the years sports have made great strides in improving fairness so as to create a more competitive form of entertainment. In the early years before the advancements in technology and development of enhancement drugs, it was talent that set athletes apart from one another. But as the number of athletes rose and the revenue generated by sports, as well as the salaries of players, escalated exponentially, so did the need to excell. Accordingly, athletes looked for anything that would give them an edge. Sports enhancers were used to obtain a competitive advantage, thus disrupting the concept of fairness. The problem of fairness did not only lie in the use of enhancers, but also with play calling. In most sports you have an official or team of officials who are solely responsible for ensuring all calls are made correctly. Because of “human error”, as well as the possibility of biased officiating, the idea evolved of using camera systems whose sole duty is to record all plays that can be replayed to ensure that calls were correctly made. In this paper I will analyze two forms of technology – one from a pure technology perspective and one from a medical perspective - that have both positive and negative aspects in tipping the scale of fairness. For most sports, the sole purpose of a video replay system is to determine the correctness of close calls or...

Scaling Challenges

...Scaling Challenge #1: Passing the Hat AS a start-up, executives need to be prepared to wear more than one functional hat to be successful. As you scale, however, you must carefully oversee the process of passing those hats to new executives and managers that join the team. This looks easy on paper (just draw up the new org chart), but it can prove extremely challenging in practice. While it is easy to pass the hat in form, it may not be easy to pass the hat in substance when the on-boarding of the new hat owner is arduous, i.e., big learning curve, lots of important internal relationships, and so forth. As long as the old hat-owner offers greater knowledge and effectiveness in the relevant functional area, everyone in the organization will gravitate to her for decisions and support, regardless of what the new org chart says. The problem can be further exacerbated if the old hat owner isn’t all that willing to pass the hat in the first place or if the old hat owner is too willing and runs away from the responsibility faster than the new executive can get up to speed. Poor hat passing can result in confusion, frustration, conflict, executive turnover and ultimately poor business performance. Hat passing is tricky business that requires the buy-in all of all those affected, a solid foundation of respect between the two hat-passers, and a thoughtful approach to managing the transition. Without these fundamentals in place as you are scaling, you may find that you are dropping more...
