Leadership Commentary

Introduction
Leadership is an important quality in all nurses. It is relevant to all levels of nursing and increases the quality of care we are able to give to our patients (James P. Smith, 2006). Leadership in nursing is not necessarily about being in charge but more about being able to make confident and competent decisions and influence the behaviour of others to ensure the best patient care is delivered. Throughout a community placement I endeavoured to improve my leadership skills and made use of an action plan to do this. I will make use of Gibbs (1988) reflective cycle to evaluate and reflect on this process. Gibbs is a simple and effective method of reflection and will allow a focus on the event and give a clear structure to the commentary and will also allow an action plan to be formulated to ensure the process is ongoing.
Description
During a placement with the district nursing team I identified leadership skills which I felt I needed to improve, which were achievable and relevant to nursing practice. I also took into consideration the leadership qualities framework from the NHS institute of innovation and improvement ( NHS institute for innovation and improvement,2005) this highlights a number a important aspects of leadership such as empowering others, collaborating with others and leading change through people. I felt that these were important and the skills which I would develop should be based around these concepts. The skills that were chosen were, coaching, identifying learning needs of colleagues and communication within the multi disciplinary team. I felt that these skills were relevant to nursing practice due to the commitment to lifelong learning which nurses make (NMC,2008) leadership in nursing should have a positive effect on the care given and in discussion with my mentor I concluded that these skills

Critically Analyse the Effectiveness of Leadership in the Nhs

...HS 3001 LEADERSHIP AND CHANGE Critically analyse the effectiveness of leadership in the NHS Summary This essay will discuss and critically analyse the effectiveness of leadership role of senior nurses in the NHS. The essay will examine the definition of leadership, different theories of leaderships and how it can be implicated to nursing practice including changes that should be made to make nursing leaders more effective in NHS health care settings. Leadership is an important topic that is highly looked at in NHS. Policy makers approves that nurses have a leadership responsibility in clinical and managerial aspects of things in health care settings. Introduction There are so many different definition of leadership. According to Alimo-metcalfe and Lawler (2001) which stated ‘there is no single, robust definition of leadership available within UK organisations today’. Also according to Huber (2006) ‘leader use their power to bring teams together, spark innovation, create positive communication and drive forward toward group goals’ However, the most common definition that is used is by Northouse (2004), This defined leadership as ‘a process whereby an individual influences a group of individual to achieve a common goal’. This definition confines the fundamental nature of leadership but at the same time it has acknowledged that due to wild ranges of leadership perspective, there will be many definitions of what leadership means depending on the importance of personal...

Leadership

...critically examines leadership style and change management strategy in relation to a particular change in clinical practice. The change made in practice was a move from open access at well baby clinic to an appointment system. The effectiveness of the leader will be demonstrated by focusing on the change process, applying leadership theory to the change and its implementation in practice. This essay also identifies implications for practice and developmental needs for the author, the team and the sphere of practice. It begins by outlining policy drivers relating to leadership within the NHS generally and health visiting specifically. It is interesting to note that despite the vast literature on leadership there is very little agreement amongst scholars on the definition of the term (Willcocks 2012; Alimo-Metcalfe and Lawler 2001). Contemporary government policies such as the Health Visitor Implementation plan (GBDH 2011) focus on the desirability of strong leadership to improve the quality of care but are equally vague on defining leadership (Willcocks 2012; Martin and Learmonth 2012). Some authors have found that the term “leader” has merely superseded the terms “administrator” and “manager” within the confines of the NHS (Martin and Learmonth 2012; Sheridan, Rastan and Foulkes 2008; Hodgetts 2012) as it confers an image of “heroism” and, as yet, carries none of the negative connotations associated with administration or management. It has been suggested that leadership may be seen...

A Look at the Uk Nhs

...The head of the United Kingdom's National Health Service (NHS), Sir David Nicholson, has refused to accept responsibility for the needless deaths that occur daily at NHS hospitals by claiming that these deaths are not a result of mismanagement but instead are due to inherent "systemic" failings. A Look at the UK’s NHS—A Cautionary Tale by Al Kaltman A single payer health care system was the original goal of President Obama, and from his perspective while the Affordable Care Act was a step in the right direction, it fell short of what was needed. Should the Democrats regain control of the House in 2014, the President is likely to get the single payer system he desires. But some among his followers, and perhaps even the President himself, want to go even further and create a US National Health Service (NHS). In view of this, it is worth taking a look at the current state of the United Kingdom’s NHS. The final report of the inquiry into the UK’s Stafford Hospital scandal was published on February 6 and contained 290 recommendations for improvement in hospital operations and staff training. It is generally accepted that between the years 2005 and 2008 as many as 1,200 persons died needlessly at the hospital, and that these deaths were due to shocking lapses in patient care. The horror stories do not need repeating, but what is clear is that the NHS Trust that oversaw the hospital focused on reducing expenses and not on patient care. Prime Minister Cameron has...

Is It Important to Focus on Organisational Values and Engaging Stakeholders, Including Patients, When Working to Improve Care Quality and Patient Experience?

...analysis will discuss the relationship between organisational values, stakeholder engagement and the delivery of quality patient care, before relating this to his professional practice, prior to drawing and presenting conclusions. The author having worked in the NHS for a number of years as a Commissioning Manager in a non-clinical role has often found it difficult to see the impact that sound organisational values and robust stakeholder engagement can directly have on the delivery of patient quality, experience and care, working through Module 3 has been a truly eye opening experience for the author. Having completed Module 1 and 2 of the EGA course and now coming to the end of Module 3, there have been many opportunities for self-reflection and time to make sense of how and why organisational values, engagement and service delivery are all interlinked. Analysis Engaging Stakeholders to Improve Care & Quality “Stakeholder engagement is the process by which an organisation involves people who may be affected by the decisions it makes or can influence the implementation of its decisions.” The notion of engagement with patients in their care has been a growing focus of health and social care policy. In 2000 the NHS published their plan (Department of Health 2000) which spoke of moulding services around the needs and desires where possible of patients themselves. Seven years on,...

Organizational Systems and Leadership Task 3

...Organizational Systems and Quality Leadership Task 3 Organizational Systems and Quality Leadership Task 3 Bronagh Paladino Western Governors University 1 Organizational Systems and Quality Leadership Task 3 A1. The country that I pick to compare to the U.S. healthcare system is Great Britain. According to the PBS Frontline program, “Sick Around The World”, by T.R. Reid, Great Britain uses a government run National Health Service (NHS), which seems too close to socialism for most Americans. For about half of what the U.S. pays per person for healthcare, the NHS covers all U.K. citizens and has better health statistics. (Palfreman, Reid, 2008). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the total expenditure on health per capita is $3,311 in the U.K., whereas in the U.S., the total expenditure on health per capita is $9,146. (WHO, n.d.). In the U.K. the NHS’s proposition is that the citizens never have to pay a medical bill, no insurance premium and no co-pay. The British pay for their healthcare out of tax revenue as the government owns the hospitals and the doctors are salary government employees. The British pay much higher taxes than the Americans to cover their healthcare. (Palfreman, Reid, 2008). The U.S. healthcare system is based on a regulated market system as it is regulated by state or federal legislation. The U.S. healthcare is paid for by a combination of public and private sources by third-party private or public insurers and out-of-pocket...

This because having character means that I’d have the ability to show respect and empathy, which in turn will help me foster positive working relationships. Furthermore, it is especially important in a team because you need to collaborate in order to get the job done, and when you can’t respect a co-worker, you’ll create more problems than end...

...The Final Report of the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust Public Inquiry – Chaired by Robert Francis QC On the day briefing by the Foundation Trust Network (FTN) 1. Background The following briefing provides a summary of our action to date, the Francis recommendations and an initial response from the FTN. 2. Initial Reaction from the FTN In the run up to publication of the Francis Report, our Chair, Peter Griffiths and Chief Executive, Chris Hopson wrote an open letter to members acknowledging that pockets of poor quality care can exist in all types of trust, but emphasising that failures as serious, protracted and devastating as Mid Staffordshire are rare and isolated. We recognised that the FTN and the wider NHS need to do much more to identify and share best practice on improving quality of care and to provide practical tools to support trusts in doing so. Our work programme will identify how the FTN can help develop sector led support to complement government led initiatives, focussing on: • • • • The drivers of quality identified through research such as culture, ward level leadership, team effectiveness, staff satisfaction and support; The role of the board; Defining what support could be provided to trusts finding it difficult to meet standards; Exploring the link between increasing financial pressure and quality. Clearly, today’s announcements and recommendations will have a major impact on everyone in the NHS. We are committed to engaging fully in the evolving...

Diversity: Business Case vs Moral Case

...Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to examine the business case for ethnic diversity in the British National Health Service (NHS). It seeks to contextualise issues around diversity within the current political environment, and identify the barriers to diversity in the NHS. The business case has been very strongly argued as justification for introducing both managing diversity and equal opportunity initiatives - here the paper examines the inconsistencies of using that argument, and maintains that the only justification worth presenting is that based on (deontological) moral arguments. Design/methodology/approach - The paper is conceptual in nature exploring the respective cases for diversity using a broad range of the available literature brought together as part of a rapid evidence assessment. It does so in order to make some far-reaching claims about the future justifications for active diversification of senior management in key public sector institutions. Findings - The distinctions between the business and moral cases are false, in that both have ethical reference points. However, the business case is not only difficult to translate to public sector institutions; there are also evidential problems with its adoption. In light of this the conclusion here is that the moral (deontological) case is the only one that has any long term value for proponents of diversity. Originality/value - The value of this paper is that it examines the confusion that surrounds different cases...
