...Contrast essay by Louise Hensley I love both my pets! Sosha which is a red-nosed Pit-bull, and then there is Lilbit and she is a German Shepard. These two breeds of animals have their own special unique qualities of their own. As for the Pit-bull breed they are known for their intelligence, strength, and loyalty. They have also been marked for centuries now for their violence and aggressiveness towards people and other animals. They get their name from the Molossian family of dogs, which bear the name from the Molossi Tribe, which is a group of people who lived in Ancient Greece, and they favored the use of robust, muscular dogs in warfare. They are reknowned for their fierceness, and for the ability to intimidate the enemies of the tribe. The Greece later began to sell these dogs to Rome which they used to cross breed with their counterparts from the year 50 A.D to 410 A.D. and then was used for entertainment in the arenas and coliseums of Rome. Once in Rome the British dogs were sold to the Englishman, when they left to go back home the Englishmen took their dogs with them and this is how they ended up in the United States. Even though Sosha is a Pit-bull, she is nothing like they say, she is very well trained and mild mannered. Lilbit is a German Shepard and their breed is known for their largeness, intelligence, strength, and their ability in training. They were used to work in the fields for sheep herding. Also, because of their intelligence and obedience training they...

...the African Wild Dog. They populate various spots of southeastern Africa. The human settlements in developing countries there tend to be heavily dependent on agriculture. This is a problem. The African Wild Dog sees the livestock in these settlements as easy prey, which is an opportunity they act upon. Humans don?t like it when other animals eat their food, so, BANG! They shoot them. Or kill them in some other fashion. However, the same livestock initially came from the wild, where the dogs hunted. As a result, the African Wild Dog is running out of prey to eat, and what remains is being warded off. As they grow desperate for food, they are liable to eat anything they think could be edible, things they normally would choose not to eat. With viral diseases being a prevalent natural threat in the area, the dogs are far more prone to infection as they weaken and attempt to push their boundaries, or reclaim the ones we took. This has all reduced the African Wild Dog population to a range between 3,000 and 5,000, though it is difficult to be precise. The World Wildlife Fund has been working to control the situation and help the dogs survive in an ample habitat. They have attempted to reduce the amount of hunting done in particular areas that the African Wild Dog roams, as well as come up with more efficient, non-lethal methods to keep the dogs away from human settlements. The situation isn?t in dire straits just yet, but they?re still on the endangered list, so let?s hope that this...

...In the essay “The Deer at Providencia,” Annie Dillard illustrates her confusion and awareness of suffering that occurs around her in the world. Dillard begins the essay with explaining her trip to Ecuador, she and three other North Americans went on this trip. (MS 7) On this trip, Dillard realizes the suffering through a deer; thus, the meat of an animal begins to get tenderer the more you let it suffer. (MS 4) The village people tied up the deer so it gets tenderer, but in doing this they make it suffer. Dillard also experiences suffering through a burnt man. (MS 3) Throughout the essay, Dillard uses imagery, tone, and parallelism to describe her awareness and confusion about suffering. (MS 2) Dillard portrays excellent imagery in the narrative...

...do we let fears control our lives? I never thought I would ever get over my own fears. These fears made my childhood very difficult and hard to deal with. However for me as a young child, I was afraid of dogs, falling, and the darkness. Being afraid of dogs was one of my biggest fears. One day I was walking down the street from school and I felt like I had walked upon one of the biggest dogs I had ever seen. The dog stood behind a gate taller than I. It looked at me standing there nerves and shaking. As I look at his sharp teeth and him foaming at the mouth as if I was a full course meal. As he started to bark I felt something warm run down my leg. Every time a dog would bark at me I get scared. Another big fear of mine was a fear of leaves. There are a lot of things out there to be afraid of, and there seem to be phobia about falling of the of the roof or a bridge. As I got older, my parents told me to look down whenever I was surrounded by leaves and jump up and down and crash them all. And it would be just like killing them. It took me a long time to get over my fear but it worked. I am also afraid of the dark. I could not sleep in my room without leaving the light on. When I went to sleep in the dark, I started to imagine things like monsters and other things that would scare me. To me a monster was something that would eat you alive and not care. I was afraid that it would write my parents a note with my blood on the wall, and tell them that...

...Running head: Vietnamese and English idioms related to the word “Dog”: Vietnamese and English idioms related to the word “Dog”: A contrastive Analysis Student: Nguyen Le Hoang Yen Class: 4A08 Ho Chi Minh City University of Pedagogy Contrastive Analysis Instructor: Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu December 31, 2011 Abstract One problem which makes a lot of people have difficulty in communicating with one another is to use idiomatic expressions. As far as you know, idiomatic expressions make English become colorful and full of vitality, so they are often used very much in the native speakers’ speech and in the writing such as news, songs, movies, etc. on the television. However, these idioms are sometimes are not easy to understand and study their meanings, so I decide to study them by studying Vietnamese and English idioms containing the word ‘dog’ and one another reason for this topic to study is that I really like lovely dogs. In my studying this topic, there are two parts such as theoretical background and Vietnamese and English idioms related to the word ‘dog’ which is the main part of my topic. Theoretical background Idioms versus proverbs Idioms and proverbs are frequently used in the daily speech, so we can not find the differences between them clearly. However, we can distinguish idioms and proverbs by basing on some criteria. Idioms * It is a fixed group of words. e.g. the idiom ‘chó chui gầm chạn’ has the same meaning of the word ‘hèn hạ’ (disgraced)....

...Nicholas Campbell 9/24/12 Essay 1 English 101 One of the biggest, and most emphasized themes in “We3” is that of human qualities existing in non-human characters. We see three animals that have been altered with by the government and turned into killing machines. However we see many things that indicate that despite their human capabilities, they still show many qualities of regular animals of their respective species. One of the clearest examples of this is in the second chapter on the twenty-ninth page. Here we see 1 after he and 2 attacked, and ultimately killed a human and his dog. They attacked after the man shot 3, and the dog tried to protect his owner. 1 went immediately for the human while 2 took care of the attacking dog. In these panels, we see 1 practically beating himself up for what he did. He is sitting there with his eyes closed and his head down, which is typically pretty clear body language for somebody that is sad or upset about something. This goes along with the theme I mentioned earlier because people don’t usually think of animals as having the capability to be upset about their actions. Remorse is ordinarily thought of as being a quality that us humans have, but one that animals would not possess. In the panel 1 continues to repeat “Bad dog, bad dog, bad dog” which shows that he is disappointed in his own actions and that it is bothering him that he had to do what he did to the man. It is the only thing that is on his mind, even when...

...In this essay I’m going to be talking about the death of Candy’s dog was right or wrong. The death of Candy’s caused a major controversy between the readers and some of the characters in the book. In my opinion I strongly believe that the death of Candy’s dog was right, due to the fact that the dog is ‘no good’ to the farm and even to candy as Carlson stated. Evidence to support this is that Carlson said ‘the ol’ dog jus’ suffers hiself all the time’. This connotes that the dog is old, exhausted and in pain,(which means it suffering) so it would be only be in the dogs best interest by putting it out its misery as it would eventually die soon. If I had a pet and it was elderly and diseased, I would have it put to sleep because I’m only doing it in my dog’s best interest. However, many readers could argue that it was wrong to kill candy’s dog as it was candy’s dog, so candy should make the decision of killing his dog. Even though candy was being reluctant to killing his dog, the final decision was his and no one to make it for him. For instance, after the dog was shot candy told George that he "ought to have shot that dog myself”. This implies that, after the dog was shot candy realised that he shouldn’t have let a stranger like Carlson kill his dog that he has been with for a long time, because he has “had him since he was a pup”. Also, It foreshadowed the end of the story, which was that George would shoot Lennie instead of letting a "stranger" (the other ranch hands, namely...

...Engelsk – Essay Task A The text Eating Sugar is a shortstory written by Catherine Merriman. The story takes place in a forest in Thailand during the Song Khran, which is the Thai New Year holiday and it takes place in April. The story is about an English family of three: Alex, the father, Eileen, the mother and Suzanne, the daughter. Alex and his wife Eileen had travelled to Thailand to visit their daughter Suzanne, who is an English teacher. They went inside a forest to look for a market, but the market was no longer there when they got there, so they decided to go back, but instead they got lost. Alex and Eileen were both afraid, especially when four Thai men showed up in the forest, but their daughter Suzanne were just calm and mature. She took care of her parents and talked to the natives they met in the forest, trying to get her and her parents a ride back to the city. There is definitely something about role reversal here, which Catherine Merriman also says. “There had been a role reversal here. Suzanne, their brace twenty-one-year old daughter transformed [...] to a competent, patient encouraging parent. He (red. Alex) and Eileen her anxious, fractious dependent charges.”[1] Alex is the only man in the family (at least that we know of). When a man is alone with his wife and daughter, of course he feels like he needs to protect them from every possible danger. That is also why Alex wants to seem tough on the outside, not showing that he is afraid, even though he...

...her distinguished teaching career. Her books include Philosophy in a New Key: A Study of the Symbolism of Reason, Rite, and Art (1942), Feeling and Form (1953), and Mind: An Essay in Human Feeling (1967). In the following essay, which originally appeared in Ms. Magazine, Langer explores how language separates humans from the rest of the animal kingdom. She contends that the use of symbols – in addition to the use of signs that animals also use – frees humans not only to react to their environment but also to think about it. Moreover, symbols allow us to create imagery and ideas not directly related to the real world, so that we can plan, imagine, and communicate abstractions – to do, in essence, the things that make us human. 1 gesticulate the point. He would make his wishes known, give warnings, perhaps develop a social system like that of bees and ants, with such a wonderful efficiency of communal enterprise that all men would have plenty to eat, warm apartments – all exactly alike and perfectly convenient – to live in, and everybody could and would sit in the sun or by the fire, as the climate demanded, not talking but just basking, with every want satisfied, most of his life. The young would romp and make love, the old would sleep, the middle-aged would do the routine work almost unconsciously and eat a great deal. But that would be the life of a social, superintelligent, purely sign-using animal. 5 To us who are...

...telling us to get out of bed to get ready for work or to go to class. On the other hand, personal responsibility is the acceptance of failure to accomplish the task that we are obligated to. As a college level student, we know that part of our responsibility is to read assigned materials, complete task on time and take part in classroom discussions at the very least. Failure to complete these tasks ultimately could result in dismissal from a chosen program and a delay educational goals. One strategy for overcoming the pressures of student life is time/self-management. At the college level the student is held accountable for his or her education. This means no excuses. It does not matter that the dog “ate your homework”. Had you made time to feed the dog he may not have chosen to eat the homework instead. Time management does not mean to give all your energy and focus to only working on school assignments. It simply means to designate time for completing these tasks. Creating a to-do list whether it be on notebook paper, post-it notes, or using my personal favorite, apps on cell phones are great ways to keep account of what needs to be completed and allows you to organize and prioritize your task. “We tend to give top priority to what we enjoy studying, yet the courses that we find most difficult often require the most creative energy” (Ellis, 2011)....

...what life was like in the year 2013/2014 for me. My daily routines would start like this: I would wake up at 7am to start my routines. This includes cleaning my house, taking my two dogs outside, eating and doing my school work. While doing my school work I would listen to love songs from the 80’s to relax and concentrate (Perry, 2014). At present, I am enrolled into Kaplan University online pursuing my Bachelors in Psychology. During my day, I have to read my books and post to the discussion boards and comment to two classmates’ posts with minimum 250 words. I also have to attend one seminar a week for one hour online with my classmates and the Professor. During the ten week course we have three essays due, so I am constantly working on them early. Once my school work is over, however, I spend my time surfing the internet such as, Facebook, Yahoo mail, and playing games online. On the weekends I am more active with working out and walking, and spending time with my family. I believe to have a positive balance in my life is by staying in shape (Perry, 2014). In 2013/2014, in our society we judge people by the way they look, I have heard people say if you are fat that means you are poor. When I asked what they meant they stated the reason people are fat is because they are lazy and they eat cheap food that is filled with fat. They also stated they are fat because they do not care for their body. People also think that if you are thin, you will be liked and respected, if...
