Introduction
This report will be about Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) rights in the US. More specifically it will give an answer to the main research question which is ‘What differences are there in the acceptance of LGBT rights, concerning same-sex marriage, throughout the US?’. The answer will be found with the use of the following sub-questions:
- What are LGBT rights?(through a literature research)
- What difficulties do LGBT people face in everyday life (related to LGBT rights)?(through a literature/statistical research)

1979: About 75,000 people participated in the National March on Washington for LGBT Rights in Washington, D.C..
1982: Wisconsin becomes the first state to construct a law against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
1993: The “Don't Ask, Don't Tell” policy is created for the U.S. military, permitting gays to serve in the military but disallowing homosexual activity.
About 800,000 people join the March on Washington for LGBT Rights and Liberation. The march is a response to “Don't Ask Don't Tell” but also to the increasing hate crimes and discrimination against LGBT people.
2000: Vermont becomes the first state to legally recognize marriage for same-sex couples
2004: Same-sex marriage becomes legal in Massachusetts.
2005: Same-sex marriage becomes legal in Connecticut.
2006: Same-sex marriage becomes legal in New Jersey.
2007: The House of Representatives introduces equal rights in labour for LGBT people.
2008: Connecticut legalizes same-sex marriage.
Same-sex couples are allowed to legally marry in California
2009: The Iowa Supreme Court rejects the state law to ban same-sex marriage.
